Stabilization of the cubic phase of HfO2 by Y addition in films grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition
Addition of yttrium in HfO2 thin films prepared on silicon by metal organic chemical vapor deposition is investigated in a wide compositional range (2.0-99.5 at. %). The cubic structure of HfO2 is stabilized for 6.5 at. %. The permittivity is maximum for yttrium content of 6.5-10 at. %; in this range, the effective permittivity, which results from the contribution of both the cubic phase and silicate phase, is of 22. These films exhibit low leakage current density (5x10(-7) A/cm(2) at -1 V for a 6.4 nm film). The cubic phase is stable upon postdeposition high temperature annealing at 900 degrees C under NH3. Searching for faint companions with VLTI/PIONIER. I. Method and first results
Context. A new four-telescope interferometric instrument called PIONIER has
recently been installed at VLTI. It provides improved imaging capabilities
together with high precision. Aims. We search for low-mass companions around a
few bright stars using different strategies, and determine the dynamic range
currently reachable with PIONIER. Methods. Our method is based on the closure
phase, which is the most robust interferometric quantity when searching for
faint companions. We computed the chi^2 goodness of fit for a series of binary
star models at different positions and with various flux ratios. The resulting
chi^2 cube was used to identify the best-fit binary model and evaluate its
significance, or to determine upper limits on the companion flux in case of non
detections. Results. No companion is found around Fomalhaut, tau Cet and
Regulus. The median upper limits at 3 sigma on the companion flux ratio are
respectively of 2.3e-3 (in 4 h), 3.5e-3 (in 3 h) and 5.4e-3 (in 1.5 h) on the
search region extending from 5 to 100 mas. Our observations confirm that the
previously detected near-infrared excess emissions around Fomalhaut and tau Cet
are not related to a low-mass companion, and instead come from an extended
source such as an exozodiacal disk. In the case of del Aqr, in 30 min of
observation, we obtain the first direct detection of a previously known
companion, at an angular distance of about 40 mas and with a flux ratio of
2.05e-2 \pm 0.16e-2. Due to the limited u,v plane coverage, its position can,
however, not be unambiguously determined. Conclusions. After only a few months
of operation, PIONIER has already achieved one of the best dynamic ranges
world-wide for multi-aperture interferometers. A dynamic range up to about
1:500 is demonstrated, but significant improvements are still required to reach
the ultimate goal of directly detecting hot giant extrasolar planets.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Validity of the FACIT-Sp to assess spiritual well-being in elderly patients
Among instruments measuring spiritual well-being, the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual well-being (FACIT-Sp-12) is the most widely used instrument in research. It has been validated in patients suffering from cancer or HIV/AIDS, but has rarely been used in elderly patients. The objectives of this study were to determine the psychometric properties and suitability of the FACIT-Spto assess spiritual well-being in hospitalized elderly patients. This cross-sectional study uses a mixed method approach. Subjects were patients (N = 208), aged 65 years and older, consecutively admitted in post-acute rehabilitation. Psychometric properties of the FACITSp were investigated. The internal structure of the FACIT-Sp (factor structure and internal consistency) was assessed. Convergent validity of the FACIT-Sp was assessed using the Spiritual Distress Assessment Tool (SDAT), the question "Are you at peace?" and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Predictive validity was assessed using length of stay (LOS) and discharge destination. Understanding and interpretation of FACIT-Sp items were consecutively assessed in a sub-sample of 135 patients. Results show that FACIT-Sp scores ranged from 7 to 46 (mean 29.6 ± 7.8); 23.1% of the patients had high spiritual well-being. Cronbach's α was g ood ( 0.85). Item-to-total correlations were all significant (0.34 to 0.73). Principal component analyses