Probing the spin-parity of the Higgs boson via jet kinematics in vector boson fusion
Determining the spin and the parity quantum numbers of the recently
discovered Higgs-like boson at the LHC is a matter of great importance. In this
paper, we consider the possibility of using the kinematics of the tagging jets
in Higgs production via the vector boson fusion (VBF) process to test the
tensor structure of the Higgs-vector boson () interaction and to determine
the spin and CP properties of the observed resonance. We show that an anomalous
vertex, in particular its explicit momentum dependence, drastically
affects the rapidity between the two scattered quarks and their transverse
momenta and, hence, the acceptance of the kinematical cuts that allow to select
the VBF topology. The sensitivity of these observables to different spin-parity
assignments, including the dependence on the LHC center of mass energy, are
evaluated. In addition, we show that in associated Higgs production with a
vector boson some kinematical variables, such as the invariant mass of the
system and the transverse momenta of the two bosons and their separation in
rapidity, are also sensitive to the spin--parity assignments of the Higgs--like
boson.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
A Method to Estimate the Boson Mass and to Optimise Sensitivity to Helicity Correlations of tau+tau- Final States
In proton-proton collisions at LHC energies, Z and low mass Higgs bosons
would be produced with high and predominantly longitudinal boost with respect
to the beam axis. This note describes a new analysis tool devised to handle
this situation in cases when such bosons decay to a pair of tau-leptons. The
tool reconstructs the rest frame of the tau+tau- pair by finding the boost that
minimises the acollinearity between the visible tau decay products. In most
cases this gives a reasonable approximation to the rest frame of the decaying
boson. It is shown how the reconstructed rest frame allows for a new method of
mass estimation. Also a considerable gain in sensitivity to helicity
correlations is obtained by analysing the tau-jets in the reconstructed frame
instead of using the laboratory momenta and energies, particularly when both
tau-leptons decay hadronically.Comment: 13 pages, method extended with 3D boost finde
Prospects for the Search for a Standard Model Higgs Boson in ATLAS using Vector Boson Fusion
The potential for the discovery of a Standard Model Higgs boson in the mass
range m_H < 2 m_Z in the vector boson fusion mode has been studied for the
ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The characteristic signatures of additional jets
in the forward regions of the detector and of low jet activity in the central
region allow for an efficient background rejection. Analyses for the H -> WW
and H -> tau tau decay modes have been performed using a realistic simulation
of the expected detector performance. The results obtained demonstrate the
large discovery potential in the H -> WW decay channel and the sensitivity to
Higgs boson decays into tau-pairs in the low-mass region around 120 GeV.Comment: 20 pages, 13 ps figures, uses EPJ style fil

Definition and Verification of Security Configurations of Cyber-Physical Systems
The proliferation of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) is rais ing serious security challenges. These are complex systems, integrating
physical elements into automated networked systems, often containing a
variety of devices, such as sensors and actuators, and requiring complex
management and data storage. This makes the construction of secure
CPSs a challenge, requiring not only an adequate specification of secu rity requirements and needs related to the business domain but also
an adaptation and concretion of these requirements to define a security
configuration of the CPS where all its components are related. Derived
from the complexity of the CPS, their configurations can be incorrect
according to the requirements, and must be verified. In this paper, we
propose a grammar for specifying business domain security requirements
based on the CPS components. This will allow the definition of security
requirements that, through a defined security feature model, will result
in a configuration of services and security properties of the CPS, whose
correctness can be verified. For this last stage, we have created a cata logue of feature models supported by a tool that allows the automatic
verification of security configurations. To illustrate the results, the pro posal has been applied to automated verification of requirements in a
hydroponic system scenario.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología RTI2018-094283-B-C33 (ECLIPSE)Junta de Andalucía METAMORFOSIS (US-1381375)Junta de Castilla.La Mancha SBPLY-17-180501-000202 (GENESIS
Isolation and phenotyping of potential stem cells from the umbilical cord of the bottlenose dolphin(Tursiops truncatus)
We have successfully isolated cells with stem-like properties from bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) umbilical cord. Our results show that this cetacean species has embryonic fetal and adult stem cells as do humans and other studied mammals. This accomplishment allows to eventually investigate whether dolphins, due to their unique adaptations to aquatic environments, have special stem cell lineages or distinctive mechanisms of cell programming. Further characterization of their potency to differentiate into multiple cell lineages would fulfill numerous applicative purposes. We characterized, developed and refined a new protocol for obtaining potential stem cells from umbilical cord tissues of the bottlenose dolphin. Tissue samples were taken from umbilical cords of successful deliveries immediately after placenta ejection and collection from the water. Umbilical cord samples (2-3 cm3) were excised and subjected to enzymatic digestion and mechanical dissociation. Viable cells from specimens resident in the Oceanografic Valencia were cultured and subsequently isolated and tested for pluripotent characteristics (cell morphology, phenotype and expression of surface markers). Cell viability was confirmed also after freezing/thawing. The established protocol is suitable for collection/isolation/culture of dolphin potential mesenchymal stem cells from dolphin umbilical cord, which can be deposited in cell banks for future research needs

Serial detection of circulating tumour cells by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction assays is a marker for poor outcome in patients with malignant melanoma
BACKGROUND: Detection of circulating malignant cells (CMCs) through a reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay seems to be a demonstration of systemic disease. We here evaluated the prognostic role of RT-PCR assays in serially-taken peripheral blood samples from patients with malignant melanoma (MM). METHODS: One hundred forty-nine melanoma patients with disease stage ranging from I to III were consecutively collected in 1997. A multi-marker RT-PCR assay was used on peripheral blood samples obtained at time of diagnosis and every 6 months during the first two years of follow-up (total: 5 samples). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed after 83 months of median follow-up. RESULTS: Detection of at least one circulating mRNA marker was considered a signal of the presence of CMC (referred to as PCR-positive assay). A significant correlation was found between the rate of recurrences and the increasing number of PCR-positive assays (P = 0.007). Presence of CMC in a high number (≥2) of analysed blood samples was significantly correlated with a poor clinical outcome (disease-free survival: P = 0.019; overall survival: P = 0.034). Multivariate analysis revealed that presence of a PCR-positive status does play a role as independent prognostic factors for overall survival in melanoma patients, adding precision to the predictive power of the disease stage. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicated that serial RT-PCR assay may identify a high risk subset of melanoma patients with occult cancer cells constantly detected in blood circulation. Prolonged presence of CMCs seems to act as a surrogate marker of disease progression or a sign of more aggressive disease
