    Actual and Imagined Movement in BCI Gaming

    Most research on Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) focuses\ud on developing ways of expression for disabled people who are\ud not able to communicate through other means. Recently it has been\ud shown that BCI can also be used in games to give users a richer experience\ud and new ways to interact with a computer or game console.\ud This paper describes research conducted to find out what the differences\ud are between using actual and imagined movement as modalities\ud in a BCI game. Results show that there are significant differences\ud in user experience and that actual movement is a more robust way of\ud communicating through a BCI

    How much control is enough? Optimizing fun with unreliable input

    Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) provide a valuable new input modality within human- computer interaction systems, but like other body-based inputs, the system recognition of input commands is far from perfect. This raises important questions, such as: What level of control should such an interface be able to provide? What is the relationship between actual and perceived control? And in the case of applications for entertainment in which fun is an important part of user experience, should we even aim for perfect control, or is the optimum elsewhere? In this experiment the user plays a simple game in which a hamster has to be guided to the exit of a maze, in which the amount of control the user has over the hamster is varied. The variation of control through confusion matrices makes it possible to simulate the experience of using a BCI, while using the traditional keyboard for input. After each session the user �lled out a short questionnaire on fun and perceived control. Analysis of the data showed that the perceived control of the user could largely be explained by the amount of control in the respective session. As expected, user frustration decreases with increasing control. Moreover, the results indicate that the relation between fun and control is not linear. Although in the beginning fun does increase with improved control, the level of fun drops again just before perfect control is reached. This poses new insights for developers of games wanting to incorporate some form of BCI in their game: for creating a fun game, unreliable input can be used to create a challenge for the user

    Human-Computer Interaction for BCI Games: Usability and User Experience

    Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) come with a lot of issues, such as delays, bad recognition, long training times, and cumbersome hardware. Gamers are a large potential target group for this new interaction modality, but why would healthy subjects want to use it? BCI provides a combination of information and features that no other input modality can offer. But for general acceptance of this technology, usability and user experience will need to be taken into account when designing such systems. This paper discusses the consequences of applying knowledge from Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) to the design of BCI for games. The integration of HCI with BCI is illustrated by research examples and showcases, intended to take this promising technology out of the lab. Future research needs to move beyond feasibility tests, to prove that BCI is also applicable in realistic, real-world settings

    Chlamydia control activities in Europe: cross-sectional survey

    Background: Chlamydia is the most commonly reported bacterial sexually transmitted infection in Europe. The objective of the Screening for Chlamydia in Europe (SCREen) project was to describe current and planned chlamydia control activities in Europe. Methods: The authors sent a questionnaire asking about different aspects of chlamydia epidemiology and control to public health and clinical experts in each country in 2007. The principles of sexually transmitted infection control were used to develop a typology comprising five categories of chlamydia control activities. Each country was assigned to a category, based on responses to the questionnaire. Results: Experts in 29 of 33 (88%) invited countries responded. Thirteen of 29 countries (45%) had no current chlamydia control activities. Six countries in this group stated that there were plans to introduce chlamydia screening programmes. There were five countries (17%) with case management guidelines only. Three countries (10%) also recommended case finding amongst partners of diagnosed chlamydia cases or people with another sexually transmitted infection. Six countries (21%) further specified groups of asymptomatic people eligible for opportunistic chlamydia testing. Two countries (7%) reported a chlamydia screening programme. There was no consistent association between the per capita gross domestic product of a country and the intensity of chlamydia control activities (P = 0.816). Conclusion: A newly developed classification system allowed the breadth of ongoing national chlamydia control activities to be described and categorized. Chlamydia control strategies should ensure that clinical guidelines to optimize chlamydia diagnosis and case management have been implemented before considering the appropriateness of screening programmes

    Enhanced arm swing improves Parkinsonian gait with EEG power modulations resembling healthy gait

