The Future is Now: the Formation of Single Low Mass White Dwarfs in the Solar Neighborhood
Low mass helium-core white dwarfs (M < 0.45 Msun) can be produced from
interacting binary systems, and traditionally all of them have been attributed
to this channel. However, a low mass white dwarf could also result from a
single star that experiences severe mass loss on the first ascent giant branch.
A large population of low mass He-core white dwarfs has been discovered in the
old metal-rich cluster NGC 6791. There is therefore a mechanism in clusters to
produce low mass white dwarfs without requiring binary star interactions, and
we search for evidence of a similar population in field white dwarfs. We argue
that there is a significant field population (of order half of the detected
systems) that arises from old metal rich stars which truncate their evolution
prior to the helium flash from severe mass loss. There is a consistent absence
of evidence for nearby companions in a large fraction of low mass white dwarfs.
The number of old metal-rich field dwarfs is also comparable with the
apparently single low mass white dwarf population, and our revised estimate for
the space density of low mass white dwarfs produced from binary interactions is
also compatible with theoretical expectations. This indicates that this channel
of stellar evolution, hitherto thought hypothetical only, has been in operation
in our own Galaxy for many billions of years. One strong implication of our
model is that single low mass white dwarfs should be good targets for planet
searches because they are likely to arise from metal-rich progenitors. We also

Problematic advice from suicide prevention experts
Based on a 10-year systematic review of suicide prevention strategies, 29 suicide prevention experts from 17 European countries recommend four allegedly evidence-based strategies to be included in national suicide prevention programs. One of the recommended strategies is pharmacological treatment of depression. This recommendation is deeply problematic for several reasons.
First, it is based on a biased selection and interpretation of available evidence.
Second, the authors have failed to take into consideration the widespread corruption in the research on antidepressants.
Third, the many and serious side effects of antidepressants are not considered.
Thus, the recommendation may have deleterious consequences for countless numbers of people, and, in fact, contribute to an increase in the suicide rate rather than a decrease

Gravitational Helioseismology?
The magnitudes of the external gravitational perturbations associated with
the normal modes of the Sun are evaluated to determine whether these solar
oscillations could be observed with the proposed Laser Interferometer Space
Antenna (LISA), a network of satellites designed to detect gravitational
radiation. The modes of relevance to LISA---the , low-order , and
-modes---have not been conclusively observed to date. We find that the
energy in these modes must be greater than about in order
to be observable above the LISA detector noise. These mode energies are larger
than generally expected, but are much smaller than the current observational
upper limits. LISA may be confusion-limited at the relevant frequencies due to
the galactic background from short-period white dwarf binaries. Present
estimates of the number of these binaries would require the solar modes to have

Infrared spectroscopy of cataclysmic variables: III. Dwarf novae below the period gap and novalike variables
We present K-band spectra of the short-period dwarf novae YZ Cnc, LY Hya, BK
Lyn, T Leo, SW UMa and WZ Sge, the novalike variables DW UMa, V1315 Aql, RW
Tri, VY Scl, UU Aqr and GP Com, and a series of field dwarf stars with spectral
types ranging from K2-M6.
The spectra of the dwarf novae are dominated by emission lines of HI and HeI.
The large velocity and equivalent widths of these lines, in conjunction with
the fact that the lines are double-peaked in the highest inclination systems,
indicate an accretion disc origin. In the case of YZ Cnc and T Leo, for which
we obtained time-resolved data covering a complete orbital cycle, the emission
lines show modulations in their equivalent widths which are most probably
associated with the bright spot (the region where the gas stream collides with
the accretion disc). There are no clear detections of the secondary star in any
of the dwarf novae below the period gap, yielding upper limits of 10-30% for
the contribution of the secondary star to the observed K-band flux. In
conjunction with the K-band magnitudes of the dwarf novae, we use the derived
secondary star contributions to calculate lower limits to the distances to
these systems.
The spectra of the novalike variables are dominated by broad, single-peaked
emission lines of HI and HeI - even the eclipsing systems we observed do not
show the double-peaked profiles predicted by standard accretion disc theory.
With the exception of RW Tri, which exhibits NaI, CaI and 12CO absorption
features consistent with a M0V secondary contributing 65% of the observed
K-band flux, we find no evidence for the secondary star in any of the novalike

