Moving embedded lattice solitons
It was recently proved that isolated unstable "embedded lattice solitons"
(ELS) may exist in discrete systems. The discovery of these ELS gives rise to
relevant questions such as the following: are there continuous families of
ELS?, can ELS be stable?, is it possible for ELS to move along the lattice?,
how do ELS interact?. The present work addresses these questions by showing
that a novel differential-difference equation (a discrete version of a complex
mKdV equation) has a two-parameter continuous family of exact ELS. The
numerical tests reveal that these solitons are stable and robust enough to
withstand collisions. The model may apply to the description of a Bose-Einstein
condensate with dipole-dipole interactions between the atoms, trapped in a deep

Jupiter as an exoplanet: UV to NIR transmission spectrum reveals hazes, a Na layer and possibly stratospheric H2O-ice clouds
Currently, the analysis of transmission spectra is the most successful
technique to probe the chemical composition of exoplanet atmospheres. But the
accuracy of these measurements is constrained by observational limitations and
the diversity of possible atmospheric compositions. Here we show the UV-VIS-IR
transmission spectrum of Jupiter, as if it were a transiting exoplanet,
obtained by observing one of its satellites, Ganymede, while passing through
Jupiter's shadow i.e., during a solar eclipse from Ganymede. The spectrum shows
strong extinction due to the presence of clouds (aerosols) and haze in the
atmosphere, and strong absorption features from CH4. More interestingly, the
comparison with radiative transfer models reveals a spectral signature, which
we attribute here to a Jupiter stratospheric layer of crystalline H2O ice. The
atomic transitions of Na are also present. These results are relevant for the
modeling and interpretation of giant transiting exoplanets. They also open a
new technique to explore the atmospheric composition of the upper layers of

Population Ageing and Future Demand for Old-Age and Disability Pensions in Germany – A Probabilistic Approach
Industrialised economies are experiencing a decline in mortality alongside low fertility rates – a situation that puts social security systems under severe pressure. Population ageing is associated not only with longer periods of pension claims but also smaller cohorts eventually entering the labour market. This threatens the sustainability of pay-as-you-go social security systems for implementing or further improving appropriate reform measures; adequate forecasts of the future population structure are needed.
We propose a probabilistic approach to forecast the number of pensions in Germany up to 2040. Our model considers trends in population development, labour force participation, and early retirement, as well as the effects of pension reforms. Principal component analysis is used to manage the high degree of complexity involved in forecasting trends in old-age and disability pension claims, which arises because of cross-correlations between old-age and disability pension rates, different age groups, and gender. Time series methods enable the inclusion of autocorrelations of the pension rate time series in the model. Monte Carlo simulation is used to quantify future risk. The latter is an important feature of our model, as the future development of the population and, eventually, the pension claims and the financial burden resulting from those claims, are highly stochastic.
The model predicts that, in the median trajectory, the number of old-age pensions will increase by almost 5 million between 2017 and 2036, alongside increases in the number of disability pensions by 2036. These numbers take account of the increase in legal retirement ages as part of the 2007 pension reform. After the mid-2030s, however, a moderate decrease can be expected. The results show a clear need for further reforms, especially in the medium term
Selective and sensitive electrochemical DNA biosensor for the detection of Bacillus anthracis
The development of a selective and sensitive electrochemical DNA biosensor for detection of the
pathogen Bacillus anthracis is proposed here. The technique is based on the characteristic cyclic
voltammetry (CV) redox peaks and the very selective nature of DNA hybridization. The designed
system consists of a self-assembled layer of mercaptohexanol (MCH) and thiol linked probe (ssDNAthiol)
immobilized on gold-modified screen-printed electrodes. This direct detection technique studies
the change in potential and intensity of the surface-modified screen-printed electrodes when a 5mM
Fe(CN)6

