Mapping political trust and involvement in the personality space - A meta-analysis and new evidence

Objective: Relations between the Big Five personality dispositions and individual differences in political trust and involvement in politics have been investigated in many studies. We aimed to systematically integrate these findings and further explore the correlations at different hierarchical levels of the Big Five and political trust and involvement. Method: We conducted a meta-analysis of 43 publications (N1 = 207,360 participants) and estimated latent correlations at different hierarchical levels using two additional samples (N2 = 988 and N3 = 795). Results: The meta-analysis revealed substantial correlations between involvement and openness (+), extraversion (+), and neuroticism (−), but only small correlations between trust and the Big Five. We also found a substantial amount of inconsistency in findings across studies. Our additional analyses showed that (a) correlations with the Big Five were larger for higher-order factors of general political trust (as opposed to subdimensions such as trust in politicians) and general political involvement (as opposed to subdimensions such as political interest) and (b) correlational patterns within each Big Five domain differed across facets. Conclusion: Our analyses indicate that political involvement is more strongly linked to the Big Five than political trust. We discuss the theoretical and empirical relevance of hierarchical constructs

Debate Liberal Comunitarista: Sandel Contra Rawls

Pretende-se apresentar a crítica comunitarista de Michael Sandel ao liberalismo de Rawls. Há dois pontos principais. O primeiro é mostrar como Sandel interpreta o pensamento de Rawls e como esta leitura suporta a sua crítica ao liberalismo. O segundo é apontar para uma falha na interpretação de Sandel, de forma que possamos apresentar os limites de sua crítica

O debate dos desencontros: uma avaliação das críticas de Michal Sandel ao liberalismo de John Rawls.

O principal objetivo de Micheal Sandel, no livro Liberalismo e os limites da justiça, foi atacar o conceito de deontologia de John Rawls. Nesse artigo, pretende-se argumentar que Sandel interpretou o conceito de deontologia de um modo equivocado. Há uma diferença entre a forma como Rawls definiu este conceito e a maneira como foi interpretado por Sandel. Dado isso, na primeira parte desse artigo, será analisado o modo como Sandel interpretou o conceito de deontologia na filosofia de Rawls. A segunda parte apresenta uma avaliação do confronto entre os dois autores à luz da diferença no modo como ambos compreendem o significado da deontologia no liberalismo político.The main objective of Micheal Sandel’s Liberalism and the Limits of Justice was to attack the concept of deontology, as formulated by John Rawls. In this article, I argue that Sandel interpreted the concept of deontology in a misleading way. There is a difference between how Rawls defined this concept and how it was interpreted by Sandel. Given this, the first part of this article will analyze the way Sandel interpreted the Rawlsian concept of deontology. The second part presents an assessment of the clash between the two authors in light of the differences in the way both of them understood the meaning of deontology in political liberalism

The Objective of this paper is to present the debate around the book A Theory of Justice, by the American philosopher John Rawls. Th e article is divided into two parts. Ideology and the limits of self-interest: System justification motivation and conservative advantages in mass politics

It is commonly assumed that political attitudes are driven by self-interest and that poor people heavily favor policies aimed at redistributing wealth. This assumption fails to explain the popularity of economic conservatism and the degree of support for the capitalist system. Such outcomes are typically explained by the suggestion that most poor people believe they will become rich one day. In a representative sample of low-income Americans, we observed that less than one-fourth were optimistic about their economic prospects. Those respondents who believed that they would become rich one day were no more likely to endorse the legitimacy of the system and no more supportive of conservative ideology or the Republican Party, compared to those who did not believe they would become rich. From a system justification perspective, we propose that people are motivated to defend the social systems on which they depend, and this confers a psychological advantage to conservative ideology. Providing ideological support for the status quo serves epistemic motives to reduce uncertainty, existential motives to reduce threat, and relational motives to share reality with members of mainstream society. We summarize evidence from the United States, Argentina, Lebanon, and other countries bearing on these propositions—including a survey administered shortly before the 2016 U.S. Presidential election—and discuss political implications of system justification motivation.Fil: Jost, John T.. A evolução da Web 2.0 trouxe alguns desafios para o desenvolvimento de aplicações ad hoc (conhecidas também como aplicações situacionais) com objetivo de atingir uma meta específica de negócio. Esses aplicativos são normalmente construídos com a integração de informações de fontes de dados heterogêneas e distribuídas. Neste cenário a abordagem SOA apresenta o conceito de composição de serviços, com a finalidade de reutilizar serviços existentes para o desenvolvimento de novos aplicativos. A proposta da composição de serviços mashup é estender as características de composição apresentadas em SOA com o objetivo de simplificar o desenvolvimento de aplicações ad hoc.
