    Systematic study of heavy cluster emission from {210-226}^Ra isotopes

    The half lives for various clusters lying in the cold reaction valleys of {210-226}^Ra isotopes are computed using our Coulomb and proximity potential model (CPPM). The computed half lives of 4^He and 14^C clusters from {210-226}^Ra isotopes are in good agreement with experimental data. Half lives are also computed using the Universal formula for cluster decay (UNIV) of Poenaru et al., and are found to be in agreement with CPPM values. Our study reveals the role of doubly magic 208^Pb daughter in cluster decay process. Geiger - Nuttall plots for all clusters up to 62^Fe are studied and are found to be linear with different slopes and intercepts. {12,14}^C emission from 220^Ra; 14^C emission from {222,224}^Ra; 14^C and 20^O emission from 226^Ra are found to be most favourable for measurement and this observation will serve as a guide to the future experiments.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures; Nuclear Physics A (2012

    Study of thyroid function in patients admitted in intensive care unit

    Background: The thyroid gland produces two related hormones, tetraiodothyronine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) play a critical role in cell differentiation during development and maintain thermogenic and metabolic homeostasis in the adult. Critically ill patients have been defined as those that by dysfunction or failure of one or more organ system depend on survival from advanced instruments monitoring and therapy. The objective was to study the thyroid dysfunction in critically ill patients admitted in intensive care units and its relation to the mortality and severity of disease.Methods: This is a cross sectional study carried out in Dr. Pinnamaneni Siddhartha institute of medical sciences and research foundation, Chinoutpalli, Andhra Pradesh from 1st January 2022 to 30th September 2022 involving 100 patients. Patients of age above 18 years, both sexes, admitted to intensive care units with critical illness were analyzed and approved by institutional ethics committee of Dr. PSIMS and RF data were entered in MS-excel and analyzed in SPSS V22 software. Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U test, logistic regression, ROC curves were applied. P values were reported for all statistical tests and a value of<0.05 was considered to be significant.Results: Out of 100 critically ill patients out of which 17 patients had sepsis, 18 had acute renal failure, 19 patients had acute respiratory failure, 19 patients had diabetic ketoacidosis, 16 patients had congestive cardiac failure, and 11 patients had stroke and their correlation with t3 hormone decrement showed positive correlation.Conclusions: Thyroid profile can be used in predicting the mortality in ICU patients

    Father of Surgery, Acharya Sushruta had complete knowledge of Vrana (wound) and their management along with its untimely and untreated complication. The Vrana Shopha is described as earlier phase of Vrana. Sushruta has mentioned in detail about Vrana Shopha. Vrana Shopha has 3 progressive stages. These are Amawastha (just early stage of inflammatory process), Pachyamanawastha (true inflammatory stage) and Pakwawastha (suppurative stage) respectively. Based on the vitiation of Dosha, Sushruta has described Vrana Shopha into 6 types: Vatika, Paittika, Kaphaja, Shonita, Sannipattaja and Agantuja. Acharya has differentiated them based on their Laxanas, such as colour, pain etc. Shatkriyakala was explained for the first time in this context by Sushruta. Sixty procedures for management of Vrana Shopha and Vrana was told by Sushruta. Out of these Apatarpana to Virechana were mentioned for Vrana Shopha and rest for Vrana. Knowledge about Vrana Shopha can prevent from further damage to the body

    Primary oral malignant melanoma - A case report

    Melanoma arising from mucosal surfaces of the head and neck is a very rare neoplasm and it is considered among the most deadly of all human neoplasms. Although skin melanomas comprise 1.3% of all cancers, oral malignant melanoma accounts for only 0.2 to 8% of all reported melanomas, common sites of occurrence being palate and maxillary gingiva. Due to its presence at relatively obscure areas in the oral cavity, most oral malignant melanomas are diagnosed at a late stage and are associated with poor prognosis. Early diagnosis is essential for successful treatment and perhaps the key factor in improving the prognosis of oral malignant melanoma. This paper reports a case of a 42year old woman with primary malignant melanoma at a rare site, the left retromolar region involving the left side of the mandible, up to level IV ipsilateral cervical lymph nodes. The patient was treated with left hemimandibulectomy with radical neck dissection and was followed up for two years and 3months without any local recurrence or distant metastasis. It is suggested that any pigmented lesion that are suspected of undergoing changes in their clinical appearance should be biopsied