performed with 2 or 3 factors were only moderately consistent with previous work. FACIT-Sp correlated with SDAT, "Are you at peace?" and GDS (Rho = −0.45, P < 0.001; 0.51, P < 0.001 and −0.38, P < 0.001). No association was found with LOS or discharge destination. Spontaneous comments about one or more FACIT-Sp items were made by 97/135 (71.9%). Specifically, items that address purpose and meaning in life were frequently found difficult to answer. Analyses suggest that the FACIT-Sp may underestimate spiritual well-being in older patients. In conclusion, despite having acceptable psychometric properties, the FACIT-Sp presents limitations for measurement of spiritual well-being in hospitalized elderly patients
Polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-7) coating affects triphasic palladium electrocatalysis
A film of the polymer of intrinsic microporosity PIM-7 is coated onto a glassy carbon electrode and the resulting effects on electron transfer reactions are studied for three different types of processes: (i) aqueous solution based, (ii) solid state surface immobilised, and (iii) electrocatalytic processes on electrodeposited palladium. The effects on reactivity for hydroquinone oxidation in aqueous phosphate buffer are shown to be linked to microporosity causing a slightly lower rate of mass transport without detrimental effects on electron transfer and reaction kinetics. Next, water-insoluble microcrystalline anthraquinone is immobilised directly into the PIM-7 film and shown to give a chemically reversible reduction process, which is enhanced in the presence of PIM-7, when compared to the case of anthraquinone immobilised directly onto bare glassy carbon. Electrodeposition of a film of nano-palladium is demonstrated to give catalytically active electrodes for the reduction/oxidation of protons/hydrogen, the reduction of oxygen, and for the oxidation of formic acid and methanol. With the PIM-7 film applied onto palladium, a mechanical stabilisation effect occurs. In addition, both the hydrogen insertion and the hydrogen evolution reactions as well as formic acid oxidation are enhanced. Cross-sectional associations between air pollution and chronic bronchitis: an ESCAPE meta-analysis across five cohorts
BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess associations of outdoor air pollution on prevalence of chronic bronchitis symptoms in adults in five cohort studies (Asthma-E3N, ECRHS, NSHD, SALIA, SAPALDIA) participating in the European Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects (ESCAPE) project. METHODS: Annual average particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5, PMabsorbance, PMcoarse), NO2, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and road traffic measures modelled from ESCAPE measurement campaigns 2008-2011 were assigned to home address at most recent assessments (1998-2011). Symptoms examined were chronic bronchitis (cough and phlegm for ≥3 months of the year for ≥2 years), chronic cough (with/without phlegm) and chronic phlegm (with/without cough). Cohort-specific cross-sectional multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted using common confounder sets (age, sex, smoking, interview season, education), followed by meta-analysis. RESULTS: 15 279 and 10 537 participants respectively were included in the main NO2 and PM analyses at assessments in 1998-2011. Overall, there were no statistically significant associations with any air pollutant or traffic exposure. Sensitivity analyses including in asthmatics only, females only or using back-extrapolated NO2 and PM10 for assessments in 1985-2002 (ECRHS, NSHD, SALIA, SAPALDIA) did not alter conclusions. In never-smokers, all associations were positive, but reached statistical significance only for chronic phlegm with PMcoarse OR 1.31 (1.05 to 1.64) per 5 µg/m(3) increase and PM10 with similar effect size. Sensitivity analyses of older cohorts showed increased risk of chronic cough with PM2.5abs (black carbon) exposures. CONCLUSIONS: Results do not show consistent associations between chronic bronchitis symptoms and current traffic-related air pollution in adult European populations
Impaired Competence for Pretense in Children with Autism: Exploring Potential Cognitive Predictors.