    BACKGROUND: The supplementary motor area (SMA) is implicated in stereotypic multi-limb movements such as walking with arm swing. Gait difficulties in Parkinson's Disease (PD) include reduced arm swing, which is associated with reduced SMA activity. OBJECTIVE: To test whether enhanced arm swing improves Parkinsonian gait and explore the role of the SMA in such an improvement. METHODS: Cortical activity and gait characteristics were assessed by ambulant EEG, accelerometers and video recordings in 27 PD patients with self-reported gait difficulties and 35 healthy participants when walking normally. Within these two groups, 19 PD patients additionally walked with enhanced arm swing and 30 healthy participants walked without arm swing. Power changes across the EEG frequency spectrum were assessed by Event Related Spectral Perturbation analysis of recordings from Fz over the putative SMA and gait analysis was performed. RESULTS: Baseline PD gait, characterized by reduced arm swing among other features, exhibited reduced within-step Event Related Desynchronization (ERD)/Synchronization (ERS) alternation (Fz; 20-50Hz), accompanied by a reduced step length and walking speed. All became similar to normal gait when patients walked with enhanced arm swing. When healthy controls walked without arm swing, their alternating ERD-ERS pattern decreased, mimicking baseline PD gait. CONCLUSION: Enhanced arm swing may serve as a driving force to overcome impaired gait control in PD patients by restoring reduced ERD-ERS alternation over the putative SMA. Accompanied by increased step length and walking speed, this provides a neural underpinning of arm swing as an effective rehabilitation concept for improving Parkinsonian gait

    Fetal electrocardiography and artificial intelligence for prenatal detection of congenital heart disease

    INTRODUCTION: This study aims to investigate non-invasive electrocardiography as a method for the detection of congenital heart disease (CHD) with the help of artificial intelligence.MATERIAL AND METHODS: An artificial neural network was trained for the identification of CHD using non-invasively obtained fetal electrocardiograms. With the help of a Bayesian updating rule, multiple electrocardiographs were used to increase the algorithm's performance.RESULTS: Using 122 measurements containing 65 healthy and 57 CHD cases, the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were found to be 71%, 63%, and 77%, respectively. The sensitivity was however 75% and 69% for CHD cases requiring an intervention in the neonatal period and first year of life, respectively. Furthermore, a positive effect of measurement length on the detection performance was observed, reaching optimal performance when using 14 electrocardiography segments (37.5 min) or more. A small negative trend between gestational age and accuracy was found.CONCLUSIONS: The proposed method combining recent advances in obtaining non-invasive fetal electrocardiography with artificial intelligence for the automatic detection of CHD achieved a detection rate of 63% for all CHD and 75% for critical CHD. This feasibility study shows that detection rates of CHD might improve by using electrocardiography-based screening complementary to the standard ultrasound-based screening. More research is required to improve performance and determine the benefits to clinical practice.</p

    Population mixing and incidence of cancers in adolescents and young adults between 1990 and 2013 in Yorkshire, UK

    Purpose: Epidemiological evidence suggests a role for an infectious etiology for cancers in teenagers and young adults (TYAs). We investigated this by describing associations between infection transmission using the population mixing (PM) proxy and incidence of cancers in TYAs in Yorkshire, UK. Methods: We extracted cancer cases from the Yorkshire Specialist Register of Cancer in Children and Young People from 1990 to 2013 (n = 1929). Using multivariable Poisson regression models (adjusting for effects of deprivation and population density), we investigated whether PM was associated with cancer incidence. We included population mixing–population density interaction terms to examine for differences in effects of PM in urban and rural populations. Results: Nonsignificant IRRs were observed for leukemias (IRR 1.20, 95% CI 0.91–1.59), lymphomas (IRR 1.09, 95% CI 0.90–1.32), central nervous system tumors (IRR 1.06, 95% CI 0.80–1.40) and germ cell tumors (IRR 1.14, 95% CI 0.92–1.41). The association between PM and cancer incidence did not vary in urban and rural areas. Conclusions: Study results suggest PM is not associated with incidence of cancers among TYAs. This effect does not differ between rural and urban settings
