Dielectric and thermal relaxation in the energy landscape
We derive an energy landscape interpretation of dielectric relaxation times
in undercooled liquids, comparing it to the traditional Debye and
Gemant-DiMarzio-Bishop pictures. The interaction between different local
structural rearrangements in the energy landscape explains qualitatively the
recently observed splitting of the flow process into an initial and a final
stage. The initial mechanical relaxation stage is attributed to hopping
processes, the final thermal or structural relaxation stage to the decay of the
local double-well potentials. The energy landscape concept provides an
explanation for the equality of thermal and dielectric relaxation times. The
equality itself is once more demonstrated on the basis of literature data for

Multiwavelength Observations of the Gamma-Ray Blazar PKS 0528+134 in Quiescence
We present multiwavelength observations of the ultraluminous blazar-type
radio loud quasar PKS 0528+134 in quiescence during the period July to December
2009. Significant flux variability on a time scale of several hours was found
in the optical regime, accompanied by a weak trend of spectral softening with
increasing flux. We suggest that this might be the signature of a contribution
from the accretion disk at the blue end of the optical spectrum. The optical
flux is weakly polarized with rapid variations of the degree and direction of
polarization, while the polarization of the 43 GHz radio core remains steady.
Optical spectropolarimetry suggests a trend of increasing degree of
polarization with increasing wavelength, providing additional evidence for an
accretion disc contribution towards the blue end of the optical spectrum. We
constructed four SEDs indicating that even in the quiescent state, the
bolometric luminosity of PKS 0528+134 is dominated by its gamma-ray emission. A
leptonic single-zone jet model produced acceptable fits to the SEDs with
contributions to the high-energy emission from synchrotron self-Compton
radiation and Comptonization of direct accretion disk emission. Fit parameters
close to equipartition were obtained. The moderate variability on long time
scales implies the existence of on-going particle acceleration, while the
observed optical polarization variability seems to point towards a turbulent
acceleration process. Turbulent particle acceleration at stationary features
along the jet therefore appears to be a viable possibility for the quiescent

Characteristics of juvenile survivors reveal spatio-temporal differences in early life stage survival of Baltic cod
The spatio-temporal origin of surviving juvenile Baltic cod Gadus morhua was investigated by coupling age information from otolith microstructure analysis and hydrodynamic modeling, which allowed backtracking of drift routes in time and space. The suitability of hydrodynamic modeling for drift simulations of early life stages of Baltic cod up to the pelagic juvenile stage was validated by comparing model simulations with the catch distribution from a survey targeting pelagic juveniles, and mortality rates and hatch date distributions of pelagic and demersal juveniles were estimated. Hatch dates and hatch locations of juvenile survivors showed distinct patterns which did not agree well with the abundance and spatial distribution of eggs, suggesting marked spatio-temporal differences in larval survival. The good agreement of the spatio-temporal origin of survivors from this field investigation with previous modeling studies on the survival chances of early-stage larvae and with general spatio-temporal patterns of larval prey availability suggests that differences in survival are related to food availability during the early larval stage. Results are discussed in relation to the recruitment process of Baltic cod, in particular with respect to the critical period and match-mismatch hypotheses, and to possible implications for the placement of a Marine Protected Area which was established to ensure undisturbed spawning of Baltic cod
Detection and imaging in strongly backscattering randomly layered media
Abstract. Echoes from small reflectors buried in heavy clutter are weak and difficult to distinguish from the medium backscatter. Detection and imaging with sensor arrays in such media requires filtering out the unwanted backscatter and enhancing the echoes from the reflectors that we wish to locate. We consider a filtering and detection approach based on the singular value decomposition of the local cosine transform of the array response matrix. The algorithm is general and can be used for detection and imaging in heavy clutter, but its analysis depends on the model of the cluttered medium. This paper is concerned with the analysis of the algorithm in finely layered random media. We obtain a detailed characterization of the singular values of the transformed array response matrix and justify the systematic approach of the filtering algorithm for detecting and refining the time windows that contain the echoes that are useful in imaging
The HERMES Back Drift Chambers