Lack of pretense in children with autism has been explained by a number of theoretical explanations, including impaired mentalising, impaired response inhibition, and weak central coherence. This study aimed to empirically test each of these theories. Children with autism (n=60) were significantly impaired relative to controls (n=65) when interpreting pretense, thereby supporting a competence deficit hypothesis. They also showed impaired mentalising and response inhibition, but superior local processing indicating weak central coherence. Regression analyses revealed that mentalising significantly and independently predicted pretense. The results are interpreted as supporting the impaired mentalising theory and evidence against competing theories invoking impaired response inhibition or a local processing bias. The results of this study have important implications for treatment and intervention
A detector interferometric calibration experiment for high precision astrometry
Context: Exoplanet science has made staggering progress in the last two
decades, due to the relentless exploration of new detection methods and
refinement of existing ones. Yet astrometry offers a unique and untapped
potential of discovery of habitable-zone low-mass planets around all the
solar-like stars of the solar neighborhood. To fulfill this goal, astrometry
must be paired with high precision calibration of the detector.
Aims: We present a way to calibrate a detector for high accuracy astrometry.
An experimental testbed combining an astrometric simulator and an
interferometric calibration system is used to validate both the hardware needed
for the calibration and the signal processing methods. The objective is an
accuracy of 5e-6 pixel on the location of a Nyquist sampled polychromatic point
spread function.
Methods: The interferometric calibration system produced modulated Young
fringes on the detector. The Young fringes were parametrized as products of
time and space dependent functions, based on various pixel parameters. The
minimization of func- tion parameters was done iteratively, until convergence
was obtained, revealing the pixel information needed for the calibration of
astrometric measurements.
Results: The calibration system yielded the pixel positions to an accuracy
estimated at 4e-4 pixel. After including the pixel position information, an
astrometric accuracy of 6e-5 pixel was obtained, for a PSF motion over more
than five pixels. In the static mode (small jitter motion of less than 1e-3
pixel), a photon noise limited precision of 3e-5 pixel was reached
Why do dogs (Canis familiaris) select the empty container in an observational learning task?
Many argue that dogs show unique susceptibility to human communicative signals that make them suitable for being engaged in complex co-operation with humans. It has also been revealed that socially provided information is particularly effective in influencing the behaviour of dogs even when the human’s action demonstration conveys inefficient or mistaken solution of task. It is unclear, however, how the communicative nature of the demonstration context and the presence of the human demonstrator affect the dogs’ object-choice behaviour in observational learning situations. In order to unfold the effects of these factors, 76 adult pet dogs could observe a communicative or a non-communicative demonstration in which the human retrieved a tennis ball from under an opaque container while manipulating another distant and obviously empty (transparent) one. Subjects were then allowed to choose either in the presence of the demonstrator or after she left the room. Results showed a significant main effect of the demonstration context (presence or absence of the human’s communicative signals), and we also found some evidence for the response-modifying effect of the presence of the human demonstrator during the dogs’ choice. That is, dogs predominantly chose the baited container, but if the demonstration context was communicative and the human was present during the dogs’ choice, subjects’ tendency to select the baited container has been reduced. In agreement with the studies showing sensitivity to human’s communicative signals in dogs, these findings point to a special form of social influence in observational learning situations when it comes to learning about causally opaque and less efficient (compared to what comes natural to the dog) action demonstrations
Intersubband gain in a Bloch oscillator and Quantum cascade laser
The link between the inversion gain of quantum cascade structures and the
Bloch gain in periodic superlattices is presented. The proposed theoretical
model based on the density matrix formalism is able to treat the gain mechanism
of the Bloch oscillator and Quantum cascade laser on the same footing by taking
into account in-plane momentum relaxation. The model predicts a dispersive
contribution in addition to the (usual) population-inversion-dependent
intersubband gain in quantum cascade structures and - in the absence of
inversion - provides the quantum mechanical description for the dispersive gain
in superlattices. It corroborates the predictions of the semi-classical
miniband picture, according to which gain is predicted for photon energies
lower than the Bloch oscillation frequency, whereas net absorption is expected
at higher photon energies, as a description which is valid in the
high-temperature limit. A red-shift of the amplified emission with respect to
the resonant transition energy results from the dispersive gain contribution in
any intersubband transition, for which the population inversion is small.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
