The Monist Cosmopolis. Five Counterhegemonic Theses from a Bioethics of the South
En este artículo se presentan cinco Tesis de crítica contrahegemónica que cuestionan el desarrollo cosmopolita de la racionalidad monista de la Modernidad, en su expansión colonial y deshumanizadora. El mundo de vida de los seres racionales es interpretable a partir de su entorno vital, histórico, cultural y natural. Los efectos perversos del avance del dominio tecnocientífico ha puesto en riesgo, a causa de las hegemonías de poder que sirven de fundamento a los procesos sociopolíticos y económicos del mercado neoliberal y global, las condiciones materiales de reproducción de la vida al negar el thelos de sostenibilidad que permite el reconocimiento de derechos humanos inherentes a la existencia para una evolución equitativa. Desde la diversidad de saberes ancestrales característicos de las culturas latinoamericanas, otras voces se levantan para uso de una hermenéutica heterotópica de la racionalidad en contextos donde los supuestos de otro deber ser se proponen en función de una bioética del Sur: el desafío es hacer viable la emergencia de derechos humanos más cónsonos con la satisfacción de una vida deseada en paz y felicidad, un diálogo que permita la comprensión del mundo de vida donde un buen vivir sea el resultado de una convivencia solidaria con los otros y la naturaleza.This article discusses five theses of counterhegemonic critique that question the development of the monistic cosmopolitan rationality of modernity, in its colonial expansion and dehumanizing present. The life world of rational beings is interpretable from their vital, historical, cultural and natural environment. The perverse effects of the advance of techno-scientific domain has jeopardized —because of the hegemonies of power that underlie the sociopolitical and economic processes of the neoliberal and global market— the material conditions of reproduction of life by denying the thelos of sustainability which allows the recognition of inherent human rights to existence for equitable development. From the diversity of ancestral knowledge characteristic of Latin American cultures, other voices arise for the use of a heterotopic hermeneutic of rationality in contexts where the assumptions of another sense of “must” are proposed based on bioethics of the South: the challenge is to make viable the emergence of more consonant human rights with the satisfaction of a desired life in peace and happiness a dialogue to understanding the life world where good living (“buen vivir”) is the result of a harmonious coexistence with others and nature
Differences in the use of spirometry between rural and urban primary care centers in Spain
Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the ability and practice of spirometry, training of technicians, and spirometry features in primary care centers in Spain, evaluating those located in a rural environment against those in urban areas.
Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted in 2012 by a telephone survey in 970 primary health care centers in Spain. The centers were divided into rural or urban depending on the catchment population. The survey contacted technicians in charge of spirometry and consisted of 36 questions related to the test that included the following topics: center resources, training doctors and technicians, using the spirometer, bronchodilator test, and the availability of spirometry and maintenance.
Results: Although the sample size was achieved in both settings, rural centers (RCs) gave a lower response rate than urban centers (UCs). The number of centers without spirometry in rural areas doubled those in the urban areas. Most centers had between one and two spirometers. However, the number of spirometry tests per week was significantly lower in RCs than in UCs (4 [4.1%] vs 6.9 [5.7%], P,0.01). The availability of a specific schedule for conducting spirometries was higher in RCs than in UCs (209 [73.0%] vs 207 [64.2%], P=0.003). RCs were more satisfied with the spirometries (7.8 vs 7.6, P=0.019) and received more training course for interpreting spirometry (41.0% vs 33.2%, P=0.004). The performance of the bronchodilator test showed a homogeneous measure in different ways. The spirometer type and the reference values were unknown to the majority of respondents.
Conclusion: This study shows the differences between primary care RCs and UCs in Spain in terms of performing spirometry. The findings in the present study can be used to improve the performance of spirometry in these area
The nature of LINER galaxies: Ubiquitous hot old stars and rare accreting black holes
Galaxies, which often contain ionised gas, sometimes also exhibit a so-called
low-ionisation nuclear emission line region (LINER). For 30 years this was
attributed to a central mass-accreting supermassive black hole (AGN) of low
luminosity, making LINER galaxies the largest AGN-sub-population, dominating in
numbers over higher luminosity Seyfert galaxies and quasars. This, however,
poses a serious problem. While the inferred energy balance is plausible, many
LINERs clearly do not contain any other independent signatures of an AGN. Using
integral field spectroscopic data from the CALIFA survey, we aim at comparing
the observed radial surface brightness profiles with what is expected from
illumination by an AGN. Essential for this analysis is a proper extraction of
emission-lines, especially weak lines such as the Balmer Hb line which is
superposed on an absorption trough. To accomplish this, we use the GANDALF code
which simultaneously fits the underlying stellar continuum and emission lines.
