Interaction between Biomphalaria pfeifferi, the snail intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, and indoplanobis exustus, a possible competitor snail
Biological control of snail intermediate host of human schistosome parasites has been suggested. In this study, the effect of Indoplanobis exustus a planorbid snail and possible competitor snail of Biomphalaria pfeifferi on the fecundity and growth rate of the later was evaluated. The results showed a significant difference in the growth rates and fecundity of I. exustus and B. pfeifferi. Maintaining the snails together, the fecundity and growth rate of B pfeifferi were greatly reduced. There was direct relationship between fecundity and growth rate. Design of an S-Band Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antenna
An S-band antenna is to operate within the frequency range of 2-4 GHz. This frequency is designed to operate at the frequency of 2.2 GHz using the dielectric substrate, FR4dielectric material of dielectric constant of 2.6. The design employed the transmission line model and parameters of the rectangular microstrip patch antenna were obtained using Microsoft excel worksheet. The result shows that the antenna has the length of 40.23 mm, width of 50.82 mm and the high of the substrate as 4.04 mm. Also, the substrate has the length or Ground plane length, Lg, of 64.45 mm and Ground plane width, Wg, of 75.04mm. From this design dimensions, the antenna can be used for devices that have limited space for antenna, or its communication unit
The globular cluster system of the nearest Seyfert II galaxy Circinus
Context. The globular cluster (GC) system of Circinus galaxy has not been
probed previously partly because of the location of the galaxy at - 3.8
Galactic latitude which suffers severely from interstellar extinction, stellar
crowding, and Galactic foreground contamination. However, the deep
near-infrared (NIR) photometry by the VISTA Variables in the Via L\'actea
Extended Survey (VVVX) in combination with the precise astrometry of Gaia EDR3
allow us to map GCs in this region.
Aims. Our long-term goal is to study and characterise the distributions of
GCs and Ultra-compact dwarfs of Circinus galaxy which is the nearest Seyfert II
galaxy. Here we conduct the first pilot search for GCs in this galaxy.
Methods. We use NIR VVVX photometry in combination with Gaia EDR3 astrometric
features such as astrometric excess noise and BP/RP excess factor to build the
first homogeneous catalogue of GCs in Circinus galaxy. A robust combination of
selection criteria allows us to effectively clean interlopers from our sample.
Results. We report the detection of 70 GC candidates in this galaxy at
a 3 confidence level. They show a bimodal colour distribution with the
blue peak at (G-Ks) = 0.9850.127 mag with a dispersion of
0.2110.091 mag and the red peak at (G-Ks) = 1.6250.177 mag with a
dispersion of 0.4820.114 mag. A GC specific frequency (S) of
1.30.2 was derived for the galaxy, and we estimated a total population of
12040 GCs. Based on the projected radial distribution it appears that
Circinus has a different distribution of GC candidates than MW and M31.
Conclusions. We demonstrate that Circinus galaxy hosts a sizeable number of
cluster candidates. This result is the first leap towards understanding the
evolution of old stellar clusters in this galaxy.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figure
Effect of photoperiod on sexual activity of boar
The main objective of this study was to assess the effect of photoperiod on sexual activity of three breeds of boars: Swedish Landrace (n=34), Large White (n=38), and Duroc (n=32). Boar sexual activity was analysed based on the libido index and intensity of ejaculation. The libido index was calculated as the ratio between the duration of ejaculation and time of preparation until ejaculation. The intensity of ejaculation was the volume of ejaculate (mL) secreted in the unit of time (min). The effect of photoperiod was analysed as the effect of duration of daylight ( lt 12 h and >12 h) within photoperiod intervals (increasing and decreasing). Impact assessment was carried out by applying the General Linear Model procedure. Libido and intensity of ejaculation varied under the impact of photoperiod and the breed of boars. With the increase in age, the boar libido weakened, while the volume of ejaculate and intensity of ejaculation increased. Boars manifested better libido when the daylight lasted longer than 12 h in both photoperiod intervals. Different from libido, the volume of ejaculate and intensity of ejaculation were highest when the daylight was shorter than 12 h, but only in the decreasing photoperiod interval. Swedish Landrace boars manifested best libido, while in the production of sperm the Duroc boars were inferior compared with Swedish Landrace and Large White. The phenotypic relationship among libido, ejaculate volume, and ejaculation intensity ranges from very low to high; however, the coefficients were positive, which indicates the possibility of simultaneous improvement of these traits
Adverse effects of extra-articular corticosteroid injections: a systematic review
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To estimate the occurrence and type of adverse effects after application of an extra-articular (soft tissue) corticosteroid injection.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A systematic review of the literature was made based on a PubMed and Embase search covering the period 1956 to January 2010. Case reports were included, as were prospective and retrospective studies that reported adverse events of corticosteroid injection. All clinical trials which used extra-articular corticosteroid injections were examined. We divided the reported adverse events into major (defined as those needing intervention or not disappearing) and minor ones (transient, not requiring intervention).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The search yielded 87 relevant studies:44 case reports, 37 prospective studies and 6 retrospective studies. The major adverse events included osteomyelitis and protothecosis; one fatal necrotizing fasciitis; cellulitis and ecchymosis; tendon ruptures; atrophy of the plantar fat was described after injecting a neuroma; and local skin effects appeared as atrophy, hypopigmentation or as skin defect. The minor adverse events effects ranged from skin rash to flushing and disturbed menstrual pattern. Increased pain or steroid flare after injection was reported in 19 studies. After extra-articular injection, the incidence of major adverse events ranged from 0-5.8% and that of minor adverse events from 0-81%. It was not feasible to pool the risk for adverse effects due to heterogeneity of study populations and difference in interventions and variance in reporting.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In this literature review it was difficult to accurately quantify the incidence of adverse effects after extra-articular corticosteroid injection. The reported adverse events were relatively mild, although one fatal reaction was reported.</p
Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change: A Synopsis of Coordinated National Crop Wild Relative Seed Collecting Programs across Five Continents
The Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change Project set out to improve the diversity,
quantity, and accessibility of germplasm collections of crop wild relatives (CWR). Between 2013 and
2018, partners in 25 countries, heirs to the globetrotting legacy of Nikolai Vavilov, undertook seed
collecting expeditions targeting CWR of 28 crops of global significance for agriculture. Here, we
describe the implementation of the 25 national collecting programs and present the key results. A total
of 4587 unique seed samples from at least 355 CWR taxa were collected, conserved ex situ, safety
duplicated in national and international genebanks, and made available through the Multilateral
System (MLS) of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (Plant
Treaty). Collections of CWR were made for all 28 targeted crops. Potato and eggplant were the most
collected genepools, although the greatest number of primary genepool collections were made for
rice. Overall, alfalfa, Bambara groundnut, grass pea and wheat were the genepools for which targets
were best achieved. Several of the newly collected samples have already been used in pre-breeding
