Effects of recreational activity on Acorn Barnacle (Tetraclita squamosa rufotincta) in the Red Sea

    Get PDF
Environmental recreation is a fast growing industry. However, in many cases the consequences for the environment are ignored. Eilat is just such a case wherein tourism is the mainstay of the city and the Red Sea is the main attraction. Most areas are developed specifically for enhancing tourism and one of the most benign of creatures, that sits permanently on rocks and seashores, is trodden upon regularly is the Acorn Barnacle (Tetraclita squamosa rufotincta). We surveyed 10 sites with the same area for the number of barnacles that were live, dead or deserted. We compared between areas frequented by recreationists, and from which, they were denied access. We found a significantly greater number of individuals, live barnacles, and fewer deserted barnacles in the restricted areas. We conclude that the Acorn Barnacles in the undisturbed areas had significantly greater probability of survival and longevity compared to those exposed to anthropogenic activity

Knowledge sharing is one of the important stages in organization’s knowledge management. Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) construction is one example of organization’s knowledge sharing activity. SOP would be well constructed by participatively involve employees because they know best about each activity in their job. To picture knowledge sharing activity in SOP construction, this research used Theory of Planned Behavior as a theoretical framework. The aim of this research was to look at employee’s knowledge sharing intention in SOP construction and factors which shaped their intention, such as attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control (PBC).This research used qualitative approach. Interviews were conducted to five respondents from the two divisions of the organization. The interviews guideline was adapted from elicitation beliefs’ questions constructed by Ajzen. The result showed that most respondents showed intention to share knowledge in SOP construction, while PBC was being evaluated as the most instrumental factor in shaping that intention. Limited intention is the result of the absence of some factors regarding knowledge sharing facility such as time availability, discussion forum and formal guideline about knowledge sharing activity. Target of the intervention which constructed by taking a closer look into that factors

Slingshot: cell lineage and pseudotime inference for single-cell transcriptomics.

BackgroundSingle-cell transcriptomics allows researchers to investigate complex communities of heterogeneous cells. It can be applied to stem cells and their descendants in order to chart the progression from multipotent progenitors to fully differentiated cells. While a variety of statistical and computational methods have been proposed for inferring cell lineages, the problem of accurately characterizing multiple branching lineages remains difficult to solve.ResultsWe introduce Slingshot, a novel method for inferring cell lineages and pseudotimes from single-cell gene expression data. In previously published datasets, Slingshot correctly identifies the biological signal for one to three branching trajectories. Additionally, our simulation study shows that Slingshot infers more accurate pseudotimes than other leading methods.ConclusionsSlingshot is a uniquely robust and flexible tool which combines the highly stable techniques necessary for noisy single-cell data with the ability to identify multiple trajectories. Accurate lineage inference is a critical step in the identification of dynamic temporal gene expression

Study of Conformally Flat Initial Data for Highly Spinning Black Holes and their Early Evolutions

We study conformally-flat initial data for an arbitrary number of spinning black holes with exact analytic solutions to the momentum constraints constructed from a linear combination of the classical Bowen-York and conformal Kerr extrinsic curvatures. The solution leading to the largest intrinsic spin, relative to the ADM mass of the spacetime epsilon_S=S/M^2_{ADM}, is a superposition with relative weights of Lambda=0.783 for conformal Kerr and (1-Lambda)=0.217 for Bowen-York. In addition, we measure the spin relative to the initial horizon mass M_{H_0}, and find that the quantity chi=S/M_{H_0}^2 reaches a maximum of \chi^{max}=0.9856 for Lambda=0.753. After equilibration, the final black-hole spin should lie in the interval 0.9324<chi_{final}<0.9856. We perform full numerical evolutions to compute the energy radiated and the final horizon mass and spin. We find that the black hole settles to a final spin of chi_{final}^{max}=0.935 when Lambda=0.783. We also study the evolution of the apparent horizon structure of this "maximal" black hole in detail.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

SUN-domain proteins: 'Velcro' that links the nucleoskeleton to the cytoskeleton

    Get PDF
The novel SUN-domain family of nuclear envelope proteins interacts with various KASH-domain partners to form SUN-domain-dependent 'bridges' across the inner and outer nuclear membranes. These bridges physically connect the nucleus to every major component of the cytoskeleton. SUN-domain proteins have diverse roles in nuclear positioning, centrosome localization, germ-cell development, telomere positioning and apoptosis. By serving both as mechanical adaptors and nuclear envelope receptors, we propose that SUN-domain proteins connect cytoplasmic and nucleoplasmic activities

Do Nest Materials and Nest Substrates affect the Breeding of \u3ci\u3eButeo hemilasius\u3c/i\u3e in the Mongolian Steppe?

Upland buzzards occur across Mongolia excluding lush taiga forest and breeds from the Mongolian Altai mountains to the western foothills of the Great Khyangan Mountains. Our field work was conducted during the breeding season of the species in Mongolia from 2001 to 2007. Nest materials of the studied nests contained natural (twigs of elm tree, shrubs, tail, and mane of horse, hair of cows, fur of sheep, goats and camels), and artificial or man-made (cotton, plastic bags, wires, cables, and others) materials. Contents of the nesting materials of the species were differed by location, region and breeding pair’s behavior. A total of 24 different nest sites were selected by breeding pairs during the study periods. Most nests were placed on the ground (22.7%), 19.7% on artificial nest platforms (three-legged poles, single poles, car tire on poles, pylons), 16.8% on rocky outcrops, 8.8% on rocky columns or cliffs, 5.26% on type A wooden poles of high power electric lines and 26.74% others. Average clutch was comparatively high for breeding pairs that nested on rock columns 3.9, abandoned buildings 3.7, ground 3.6, cliffs 3.3, type “A” wooden poles of the high power electric lines 3.3, sandy precipice 3 and others less than three. Average number of nestlings on the ruins of buildings was 3, rock columns 2.8, ground, telegraph poles and concrete poles of the high power electric lines 2.5, wooden poles of the high power electric lines and pylons 2.4, well building and livestock shelter 2, cliffs 1.6 and sandy precipices 1.5. There was a significant difference between the number of nestlings on natural and artificial substrates, including artificial nest platforms. We documented a breeding pair that was incubating three of its own eggs and a Saker falcon egg on a cliff of a mountain outcrop. We also observed twice the number of second clutches on natural substrates, which we consider to be dependent on food abundance and accessibility
