Voxel-wise comparisons of cellular microstructure and diffusion-MRI in mouse hippocampus using 3D Bridging of Optically-clear histology with Neuroimaging Data (3D-BOND)
A key challenge in medical imaging is determining a precise correspondence between image properties and tissue microstructure. This comparison is hindered by disparate scales and resolutions between medical imaging and histology. We present a new technique, 3D Bridging of Optically-clear histology with Neuroimaging Data (3D-BOND), for registering medical images with 3D histology to overcome these limitations. Ex vivo 120 × 120 × 200 μm resolution diffusion-MRI (dMRI) data was acquired at 7 T from adult C57Bl/6 mouse hippocampus. Tissue was then optically cleared using CLARITY and stained with cellular markers and confocal microscopy used to produce high-resolution images of the 3D-tissue microstructure. For each sample, a dense array of hippocampal landmarks was used to drive registration between upsampled dMRI data and the corresponding confocal images. The cell population in each MRI voxel was determined within hippocampal subregions and compared to MRI-derived metrics. 3D-BOND provided robust voxel-wise, cellular correlates of dMRI data. CA1 pyramidal and dentate gyrus granular layers had significantly different mean diffusivity (p > 0.001), which was related to microstructural features. Overall, mean and radial diffusivity correlated with cell and axon density and fractional anisotropy with astrocyte density, while apparent fibre density correlated negatively with axon density. Astrocytes, axons and blood vessels correlated to tensor orientation
The salience of sport in cross-race friendship selection
In response to growing racial concerns, stakeholders have called for programs that facilitate positive cross-race interactions. Adolescence has been targeted as the most effective life stage to initiate programs promoting relationships. Since schools are one of the primary social influences on adolescent development, they have been emphasized as a particularly important setting for promoting intergroup contact. Sport plays an important role in the experiences of students, and contributes to intergroup relations within a school. The purpose of this study is to examine the unique effect of sport participation on cross-race friendship selection. Using data from Wave I of The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), mixed-effects regression models and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to assess the effects of sport participation on friendship heterogeneity. Overall, participation in sport activities did not significantly influence the racial heterogeneity of adolescent’s friendship networks
Ellipticity and Deviations from Orthogonality in the Polarization Modes of PSR B0329+54
We report on an analysis of the polarization of single pulses of PSR B0329+54
at 328 MHz. We find that the distribution of polarization orientations in the
central component diverges strongly from the standard picture of orthogonal
polarization modes (OPMs), making a remarkable partial annulus on the Poincare
sphere. A second, tightly clustered region of density appears in the opposite
hemisphere, at a point antipodal to the centre of the annulus. We argue that
this can be understood in terms of birefringent alterations in the relative
phase of two elliptically polarized propagation modes in the pulsar
magnetosphere (i.e. generalised Faraday rotation). The ellipticity of the modes
implies a significant charge density in the plasma, while the presence of both
senses of circular polarization, and the fact that only one mode shows the
effect, supports the view that refracted ordinary-mode rays are involved in the
production of the annulus. At other pulse longitudes the polarization
(including the circular component) is broadly consistent with an origin in
elliptical OPMs, shown here quantitatively for the first time, however
considerable non-orthogonal contributions serve to broaden the orientation

Rifted continental margins are formed by progressive extension of the lithosphere. The development of these margins plays an integral role in the plate tectonic cycle, and an understanding of the extensional process underpins much hydrocarbon exploration.A key issue is whether the lithosphere extends uniformly, or whether extension varies with depth. Crustal extension may be determined using seismic techniques. Lithospheric extension may be inferred from the waterloaded subsidence history, determined from the pattern of sedimentation during and after rifting. Unfortunately, however, many rifted margins are sediment‐starved, so the subsidence history is poorly known
Homeless drug users' awareness and risk perception of peer "Take Home Naloxone" use – a qualitative study
BACKGROUND
Peer use of take home naloxone has the potential to reduce drug related deaths. There appears to be a paucity of research amongst homeless drug users on the topic. This study explores the acceptability and potential risk of peer use of naloxone amongst homeless drug users. From the findings the most feasible model for future treatment provision is suggested.
