    La hematuria vesical bovina en Colombia: estudios morfológicos, estructura y ultraestructura.

    El trabajo tiene como fin clarificar el tipo de lesiones asociadas con la hematuria vesical bovina. Se describen los cambios morfológicos observados mediante la utilización de microscopía de luz y microscopía electrónica, tanto en animales experimentales como en casos de ocurrencia natural. Para el estudio de casos de ocurrencia natural, con el fin de obtener biópsias vesicales para estudios de microscopía de luz, microscopía electrónica y para lograr una evaluación comparativa de la patología de las lesiones de casos de ocurrencia natural y experimentales, se estudiaron 2 vacas Holstein adultas con hematuria, provenientes de una región hiperendémica. De cada una se tomaron 20 biópsias vesicales ciegas con un citoscopio de uso humano y con un fibrogastroscopio con visión derecha. Para el estudio de casos experimentales se estudiaron 3 bovinos, 2 machos y una hembra, raza Holstein, sirviendo un cuarto animal como control. A estos animales se les suministró un kilogramo diario de una mezcla de helecho desecado (Pteridium aquilinum, var. Arachnoidea), con una ración diaria de pastos y ensilaje. Los animales fueron sometidos a necropsia obteniéndose muestras de epitelio para estudios de microscopía electrónica y de todos los tejidos para microscopía de luz. Las lesiones halladas van desde cistitis hasta neoplasias de origen vascular y epitelial.     La papilomatosis faríngea bovina en Colombia

    Se discute sobre la enfermedad conocida como papilomatosis faríngea bovina o tusa. Se describen los resultados de la investigación de la enfermedad bajo los aspectos epidemiológico, morfológico, clínico y microbiológico y su posible implicación en salud pública. El estudio epidemiológico basado en una población de 5445 bovinos en el norte de Antioquia, demostró que la enfermedad no afecta a machos de ninguna edad y sí en forma severa a las vacas adultas mayores de tres años. No se obtuvo reportes de machos enfermos, por lo cual se puede afirmar que es un factor ligado al sexo. La raza más afectada es la Holstein seguida por la Ayrshire. La enfermedad se presenta en áreas montañosas de suelos áridos con temperatura media de 15 grados centígrados. Predominan en estos suelos las malezas y existen algunas fincas en la región con pastos mejorados y praderas en las cuales el problema ha decrecido o desaparecido totalmente. El estudio morfológico demostró la presencia de varios tipos de lesiones en la cavidad bucal que van desde papilomas a carcinomas escamosos con invasión de tejidos adyacentes y metástasis a los ganglios linfáticos regionales. Estudios ultraestructurales son indicativos de un proceso citopático de naturaleza viral. Las muestras obtenidas de animales enfermos han sido estudiadas en líneas celulares y cultivos primarios, en ambos casos se ha observado un efecto citopático celular.     Demagnetization via Nucleation of the Nonequilibrium Metastable Phase in a Model of Disorder

    We study both analytically and numerically metastability and nucleation in a two-dimensional nonequilibrium Ising ferromagnet. Canonical equilibrium is dynamically impeded by a weak random perturbation which models homogeneous disorder of undetermined source. We present a simple theoretical description, in perfect agreement with Monte Carlo simulations, assuming that the decay of the nonequilibrium metastable state is due, as in equilibrium, to the competition between the surface and the bulk. This suggests one to accept a nonequilibrium "free-energy" at a mesoscopic/cluster level, and it ensues a nonequilibrium "surface tension" with some peculiar low-T behavior. We illustrate the occurrence of intriguing nonequilibrium phenomena, including: (i) Noise-enhanced stabilization of nonequilibrium metastable states; (ii) reentrance of the limit of metastability under strong nonequilibrium conditions; and (iii) resonant propagation of domain walls. The cooperative behavior of our system may also be understood in terms of a Langevin equation with additive and multiplicative noises. We also studied metastability in the case of open boundaries as it may correspond to a magnetic nanoparticle. We then observe burst-like relaxation at low T, triggered by the additional surface randomness, with scale-free avalanches which closely resemble the type of relaxation reported for many complex systems. We show that this results from the superposition of many demagnetization events, each with a well- defined scale which is determined by the curvature of the domain wall at which it originates. This is an example of (apparent) scale invariance in a nonequilibrium setting which is not to be associated with any familiar kind of criticality.Comment: 26 pages, 22 figure

    COVAD survey 2 long-term outcomes: unmet need and protocol

    Vaccine hesitancy is considered a major barrier to achieving herd immunity against COVID-19. While multiple alternative and synergistic approaches including heterologous vaccination, booster doses, and antiviral drugs have been developed, equitable vaccine uptake remains the foremost strategy to manage pandemic. Although none of the currently approved vaccines are live-attenuated, several reports of disease flares, waning protection, and acute-onset syndromes have emerged as short-term adverse events after vaccination. Hence, scientific literature falls short when discussing potential long-term effects in vulnerable cohorts. The COVAD-2 survey follows on from the baseline COVAD-1 survey with the aim to collect patient-reported data on the long-term safety and tolerability of COVID-19 vaccines in immune modulation. The e-survey has been extensively pilot-tested and validated with translations into multiple languages. Anticipated results will help improve vaccination efforts and reduce the imminent risks of COVID-19 infection, especially in understudied vulnerable groups

    Anurans from the Lower Cretaceous Jehol Group of western Liaoning, China

    BACKGROUND: To date, the Lower Cretaceous Jehol Group of western Liaoning, China has yielded five monotypic genera of anurans, including Liaobatrachus grabaui, Callobatrachus sanyanensis, Mesophryne beipiaoensis, Dalianbatrachus mengi, and Yizhoubatrachus macilentus. However, the validity and distinctness of these taxa have been questioned. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDING: We provide a comprehensive analysis of the Jehol frogs that includes a re-examination of the published taxa as well as an examination of a number of new specimens that have been collected over the past 10 years. The results show that the five previously named taxa can be referred to three species of one genus-Liaobatrachus grabaui, L. beipiaoensis comb. nov. and L. macilentus comb. nov.. The diagnosis of Liaobatrachus is revised, and a new diagnosis is provided for each species of this genus. We also establish Liaobatrachus zhaoi sp. nov., on the basis of a dozen well-preserved specimens from a new locality. This taxon is distinguished by a unique combination of characteristics, including relatively long hind limbs, a rounded rather than triangular acetabulum, and a gradually-tapering cultriform process of the parasphenoid. In addition, an unnamed frog from a higher horizon, which has narrow sacral diapophyses and particularly long legs, is different from Liaobatrachus and represents another form of anuran in the Jehol Biota. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Comparisons with other Mesozoic and extant anurans and the primary phylogenetic analysis both suggest that Liaobatrachus is a member of the anuran crown-group and forms a polytomy with leiopelmatids (Ascaphus and Leiopelma) and the remaining crown-group anurans (Lalagobatrachia).Liping Dong, Zbyněk Roček, Yuan Wang, Marc E H.