We show for 48 galaxies with LINER-like emission, that the radial emission-line
surface brightness profiles are inconsistent with ionisation by a central
point-source and hence cannot be due to an AGN alone. The most probable
explanation for the excess LINER-like emission is ionisation by evolved stars
during the short but very hot and energetic phase known as post-AGB. This leads
us to an entirely new interpretation. Post-AGB stars are ubiquitous and their
ionising effect should be potentially observable in every galaxy with gas
present and stars older than ~1 Gyr, unless a stronger radiation field from
young hot stars or an AGN outshines them. This means that galaxies with
LINER-like emission are in fact not a class defined by a property, but rather
by the absence of a property. It also explains why LINER emission is observed
mostly in massive galaxies with old stars and little star formation.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Quantum mechanical spectral engineering by scaling intertwining
Using the concept of spectral engineering we explore the possibilities of
building potentials with prescribed spectra offered by a modified intertwining
technique involving operators which are the product of a standard first-order
intertwiner and a unitary scaling. In the same context we study the iterations
of such transformations finding that the scaling intertwining provides a
different and richer mechanism in designing quantum spectra with respect to

Central star formation and metallicity in CALIFA interacting galaxies
We use optical integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) data from 103 nearby
galaxies at different stages of the merging event, from close pairs to merger
remnants provided by the CALIFA survey, to study the impact of the interaction
in the specific star formation and oxygen abundance on different galactic
scales. To disentangle the effect of the interaction and merger from internal
processes, we compared our results with a control sample of 80 non-interacting
galaxies. We confirm the moderate enhancement (2-3 times) of specific star
formation for interacting galaxies in central regions as reported by previous
studies; however, the specific star formation is comparable when observed in
extended regions. We find that control and interacting star-forming galaxies
have similar oxygen abundances in their central regions, when normalized to
their stellar masses. Oxygen abundances of these interacting galaxies seem to
decrease compared to the control objects at the large aperture sizes measured
in effective radius. Although the enhancement in central star formation and
lower metallicities for interacting galaxies have been attributed to tidally
induced inflows, our results suggest that other processes such as stellar
feedback can contribute to the metal enrichment in interacting galaxies.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in Astronomy &

The Relation between Attitudes toward Functional Foods and Satisfaction with Food-Related Life
Purpose – To assess the effect of attitudes towards functional foods (FF) on university students’ satisfaction with food-related life and to distinguish student typologies, considering that the attitudes towards FF are not homogeneous among consumers. Design/methodology - A survey was applied to 372 university students (mean age=20.4 years, SD=2.4) in southern Chile. The questionnaire included the Attitudes towards Functional Foods (AFF) questionnaire and the Satisfaction with Food-related Life (SWFL) scale, questions about consumption and knowledge about FF and socio-demographic characteristics. Findings – Using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Modelling, it was found that attitudes toward functional foods directly and significantly influence students’ satisfaction with food-related life. A cluster analysis applied to the Z-scores from the factors obtained by the CFA classified three typologies: Positive towards FF (36.3%), moderately positive towards FF (43.0%) and negative towards FF (20.7%). The positive towards FF type had a significantly greater SWFL score than the negative towards FF type. The types differ according to consumption and knowledge about FF. Research limitations/implications – This study was conducted in the context of only one country in South America. Originality/value – This study is the first that assesses the effect of AFF on satisfaction with food-related life in a sample of university students. Fostering positive attitudes towards FF will allow for a growth in the degree of satisfaction with food-related life of university students with features similar to those of the study sample
Observational hints of radial migration in disc galaxies from CALIFA
Context. According to numerical simulations, stars are not always kept at their birth galactocentric distances but they have a tendency to migrate. The importance of this radial migration in shaping galactic light distributions is still unclear. However, if radial migration is indeed important, galaxies with different surface brightness (SB) profiles must display differences in their stellar population properties.
Aims: We investigate the role of radial migration in the light distribution and radial stellar content by comparing the inner colour, age, and metallicity gradients for galaxies with different SB profiles. We define these inner parts, avoiding the bulge and bar regions and up to around three disc scale lengths (type I, pure exponential) or the break radius (type II, downbending; type III, upbending).
Methods: We analysed 214 spiral galaxies from the CALIFA survey covering different SB profiles. We made use of GASP2D and SDSS data to characterise the light distribution and obtain colour profiles of these spiral galaxies. The stellar age and metallicity profiles were computed using a methodology based on full-spectrum fitting techniques (pPXF, GANDALF, and STECKMAP) to the Integral Field Spectroscopic CALIFA data.