solution in 0.1M KClis presented to the electrodic system in the range between -0.5 to 0.7V.
The increase or decrease in the electron transfer along with the varied redox potential during
immobilization of the probe and hybridization of the target was observed as CV peak current and
potential change. The proposed system showed reliable results with sensitivity up to 10pM and
selective enough to distinguish signals from DNA fragments presenting 1bp mismatches. The
fabricated system with the thiol probe once produced could be shelved for 2-3 months.Thus the strong
selective binding nature of the DNA along with the sensitive CV characters, prove to be an efficient
system for reliable detection of pathogens
Hypercalcemia upon denosumab withdrawal in primary hyperparathyroidism: a case report and literature review.
Denosumab discontinuation is associated with a rapid increase in bone resorption and a decrease in bone mineral density. Spontaneous vertebral fractures may occur as a side effect of the rebound of bone resorption. Cases of rebound-linked hypercalcemia have also been described, moderate in women with osteoporosis and breast cancer and severe in children receiving oncological doses of denosumab. We report the case of an adult woman with primary hyperparathyroidism and moderate hypercalcemia, treated with denosumab for osteoporosis, who developed severe hypercalcemia and spontaneous vertebral fractures (SVFs) after denosumab discontinuation. An 86-year-old woman with densitometric osteoporosis was treated for 3 years with 60 mg of subcutaneous denosumab every 6 months. She was known to have primary hyperparathyroidism, with a serum albumin-corrected calcium of 2.82 mmol/l (NV 2.15-2.5) at the end of denosumab effect. Nine months after the last denosumab injection, she was hospitalized due to worsening overall health. Clinical evaluation revealed severe hypercalcemia (calcium 3.35 mmol/l). Very high values of bone turnover markers (BTMs) suggested a rebound effect due to denosumab discontinuation. An X-ray showed multiple new SVFs. After injection of denosumab 60 mg, serum calcium rapidly decreased and BTMs were dramatically reduced. A surgical approach by minimally invasive parathyroidectomy allowed for definite resolution of hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia. This case suggests that hypercalcemia can be a side consequence of denosumab discontinuation, which can become severe when other causes of hypercalcemia, such as primary hyperparathyroidism, are present
Starburst radio galaxies: general properties, evolutionary histories and triggering
In this paper we discuss the results of a programme of spectral synthesis
modelling of a sample of starburst radio galaxies in the context of scenarios
for the triggering of the activity and the evolution of the host galaxies. The
starburst radio galaxies -- comprising ~15 - 25% of all powerful extragalactic
radio sources -- frequently show disturbed morphologies at optical wavelengths,
and unusual radio structures, although their stellar masses are typical of
radio galaxies as a class. In terms of the characteristic ages of their young
stellar populations (YSP), the objects can be divided into two groups: those
with YSP ages t_ysp < 0.1 Gyr, in which the radio source has been triggered
quasi-simultaneously with the main starburst episode, and those with older YSP
in which the radio source has been triggered or re-triggered a significant
period after the starburst episode. Combining the information on the YSP with
that on the optical morphologies of the host galaxies, we deduce that the
majority of the starburst radio galaxies have been triggered in galaxy mergers
in which at least one of the galaxies is gas rich. However, the triggering (or
re-triggering) of the radio jets can occur immediately before, around, or a
significant period after the final coalescence of the merging nuclei,
reflecting the complex gas infall histories of the merger events. Overall, our
results provide further evidence that powerful radio jet activity can be
triggered via a variety of mechanisms, including different evolutionary stages
of major galaxy mergers; clearly radio-loud AGN activity is not solely
associated with a particular stage of a unique type of gas accretion event.Comment: 16 pages, 3 Figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Proper motions of the HH1 jet
We describe a new method for determining proper motions of extended objects,
and a pipeline developed for the application of this method. We then apply this
method to an analysis of four epochs of [S~II] HST images of the HH~1 jet
(covering a period of ~yr).
We determine the proper motions of the knots along the jet, and make a
reconstruction of the past ejection velocity time-variability (assuming
ballistic knot motions). This reconstruction shows an "acceleration" of the
ejection velocities of the jet knots, with higher velocities at more recent
times. This acceleration will result in an eventual merging of the knots in
~yr and at a distance of from the outflow source, close to
the present-day position of HH~1.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
Wetting Properties of Seven Phosphonium Cation-Based Ionic Liquids
This paper studies the wetting properties of seven phosphonium cation-based ionic liquids: trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinate [P66614][(iC8)2PO2], trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate [P66614][BEHP], trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide [P66614][NTf2], tributyltetradecylphosphonium dodecylbenzenesulfonate [P44414][DBS], tributylethylphosphonium diethylphosphate [P4442][DEP], trihexyltetradecylphosphonium dicyanamide [P66614][DCA], and trihexyltetradecylphosphonium chloride [P66614][Cl]. The surface tension was analyzed using the Gibbs free energy in a temperature range of 293-353 K, obtaining the expected linear decrease with temperature rise. The contact angle was measured on four different surfaces (AISI 52100 steel, CrN, TiN, and ZrN) and all liquids with high surface tensions interacting with hydrophobic systems displayed high contact angles as expected. The polarity fraction (PF) and the spreading parameter (SP) were estimated to complete and improve the wetting characterization of these ionic liquids, finding TiN-[P66614][BEHP] and TiN-[P66614][(iC8)2PO2] as the most favorable surface-ionic liquid combinations from a wetting point of view
The Hayabusa Curation Facility at Johnson Space Center
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Hayabusa spacecraft made contact with the asteroid 25143 Itokawa and collected regolith dust from Muses Sea region of smooth terrain [1]. The spacecraft returned to Earth with more than 10,000 grains ranging in size from just over 300 m to less than 10 m [2, 3]. These grains represent the only collection of material returned from an asteroid by a spacecraft. As part of the joint agreement between JAXA and NASA for the mission, 10% of the Hayabusa grains are being transferred to NASA for parallel curation and allocation. In order to properly receive process and curate these samples, a new curation facility was established at Johnson Space Center (JSC). Since the Hayabusa samples within the JAXA curation facility have been stored free from exposure to terrestrial atmosphere and contamination [4], one of the goals of the new NASA curation facility was to continue this treatment. An existing lab space at JSC was transformed into a 120 sq.ft. ISO class 4 (equivalent to the original class 10 standard) clean room. Hayabusa samples are stored, observed, processed, and packaged for allocation inside a stainless steel glove box under dry N2. Construction of the clean laboratory was completed in 2012. Currently, 25 Itokawa particles are lodged in NASA's Hayabusa Lab. Special care has been taken during lab construction to remove or contain materials that may contribute contaminant particles in the same size range as the Hayabusa grains. Several witness plates of various materials are installed around the clean lab and within the glove box to permit characterization of local contaminants at regular intervals by SEM and mass spectrometry, and particle counts of the lab environment are frequently acquired. Of particular interest is anodized aluminum, which contains copious sub-mm grains of a multitude of different materials embedded in its upper surface. Unfortunately the use of anodized aluminum was necessary in the construction of the clean room frame to strengthen it and eliminate corrosion and wear over time. All anodized aluminum interior to the lab was thus covered or replaced by minimally contaminating materials
