    Weekly periodicities of Aerosol Optical Thickness over Central Europe ? evidence of an anthropogenic direct aerosol effect

    International audienceStatistical analyses of data from ground-based sun photometer stations in Central Europe are presented. All stations are part of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET), and only data of the highest data quality level 2.0 has been applied. The averages by weekday of Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) at a wavelength of 440 nm of 12 of the 14 stations in the investigation area show a weekly periodicity with lowest values on Sunday and Monday, but greatest values from Wednesday until Saturday, that is significant at least on a 90% level. The stations in Germany and in Greater Paris show weekly cycles with ranges of about 20% on average. In Northern Italy and Switzerland this range is about 10% on average. By applying several checks, we exclude that the weekly cycles were caused by a maintenance effect or by different retrieval conditions as a consequence of a weekly cycle in cloud cover. The corresponding weekly cycle of anthropogenic gaseous and particulate emissions leads us to the conclusion of the anthropogenic origin of the weekly AOT cycle. Since these AOT patterns are derived from the reduction of the direct sun radiation by the columnar atmospheric aerosol, this result represents strong evidence for an anthropogenic direct aerosol effect on shortwave radiation. Furthermore, this study makes a first contribution to the understanding and explanation of recently observed weekly periodicities in meteorological variables as temperature in Germany

    The comprehensive model system COSMO-ART - Radiative impact of aerosol on the state of the atmosphere on the regional scale

    A new fully online coupled model system developed for the evaluation of the interaction of aerosol particles with the atmosphere on the regional scale is described. The model system is based on the operational weather forecast model of the Deutscher Wetterdienst. Physical processes like transport, turbulent diffusion, and dry and wet deposition are treated together with photochemistry and aerosol dynamics using the modal approach. Based on detailed calculations we have developed parameterisations to examine the impact of aerosol particles on photolysis and on radiation. Currently the model allows feedback between natural and anthropogenic aerosol particles and the atmospheric variables that are initialized by the modification of the radiative fluxes. The model system is applied to two summer episodes, each lasting five days, with a model domain covering Western Europe and adjacent regions. The first episode is characterised by almost cloud free conditions and the second one by cloudy conditions. The simulated aerosol concentrations are compared to observations made at 700 stations distributed over Western Europe. <br><br> For each episode two model runs are performed; one where the feedback between the aerosol particles and the atmosphere is taken into account and a second one where the feedback is neglected. Comparing these two sets of model runs, the radiative feedback on temperature and other variables is evaluated. <br><br> In the cloud free case a clear correlation between the aerosol optical depth and changes in global radiation and temperature is found. In the case of cloudy conditions the pure radiative effects are superposed by changes in the liquid water content of the clouds due to changes in the thermodynamics of the atmosphere. In this case the correlation between the aerosol optical depth and its effects on temperature is low. However, on average a decrease in the 2 m temperature is still found. <br><br> For the area of Germany we found on average for both cases a reduction in the global radiation of about 6 W m<sup>2</sup>, a decrease of the 2 m temperature of 0.1 K, and a reduction in the daily temperature range of −0.13 K

These models explained the ways by which natural selection can lead to the gradual emergence of human language. It was shown that the Nowak's conjecture is true for a class of spaces defined by a certain condition on the distance function. A connection between Nowak's model and standard information-theoretic models was indicated

    Tourette syndrome as a motor disorder revisited – Evidence from action coding

    Because tics are the defining clinical feature of Tourette syndrome, it is conceptualized predominantly as a motor disorder. There is some evidence though suggesting that the neural basis of Tourette syndrome is related to perception–action processing and binding between perception and action. However, binding processes have not been examined in the motor domain in these patients. If it is particularly perception–action binding but not binding processes within the motor system, this would further corroborate that Tourette syndrome it is not predominantly, or solely, a motor disorder. Here, we studied N = 22 Tourette patients and N = 24 healthy controls using an established action coding paradigm derived from the Theory of Event Coding framework and concomitant EEG-recording addressing binding between a planned but postponed, and an interleaved immediate reaction with different levels of overlap of action elements. Behavioral performance during interleaved action coding was normal in Tourette syndrome. Response locked lateralized readiness potentials reflecting processes related to motor execution were larger in Tourette syndrome, but only in simple conditions. However, pre-motor processes including response preparation and configuration reflected by stimulus-locked lateralized readiness potentials were normal. This was supported by a Bayesian data analysis providing evidence for the null hypothesis. The finding that processes integrating different action-related elements prior to motor execution are normal in Tourette syndrome suggests that Tourette it is not solely a motor disorder. Considering other recent evidence, the data show that changes in “binding” in Tourette syndrome are specific for perception–action integration but not for action coding

    8-year multicenter retrospective study on partial laminate veneers

    Purpose: This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the survival and success rates of ceramic partial laminate veneers. Scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate fractures and marginal defects. Methods: In total, 31 patients received 79 partial laminate veneers on the maxillary anterior teeth. After adhesive luting, restorations were evaluated by calibrated clinicians for up to eight years using modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. In addition, epoxy resin replicas were fabricated from silicone impressions and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. Survival analyses were performed using the Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests (α = 0.05). Success was analyzed in percentages by comparing the baseline and last follow-up. Results: The cumulative survival rates were 100% after 1 year; 95.9% (SE 2.8%) after 5 years; and 61.4% (SE 25.3%) after 8 years. No significant differences (P &gt; 0.05) were observed between functional and non-functional restorations. Changes in the USPHS criteria evaluation were only observed for adaptation: 12.5% (SE 4.7%), marginal discoloration: 4.2% (SE 3.0%), color match: 4.2% (SE 3.0%), and fractures: 16.7% (SE 5.3%). Scanning electron microscopy evaluations revealed undetected initial cracks and deficiencies in the restorations. Conclusions: Partial laminate veneers displayed good survival rates during the long-term follow-up. The main problems observed were related to the quality of the margins, color mismatch, and restoration integrity. However, in most cases, restoration replacement was not required.</p

    Intact Organization of Tactile Space Perception in Isolated Focal Dystonia

    Background: Systematic perceptual distortions of tactile space have been documented in healthy adults. In isolated focal dystonia impaired spatial somatosensory processing is suggested to be a central pathophysiological finding, but the structure of tactile space for different body parts has not been previously explored. Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess tactile space organization with a novel behavioral paradigm of tactile distance perception in patients with isolated focal dystonia and controls. Methods: Three groups of isolated focal dystonia patients (cervical dystonia, blepharospasm/Meige syndrome, focal hand dystonia) and controls estimated perceived distances between 2 touches across 8 orientations on the back of both hands and the forehead. Results: Stimulus size judgments differed significantly across orientations in all groups replicating distortions of tactile space known for healthy individuals. There were no differences between groups in the behavioral parameters we assessed on the hands and forehead. Conclusions: Tactile space organization is comparable between patients with isolated focal dystonia and healthy controls in dystonic and unaffected body parts
