Focusing on the Fixed Point of 4D Simplicial Gravity

    Get PDF
Our earlier renormalization group analysis of simplicial gravity is extended. A high statistics study of the volume and coupling constant dependence of the cumulants of the node distribution is carried out. It appears that the phase transition of the theory is of first order, contrary to what is generally believed.Comment: Latex, 20 pages, 6 postscript figures, published versio

Cerebral plasticity in acute vestibular deficit

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of acute vestibular deficit on the cerebral cortex and its correlation with clinical signs and symptoms. Eight right-handed patients affected by vestibular neuritis, a purely peripheral vestibular lesion, underwent two brain single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in 1 month. The first SPECT analysis revealed reduced blood flow in the temporal frontal area of the right hemisphere in seven of eight patients, independent of the right/left location of the lesion. The alteration was present always in the right, non-dominant hemisphere and was reversible in some patients 1 month after the onset, together with attenuation of signs and symptoms. It may be hypothesized that the transient reduction of cortical blood flow and subsequently of cortical activity in the non-dominant hemisphere, also the expression of cerebral plasticity, may serve as a defense mechanism aimed to attenuate the vertigo symptom

A vanadium/aspirin complex controlled release using a poly(ß-propiolactone) film : Effects on osteosarcoma cells

    Get PDF
A delivery system for vanadium was developed using poly(ß-propiolactone)(PßPL) films. The release kinetics of a complex of vanadium (IV) with aspirin (VOAspi) was evaluated with lms prepared from polymers of different molecular weights, as well as with variable drug load. A sustained release of vanadium over 7 days was achieved. The drug release kinetics depends on contributions from two factors: (a) diffusion of the drug; and (b) erosion of the PßPL lm. The experimental data at an early stage of release were tted with a diffusion model, which allowed determination of the diffusion coef cient of the drug. VOAspi does not show strong interaction with the polymer, as demonstrated by the low apparent partition coef cient (approximately 10-2). UMR106 osteosarcoma cells were used as a model to evaluate the anticarcinogenic effects of the VOAspi released from the PßPL lm. VOAspi–PßPL lm inhibited cell proliferation in a dose-response manner and induced formation of approximately half of the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), an index of lipid peroxidation, compared to that with free VOAspi in solution. The unloaded PßPL lm did not generate cytotoxicity, as evaluated by cell growth and TBARS. Thus, the polymer-embedded VOAspi retained the antiproliferative effects showing lower cytotoxicity than the free drug. Results with VOAspi–PßPL lms suggest that this delivery system may have promising biomedical and therapeutic applications.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta

Impaired postural control in patients affected by tension-type headache.

Sixteen subjects, affected by chronic tension-type headache (TTH) accordingly to the International Headache Society Classification (1988) criteria, in presence of tenderness in pericranial muscles, with a mean age of 37+/-11.8 years, and ten healthy volunteer subjects, age and sex matched, were submitted to postural analysis by Static Posturography (S.Ve.P. Amplaid). Aim of the study was to evaluate whether patients with TTH have disturbed postural control, as compared to normal subjects. Postural analysis considered all posturographic variables but focused on spectral frequency analysis of body sway. In both open (OE) and closed eyes (CE) condition, spectral frequency analysis showed a significantly increased body sway at low (OE= p < or = 0.01; CE= p < or = 0.01) and middle (OE= p < or = 0.01; CE= p < or = 0.01) frequencies on the antero-posterior (y) plane and at low frequencies (OE= p < or = 0.05; CE= p < or = 0.05) on the lateral (x) plane. Statistical analysis was performed using the Student's t test for unpaired data, p value 0.05 defined significant. The proprioceptive input seems to be predominant at middle and high frequencies in maintaining posture, our results seem then to suggest a proprioceptive disturbance in TTH patients. The disturbance is likely related to chronic pericranial muscle contraction and tenderness. Posturography and spectral analysis may help not only in the diagnosis of a postural disturbance but even more in the follow-up of TTH patients, during and after a medical and/or a rehabilitative treatment

Vinculando la danza y la educación: el caso del internado Beatriz Hernández

    Get PDF

    Vanishing Theorems and String Backgrounds

We show various vanishing theorems for the cohomology groups of compact hermitian manifolds for which the Bismut connection has (restricted) holonomy contained in SU(n) and classify all such manifolds of dimension four. In this way we provide necessary conditions for the existence of such structures on hermitian manifolds. Then we apply our results to solutions of the string equations and show that such solutions admit various cohomological restrictions like for example that under certain natural assumptions the plurigenera vanish. We also find that under some assumptions the string equations are equivalent to the condition that a certain vector is parallel with respect to the Bismut connection.Comment: 25 pages, Late

Exponential instability in the fractional Calder\'on problem

In this note we prove the exponential instability of the fractional Calder\'on problem and thus prove the optimality of the logarithmic stability estimate from \cite{RS17}. In order to infer this result, we follow the strategy introduced by Mandache in \cite{M01} for the standard Calder\'on problem. Here we exploit a close relation between the fractional Calder\'on problem and the classical Poisson operator. Moreover, using the construction of a suitable orthonormal basis, we also prove (almost) optimality of the Runge approximation result for the fractional Laplacian, which was derived in \cite{RS17}. Finally, in one dimension, we show a close relation between the fractional Calder\'on problem and the truncated Hilbert transform.Comment: 17 page

Quantitative uniqueness for elliptic equations with singular lower order terms

We use a Carleman type inequality of Koch and Tataru to obtain quantitative estimates of unique continuation for solutions of second order elliptic equations with singular lower order terms. First we prove a three sphere inequality and then describe two methods of propagation of smallness from sets of positive measure.Comment: 23 pages, v2 small changes are done and some mistakes are correcte