Results: The distributions of the colour, stellar age, and stellar metallicity gradients in the inner parts for galaxies displaying different SB profiles are unalike as suggested by Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Anderson-Darling tests. We find a trend in which type II galaxies show the steepest profiles of all, type III show the shallowest, and type I display an intermediate behaviour.
Conclusions: These results are consistent with a scenario in which radial migration is more efficient for type III galaxies than for type I systems, where type II galaxies present the lowest radial migration efficiency. In such a scenario, radial migration mixes the stellar content, thereby flattening the radial stellar properties and shaping different SB profiles. However, in light of these results we cannot further quantify the importance of radial migration in shaping spiral galaxies, and other processes, such as recent star formation or satellite accretion, might play a role
Ionized gas kinematics of galaxies in the CALIFA survey : I. Velocity fields, kinematic parameters of the dominant component, and presence of kinematically distinct gaseous systems

Ionized gas kinematics provide important clues to the dynamical structure of galaxies and hold constraints to the processes driving their evolution. Aims. The motivation of this work is to provide an overall characterization of the kinematic behavior of the ionized gas of the galaxies included in the Calar Alto Legacy Integral field Area (CALIFA), offering kinematic clues to potential users of the CALIFA survey for including kinematical criteria in their selection of targets for specific studies. From the first 200 galaxies observed by CALIFA survey in its two configurations, we present the two-dimensional kinematic view of the 177 galaxies satisfaying a gas content/detection threshold. Methods. After removing the stellar contribution, we used the cross-correlation technique to obtain the radial velocity of the dominant gaseous component for each spectrum in the CALIFA data cubes for different emission lines (namely, [O ii] λλ3726,3729, [O iii] λλ4959,5007, Hα+[N ii] λλ6548,6584, and [SII]λλ6716,6730). The main kinematic parameters measured on the plane of the sky were directly derived from the radial velocities with no assumptions on the internal prevailing motions. Evidence of the presence of several gaseous components with different kinematics were detected by using [O iii] λλ4959,5007 emission line profiles. Results. At the velocity resolution of CALIFA, most objects in the sample show regular velocity fields, although the ionized-gas kinematics are rarely consistent with simple coplanar circular motions. Thirty-five percent of the objects present evidence of a displacement between the photometric and kinematic centers larger than the original spaxel radii. Only 17% of the objects in the sample exhibit kinematic lopsidedness when comparing receding and approaching sides of the velocity fields, but most of them are interacting galaxies exhibiting nuclear activity (AGN or LINER). Early-type (E+S0) galaxies in the sample present clear photometric-kinematic misaligments. There is evidence of asymmetries in the emission line profiles in 117 out of the 177 analyzed galaxies, suggesting the presence of kinematically distinct gaseous components located at different distances from the optical nucleus. The kinematic decoupling between the dominant and secondary component/s suggested by the observed asymmetries in the profiles can be characterized by a limited set of parameters. Conclusions. This work constitutes the first determination of the ionized gas kinematics of the galaxies observed in the CALIFA survey. The derived velocity fields, the reported kinematic distortions/peculiarities and the identification of the presence of several gaseous components in different regions of the objects might be used as additional criteria for selecting galaxies for specific studies.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Gravo-thermal properties and formation of elliptical galaxies
We have analyzed a sample of galaxies belonging to three clusters: Coma, Abell 85, and Abell 496 (real galaxies) and a sample of simulated elliptical galaxies formed in a hierarchical merging scheme (virtual galaxies). We use the Sersic law to describe their light profile. The specific entropy (Boltzmann-Gibbs definition) is then calculated supposing that the galaxies behave as spherical, isotropic, one-component systems. We find that, to a good approximation (about 10%), both real and virtual galaxies have an almost unique specific entropy. Within this approximation the galaxies are distributed in a thin plane in the space defined by the three Sersic law parameters, which we call the Entropic Plane. A further analysis shows that both real and virtual galaxies are in fact located on a thin line, therefore indicating the existence of another - and yet unknown - physical property, besides the uniqueness of the specific entropy. A more careful examination of the virtual galaxies sample indicates a very small increase of their specific entropy with merging generation. In a hierarchical scenario, this implies a correlation between the specific entropy and the total mass, which is indeed seen in our data. The scatter and tilt of the Entropic Line, defined by Lima Neto et al. (1999a), are reduced when this correlation is taken into account. Although one cannot distinguish between various generations for real galaxies, the distribution of their specific entropy is similar to that in the virtual sample, suggesting that hierarchical merging processes could be an important mechanism in the building of elliptical galaxies