METHODS
In depth face-to-face interviews conducted in one primary care centre and two voluntary organisation centres providing services to homeless drug users in a large UK cosmopolitan city. Interviews recorded, transcribed and analysed thematically by framework techniques.
RESULTS
Homeless people recognise signs of a heroin overdose and many are prepared to take responsibility to give naloxone, providing prior training and support is provided. Previous reports of the theoretical potential for abuse and malicious use may have been overplayed.
CONCLUSION
There is insufficient evidence to recommend providing "over the counter" take home naloxone" to UK homeless injecting drug users. However a programme of peer use of take home naloxone amongst homeless drug users could be feasible providing prior training is provided. Peer education within a health promotion framework will optimise success as current professionally led health promotion initiatives are failing to have a positive impact amongst homeless drug users
Does landscape-scale conservation management enhance the provision of ecosystem services?
Biodiversity conservation approaches are increasingly being implemented at the landscape-scale to support the maintenance
of metapopulations and metacommunities. However, the impact of such interventions on the provision of ecosystem services
is less well defined. Here we examine the potential impacts of landscape-scale conservation initiatives on ecosystem
services, through analysis of five case study areas in England and Wales. The provision of multiple ecosystem services was
projected according to current management plans and compared with a baseline scenario. Multicriteria analysis indicated
that in most cases landscape-scale approaches lead to an overall increase in service provision. Consistent increases were
projected in carbon storage, recreation and aesthetic value, as well as biodiversity value. However, most study areas
provided evidence of trade-offs, particularly between provisioning services and other types of service. Results differed
markedly between study areas, highlighting the importance of local context. These results suggest that landscape-scale
conservation approaches are likely to be effective in increasing ecosystem service provision, but also indicate that associated
costs can be significant, particularly in lowland areas
Near-Infrared Classification Spectroscopy: H-band Spectra of Fundamental MK Standards
We present a catalogue of H-band spectra for 85 stars of approximately solar
abundance observed at a resolving power of 3000 with the KPNO Mayall 4m FTS.
The atlas covers spectral types O7-M5 and luminosity classes I-V as defined on
the MK system. We identify both atomic and molecular indices and line-ratios
which are temperature and luminosity sensitive allowing spectral classification
to be carried out in the H-band. The line ratios permit spectral classification
in the presence of continuum excess emission, which is commonly found in
pre-main sequence and evolved stars. We demonstrate that with spectra of R =
1000 obtained at SNR > 50 it is possible to derive spectral types within +- 2
subclasses for late-type stars. These data are available electronically through

Chiral Analysis of Quenched Baryon Masses
We extend to quenched QCD an earlier investigation of the chiral structure of
the masses of the nucleon and the delta in lattice simulations of full QCD.
Even after including the meson-loop self-energies which give rise to the
leading and next-to-leading non-analytic behaviour (and hence the most rapid
variation in the region of light quark mass), we find surprisingly little
curvature in the quenched case. Replacing these meson-loop self-energies by the
corresponding terms in full QCD yields a remarkable level of agreement with the
results of the full QCD simulations. This comparison leads to a very good
understanding of the origins of the mass splitting between these baryons.Comment: 23 pages, 6 figure
The psychological-type profile of clergywomen in ordained local ministry in the Church of England : pioneers or custodians?
This study employs psychological-type theory to compare the psychological profile of 144 clergywomen serving in ordained local ministry in the Church of England alongside the established profile of 237 professional mobile clergywomen serving in the Church of England published by Francis, Craig, Whinney, Tilley, and Slater. The data found no significant differences between these two groups of clergywomen in terms of orientations (introversion and extraversion) or in terms of the judging process (thinking and feeling). In terms of the perceiving process, there was a significantly higher proportion of sensing types among those serving in ordained local ministry (70% compared with 35%). In terms of the attitudes, there was a significantly higher proportion of judging types among those serving in ordained local ministry (83% compared with 65%). The combined sensing judging (SJ) temperament accounted for 65% of the clergywomen serving in ordained local ministry, compared with 29% of the clergywomen serving in professional mobile ministry in the earlier study.
