Proton-Pump inhibitors related acute interstitial nephritis. A case report
Background: Acute Interstitial nephritis is a common and reversible cause of Acute Kidney Injury, accounting for 15-27% of renal biopsies performed because of this condition. Its incidence has been increasing worldwide. By and large, drug-induced AIN is currently the most common etiology, with antimicrobials and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs being the most frequent offending agents. The hallmark pathologic features are interstitial edema, interstitial inflammation, and tubulitis with a predominance of CD4+ T lymphocytes and mononuclear cells, with variable numbers of eosinophils. Patients with AIN typically present with nonspecific symptoms of acute renal failure, including oliguria, malaise, anorexia, nausea, and vomiting and a high-suspicious index is necessary. A case is described of a 29-year-old Hispanic obese and diabetic female, who developed AIN after an average period of 2 years of omeprazole. The symptoms were mostly fatigue and anorexia. She had non-nephrotic range proteinuria with pyuria with a mean serum creatinine of 4.72 mg/dl. Eosinophils in urine were normal. Patient also tested positive for ANA, and initially lupus nephritis was in the differentials along with Focal segemental glomerulo-sclerosis due to obestiry. Renal biopsy showed severe interstitial inflammation with lymphoid cells, scattered neutrophils, and very rate eosinophils, ruling out FSGS and lupus nephritis. Omeprazole was discontinued, and Prednisone 60 mg daily were started. Renal recovery was total in 6 weeks post-steroid therapy. Steroids were tapered as the kidney function improved.
Conclusion: Prompt recognition, elimination of the offending source of antigen and use of a limited course of steroid therapy are the mainstay of the treatment. This will result in complete resolution in ~ 65% of cases, partial resolution in up to 20%, and irreversible damage in the rest. Recent studies strongly suggest that early steroid administration (within 7 days after diagnosis) improves the recovery of renal function, decreasing the risk of chronic renal impairment
Masonry dams : analysis of the historical profiles of Sazilly, Delocre and Rankine
The significant advances in masonry dam design that took place in the second half of the 19th century are analyzed and discussed within the context of the historical development of dam construction. Particular reference is made to the gravity dam profiles proposed by Sazilly, Delocre and Rankine, who pioneered the application of engineering concepts to dam design, basing the dam profile on the allowable stresses for the conditions of empty and full reservoir. These historical profiles are analyzed taking into consideration the present safety assessment procedures, by means of a numerical application developed for this purpose, based on limit analysis equilibrium methods, which considers the sliding failure mechanisms, the most critical for these structures. The study underlines the key role of uplift pressures, which was only addressed by Lévy after the accident of Bouzey dam, and provides a critical understanding of the original design concepts, which is essential for the rehabilitation of these historical structures. This work has been funded by FCT (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) through the PhD grant SFRH/BD/43585/2008, for which the first author is grateful

The Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment: A Harbinger For "New Physics"
QED, Hadronic, and Electroweak Standard Model contributions to the muon
anomalous magnetic moment, a_mu = (g_mu-2)/2, and their theoretical
uncertainties are scrutinized. The status and implications of the recently
reported 2.6 sigma experiment vs.theory deviation a_mu^{exp}-a_mu^{SM} =
426(165) times 10^{-11} are discussed. Possible explanations due to
supersymmetric loop effects with m_{SUSY} \simeq 55 sqrt{tan beta} GeV,
radiative mass mechanisms at the 1--2 TeV scale and other ``New Physics''
scenarios are examined.Comment: 24 page
Plant ecology meets animal cognition: impacts of animal memory on seed dispersal
We propose that an understanding of animal learning and memory is critical to predicting the impacts of animals on plant populations through
processes such as seed dispersal, pollination and herbivory. Focussing on endozoochory, we review the evidence that animal memory plays a role in seed
dispersal, and present a model which allows us to explore the fundamental consequences of memory for this process. We demonstrate that decision-making by animals based on their previous experiences has the potential to determine which plants are visited, which fruits are selected to be eaten from the plant and where seeds are subsequently deposited, as well as being an important determinant of animal survival. Collectively, these results suggest that the impact of animal learning and memory on seed dispersal is likely to be extremely important, although to date our understanding of these processes suffers from a conspicuous lack of empirical support. This is partly because of the difficulty of conducting appropriate experiments but is
also the result of limited interaction between plant ecologists and those who work on animal cognition