Application of the daily egg production method to Baltic sprat
Baltic sprat (Sprattus sprattus balticus, Schneider 1908) is a key species in the Baltic Sea ecosystem, where it is the most abundant planktivorous fish. In the present study, we applied the daily egg production method (DEPM) for the years 1999â2008 to estimate the size of the stock component reproducing in the Bornholm Basin, a major spawning ground for sprat and cod. This is the first study assessing this stock with a fishery independent egg production method for a consecutive time series of ten years. DEPM stock size estimates were compared with those obtained by a multi species virtual population analysis for the same stock component and results from an acoustic survey. In general, the results obtained by the DEPM were in the same order of magnitude compared to the other methods and most similar to the acoustic estimate. However, in some years differences between methods were substantial. With respect to previous egg production methods to assess Baltic sprat stock components our approach takes several aspects into account which were ignored before, e.g. effect of ambient temperature range on sprat egg stage duration and mortality and interannual variability of adult stock parameters. Since the accurate determination of the daily spawning fraction bears major uncertainties, different scenarios were tested for this parameter. Least deviation compared to the other assessment methods was obtained when using a daily female spawning fraction of 24%, which corresponds well to values described in literature. The applicability of the DEPM to Baltic sprat was clearly demonstrated. Thus, it can serve as valuable tool for the estimation of Baltic sprat stock sizes independent of data obtained from commercial fisheries
Multiwavelength Intraday Variability of the BL Lac S5 0716+714
We report results from a 1 week multi-wavelength campaign to monitor the BL
Lac object S5 0716+714 (on December 9-16, 2009). In the radio bands the source
shows rapid (~ (0.5-1.5) day) intra-day variability with peak amplitudes of up
to ~ 10 %. The variability at 2.8 cm leads by about 1 day the variability at 6
cm and 11 cm. This time lag and more rapid variations suggests an intrinsic
contribution to the source's intraday variability at 2.8 cm, while at 6 cm and
11 cm interstellar scintillation (ISS) seems to predominate. Large and
quasi-sinusoidal variations of ~ 0.8 mag were detected in the V, R and I-bands.
The X-ray data (0.2-10 keV) do not reveal significant variability on a 4 day
time scale, favoring reprocessed inverse-Compton over synchrotron radiation in
this band. The characteristic variability time scales in radio and optical
bands are similar. A quasi-periodic variation (QPO) of 0.9 - 1.1 days in the
optical data may be present, but if so it is marginal and limited to 2.2
cycles. Cross-correlations between radio and optical are discussed. The lack of
a strong radio-optical correlation indicates different physical causes of
variability (ISS at long radio wavelengths, source intrinsic origin in the
optical), and is consistent with a high jet opacity and a compact synchrotron
component peaking at ~= 100 GHz in an ongoing very prominent flux density
outburst. For the campaign period, we construct a quasi-simultaneous spectral
energy distribution (SED), including gamma-ray data from the FERMI satellite.
We obtain lower limits for the relativistic Doppler-boosting of delta >= 12-26,

Tissue S100/calgranulin expression and blood neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in dogs with lower urinary tract urothelial carcinoma.
BACKGROUND
Urothelial carcinoma (UC) is the most common neoplasm of the canine lower urinary tract, affecting approximately 2% of dogs. Elderly female patients of certain breeds are predisposed, and clinical signs of UC can easily be confused with urinary tract infection or urolithiasis. Diagnosis and treatment are challenging given the lack of disease-specific markers and treatments. The S100A8/A9 complex and S100A12 protein are Ca2+-binding proteins expressed by cells of the innate immune system and have shown promise as urinary screening markers for UC. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) can also aid in distinguishing certain neoplastic from inflammatory conditions. Our study aimed to evaluate the tissue expression of S100/calgranulins and the blood NLR in dogs with UC. Urinary bladder and/or urethral tissue samples from dogs with UC (nâ=â10), non-neoplastic inflammatory lesions (NNUTD; nâ=â6), and no histologic changes (nâ=â11) were evaluated using immunohistochemistry. Blood NLRs were analyzed in dogs with UC (nâ=â22) or NNUTD (nâ=â26).
RESULTS
Tissue S100A12-positive cell counts were significantly higher in dogs with lower urinary tract disease than healthy controls (Pâ=â0.0267 for UC, Pâ=â0.0049 for NNUTD), with no significant difference between UC and NNUTD patients. Tissue S100A8/A9-positivity appeared to be higher with NNUTD than UC, but this difference did not reach statistical significance. The S100A8/A9+-to-S100A12+ ratio was significantly decreased in neoplastic and inflamed lower urinary tract tissue compared to histologically normal specimens (Pâ=â0.0062 for UC, Pâ=â0.0030 for NNUTD). NLRs were significantly higher in dogs with UC than in dogs with NNUTD, and a cut-off NLR ofââ€â2.83 distinguished UC from NNUTD with 41% sensitivity and 100% specificity. Higher NLRs were also associated with a poor overall survival time (Pâ=â0.0417).
CONCLUSIONS
These results confirm that the S100/calgranulins play a role in the immune response to inflammatory and neoplastic lower urinary tract diseases in dogs, but the tissue expression of these proteins appears to differ from their concentrations reported in urine samples. Further investigations of the S100/calgranulin pathways in UC and their potential as diagnostic or prognostic tools and potential therapeutic targets are warranted. The NLR as a routinely available marker might be a useful surrogate to distinguish UC from inflammatory conditions
