    The Moderating Role of Emotion Regulation in Relationship Between Narcissism and Cyberbullying

    Along with the growing role of new technological solutions, we are becoming more and more exposed to the negative consequences of electronic forms of contact. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between cyberbullying, both from the perpetrators’ and victims’ perspectives, and emotion regulation strategies and narcissism. It was hypothesized that cyberbullying correlates positively with emotion suppression and narcissistic rivalry and negatively with cognitive reappraisal and narcissistic admiration. Within cybervictimization, a positive relationship was predicted with emotion suppression and narcissistic rivalry, and a negative relationship with narcissistic admiration. Additionally, a model assuming moderation of emotion regulation strategies in the relationship between cyberbullying perpetration and narcissistic rivalry was analyzed. Students aged 19–26 years (N = 208, 49.5% female) participated in the study and completed the following online questionnaires: the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, the European Cyberbullying Intervention Project Questionnaire, and the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire. The results indicated that cybervictimization was positively related to emotion suppression, and that narcissistic rivalry was positively related to cyberbullying and cybervictimization. The tested model of moderation was not validated for both emotion regulation strategies. The results of the research have practical implications and confirm the need for further research in this field

    Till Phone Do Us Part: The Role of Phubbing in Relationship Satisfaction and Self-Esteem

    Being distracted by the mobile phone while interacting with a love partner poses a negative threat to well-being. The present study focused on researching the correlation between phubbing, relationship satisfaction and self-esteem with the use of age and relationship length as mediators among 200 adults, men and women, in informal relationships and marriages. In regards to phubbing, two dimensions, “communication disturbance” and “phone obsession” were taken into consideration. Methods used include the Phubbing Scale, the Self-Esteem Scale, and the Relationship Assessment Scale. Women and participants in informal relationships were found to be characterized by a higher phone obsession. The findings also revealed that married couples are shown to have a higher self-esteem and a longer relationship tenure. Phubbing was found to have a negative correlation with both self-esteem and relationship satisfaction. Results have also shown gender differences and differences based on the type of relationship regarding the extent and power of correlations. Age, relationship length, self-esteem and relationship satisfaction were proven to be significant predictors of phubbing behaviour. The paper shows the impact of intrusive phone use on the quality of our lives and suggests new directions for research

    Association between Facebook addiction, self-esteem and life satisfaction: A cross-sectional study

    a b s t r a c t In recent years, many research efforts have been focused on investigation of potential connection between social networking and mental health issues. Particularly important and controversial remains the association between Facebook use, self-esteem and life satisfaction. In our cross-sectional study, on a sample of 381 Facebook users, we tested the existence and strength of this relationship using Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale (BFAS), Facebook Intensity Scale (FBI), Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (SES), and Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS). With k-means cluster analysis, we divided the sample into 3 groups: ordinary, intensive, and addicted Facebook users. The results of our study show that ordinary Facebook users differ statistically in self-esteem and life satisfaction from both addicted and intensive users. Facebook addiction was in relation with lower self-esteem. Facebook addiction was also negatively related to life satisfaction. These results are in accordance with the previously published findings of other authors in the fields of social networking psychology and psychiatry

    Facebook Intrusion as a Mediator Between Positive Capital and General Distress: A Cross-Cultural Study

    Background: Social networking sites (SNSs) play an important role in many aspects of life nowadays, and it seems to be crucial to explore their impact on human well-being and functioning. The main aim of the study was to examine the mediating role of Facebook intrusion between positive capital and general distress. Positive capital was considered as comprising self-esteem, ego-resiliency, and self-control, while general distress was seen as having three dimensions: depression, anxiety, and stress. Methods: The sample consisted of N = 4,495 participants (M = 22.96 years, SD = 5.46) from 14 countries: Australia, Cyprus, Greece, Hong Kong, Lithuania, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, Russia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and United States. We used the following methods: the Facebook Intrusion Questionnaire (FIQ), the Self-Esteem Scale (SES), the Brief Self-Control Scale (SCS), The Ego Resiliency Revised Scale and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). Results: We found that Facebook intrusion was a mediator between self-esteem and general distress and between self-control and general distress. Limitations: The present study was based on a cross-sectional study, and the measures used were self-report measures. The majority of the participants were recruited using convenience sampling. Conclusions: The present findings contribute to a better understanding on how the social media have impact on individual mental health. Implications for future studies are discussed

    Country indicators moderating the relationship between phubbing and psychological distress: A study in 20 countries

Some studies indicate that behavioural dependency is related to variables associated with the country of origin. The aim of our study was to investigate if country indicators moderated the relationship between phubbing and psychological distress. Our sample consisted of 7,315 individuals from 20 countries, who completed the Phubbing Scale and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6). The analyses also included country indicators: the Gender Gap Index (GGI), the Human Development Index (HDI), the Social Progress Index (SPI), Hofstede’s dimensions of culture, and the World Happiness Index (WHI). Our results showed that psychological distress was related to at least one dimension of phubbing (i.e., to communication disturbance or phone obsession) in all countries, which means this relationship is culturally universal. The results of the study demonstrate the importance of testing measurement invariance to determine what type of analysis and what type of conclusion are valid in a given study or comparison. Moreover, the increasing or decreasing correlation between phubbing and distress is related to some culture-level indices.This study was financed by the National Science Centre, Poland, grant no.     A psychological approach in stuttering therapy

    The presented article concerns the issue of stuttering therapy and takes into account the psychological approach. Stuttering is not only a speech fluency disorder, but the symptoms occur on several levels: neurophysiological, social and psychological. Considering the complexity of this disorder, stuttering therapy requires an interdisciplinary approach that focuses particularly on dealing with the patient’s emotions and reducing the related pathological anxiety – logophobia. This article aims to discuss the methods used in the treatment of stuttering, and assess their effectiveness. The main division of methods assumes the existence of two approaches: direct and indirect methods. Methods of direct impact on speech are aimed at reducing speech disfluencies. Among them are: rhythmisation of speech, supporting movements of hands while speaking, and extension of statements. On the other hand, indirect methods are complementary and are aimed at reducing anxiety and tension appearing in stuttering individuals. Various relaxation techniques, visualization and autogenic training may be enumerated here. These methods focus on stuttering patients’ emotions. In addition, techniques such as music therapy, psychodrama, hippotherapy, desensitization and desensibilisation are effective ways to improve the psychosocial functioning of stuttering individuals. This is a review article, so it may be used as a basis for the development and implementation of therapeutic programs with participation of a speech therapist and psychologist.Praca omawia różne metody stosowane w terapii jąkania z uwzględnieniem podejścia psychologicznego. Jąkanie jest nie tylko zaburzeniem płynności mówienia, objawy występują bowiem na kilku płaszczyznach: neurofizjologicznej, społecznej i psychologicznej. Metody bezpośrednie oddziałują na akt mowy i mają na celu zmniejszenie niepłynności mowy. Wśród nich można wymienić: rytmizację mówienia, wspomaganie wypowiedzi ruchem ręki czy wydłużenie wypowiedzi. Natomiast metody pośrednie stanowią ich uzupełnienie i koncentrują się na obniżeniu lęku oraz redukcji napięcia pojawiającego się u osoby jąkającej się. Należą do nich różnego rodzaju techniki relaksacyjne, metody oparte na wizualizacji czy treningi autogenne. Zwracają one uwagę na emocje przeżywane przez osoby jąkające się. Ponadto techniki takie jak muzykoterapia, psychodrama, hipoterapia, desentyzacja i desensybilizacja są skutecznymi sposobami polepszenia funkcjonowania psychospołecznego osób jąkających się.