Strategies to Stay Alive: Adaptive Toolboxes for Living Well with Suicidal Behavior
Suicidal behavior constitutes a major global problem. Qualitative research utilizing the first-hand experiences of those who have survived attempts to take their own lives can offer much in the way of understanding how to live well despite ongoing suicidal behavior. Given that suicidal intentions and behaviors occur within the personâs subjective construal, the solutions to livingâand preferably living wellâdespite such inclinations must also be subjective and adaptive. The aim of this study was therefore to understand how individuals live with different aspects of their suicidal behavior and their use of effective strategies to protect themselves from future attempts. Thematic analysis of semi-structured, qualitative interviews with 17 participants with lived experience of suicidal behavior from the USA yielded two main themes: (i) the âdynamic relationship with suicidal behavior: living with, and throughâ, and (ii) âthe toolboxâ. Each of these themes had four subthemes. Participants in this study offered important insights into what helped them not just survive ongoing suicidal behavior, but how they created unique toolboxes to continue living, and to live well. These toolboxes contained personalized solutions to dealing with recurring threats to their subjective wellbeing and included diverse solutions from spirituality, pets, peer-support, participating in the arts, through to traditional therapeutic supports. Some participants also discussed the importance of broader social policy and societal changes that help them live. The findings highlight crucial implications for suicide prevention efforts, especially in terms of encouraging collaborations with the lived experience community and furthering a strengths-based approach to mitigating suicidal behaviors. We encourage the clinical community to work in partnership with service-users to enable them to generate effective solutions to livingâand living wellâthrough suicidal behavior
The Quiescent Spectrum of the AM CVn star CP Eri
We used the 6.5m MMT to obtain a spectrum of the AM CVn star CP Eri in
quiescence. The spectrum is dominated by He I emission lines, which are clearly
double peaked with a peak-to-peak separation of ~1900 km/s. The spectrum is
similar to that of the longer period AM CVn systems GP Com and CE 315, linking
the short and the long period AM CVn systems. In contrast with GP Com and CE
315, the spectrum of CP Eri does not show a central 'spike' in the line
profiles, but it does show lines of SiII in emission. The presence of these
lines indicates that the material being transferred is of higher metallicity
than in GP Com and CE 315, which, combined with the low proper motion of the
system, probably excludes a halo origin of the progenitor of CP Eri. We
constrain the primary mass to M_1>0.27 M_sun and the orbital inclination to 33
degr < i < 80 degr. The presence of the He I lines in emission opens up the
possibility for phase resolved spectroscopic studies which allows a
determination of the system parameters and a detailed study of helium accretion

Testing a model of antecedents and consequences of defensive pessimism and self-handicapping in school physical education
There has been very limited research on the use of self-worth protection strategies in the achievement context of school physical education (PE). Thus, this study aimed to examine some antecedents and consequences of defensive pessimism and self-handicapping. The sample comprised 534 (females n = 275; males n = 259) British pupils recruited from two schools who responded to established questionnaires. Results of structural equation modelling analysis indicated that self-handicapping and defensive pessimism were positively predicted by fear of failure and negatively predicted by competence valuation. In addition, defensive pessimism was negatively predicted by physical self-concept. In turn, defensive pessimism negatively predicted enjoyment in PE and intentions to participate in future optional PE programs. Self-handicapping did not predict enjoyment or intentions. Results from multi-sample structural equation modelling showed the specified model to be largely invariant across males and females. The findings indicate that although both strategies aim to protect oneâs self-worth, some of their antecedents and consequences in PE may differ
