LONG-RUN STRIGA CONTROL BY SUBSISTENCE FARMERS IN MALI

    Get PDF
A dynamic programming model is developed to identify barriers to the adoption of long-run control programs for the parasitic weed Striga. The model is applied to Sirakorola in northwestern Mali. The ability of national and village-level institutions to overcome the barriers to adoption is explored.Community/Rural/Urban Development, Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,

Village Baseline Study: Site Analysis Report for Segou – Cinzana, Mali (MA0109)

    Get PDF
The village baseline study of Tongo village in the CCAFS benchmark site of Cinzana, Mali took place from 12 to 14 July 2011. Focus group discussions were conducted separately for men and women. The village has an abundance of natural resources such as savannah, grassland, ponds, farmlands and several kinds of socio-economic infrastructure. Some of the natural resources, however, are in a state of progressive degradation due to increase in human population; indiscriminate felling of trees; clearing of forests and deforestation; lack of rainfall; drought; and animal pressure

Filling a blank on the map: 60 years of fisheries in Equatorial Guinea

    Get PDF
Despite a scarcity of pertinent information, it has been possible to reconstruct time series of marine fisheries catches for Equatorial Guinea from 1950 to 2010 using per capita fish consumption and population numbers for small-scale fisheries, catch rates and number of vessels for industrial fisheries and discard rates to estimate the discarded bycatch. Small-scale fisheries, industrial large-scale fisheries, domestic and legal and illegal foreign fisheries and their discards are all included. Total catches were estimated at 2.7 million tonnes over the time period considered, of which 653 000 t were caught domestically compared to 187 000 t reported by FAO. This shows that fisheries have more importance for Equatorial Guinea's food security than the official data suggest. In contrast to what is suggested by official figures, fisheries were shown to be strongly impacted by civil and political unrest; notably, they declined overall because of civil and political conflicts, socio-demographic dynamics, and a growing role of the newly discovered oil resources, which directly and indirectly threaten the food security of the people of Equatorial Guinea

Position Statement on Atopic Dermatitis in Sub-Saharan Africa:current status and roadmap

The first International Society of Atopic Dermatitis (ISAD) global meeting dedicated to atopic dermatitis (AD) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) was held in Geneva, Switzerland in April 2019. A total of 30 participants were present at the meeting, including those from 17 SSA countries, representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Foundation for Dermatology (IFD) (a committee of the International League of Dermatological Societies, ILDS www.ilds.org), the Fondation pour la Dermatite Atopique, as well as specialists in telemedicine, artificial intelligence and therapeutic patient education (TPE)

Structural and magnetic properties of Y6(Fe1-xMnx)23

The ternary system Y6(Fe1-xMnx)23 exhibits unusual magnetic behavior. Although both Y6Mn23 and Y6Fe23 are magnetically ordered, these ternaries show a striking reduction in both Curie temperature and magnetization. In the compositional range of x = 0.5 to 0.75, there exists no magnetic ordering at liquid helium temperatures. The Mn and Fe atoms are found to exhibit strong site preference in the Y6(Fe0.25Mn0.75)23 unannealed, Y6(Fe0.25Mn0.75)23 annealed and Y6(Fe0.5Mn0.5)23 unannealed samples. The magnetization of these compounds is field-dependent and suggests possible spin glass behavior
