    On the Size and the Approximability of Minimum Temporally Connected Subgraphs

    We consider temporal graphs with discrete time labels and investigate the size and the approximability of minimum temporally connected spanning subgraphs. We present a family of minimally connected temporal graphs with nn vertices and Ω(n2)\Omega(n^2) edges, thus resolving an open question of (Kempe, Kleinberg, Kumar, JCSS 64, 2002) about the existence of sparse temporal connectivity certificates. Next, we consider the problem of computing a minimum weight subset of temporal edges that preserve connectivity of a given temporal graph either from a given vertex r (r-MTC problem) or among all vertex pairs (MTC problem). We show that the approximability of r-MTC is closely related to the approximability of Directed Steiner Tree and that r-MTC can be solved in polynomial time if the underlying graph has bounded treewidth. We also show that the best approximation ratio for MTC is at least O(2log1ϵn)O(2^{\log^{1-\epsilon} n}) and at most O(min{n1+ϵ,(ΔM)2/3+ϵ})O(\min\{n^{1+\epsilon}, (\Delta M)^{2/3+\epsilon}\}), for any constant ϵ>0\epsilon > 0, where MM is the number of temporal edges and Δ\Delta is the maximum degree of the underlying graph. Furthermore, we prove that the unweighted version of MTC is APX-hard and that MTC is efficiently solvable in trees and 22-approximable in cycles

    49Cr: Towards full spectroscopy up to 4 MeV

    The nucleus 49Cr has been studied analysing gamma-gamma coincidences in the reaction 46Ti(alpha,n)49Cr at the bombarding energy of 12 MeV. The level scheme has been greatly extended at low excitation energy and several new lifetimes have been determined by means of the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method. Shell model calculations in the full pf configuration space reproduce well negative-parity levels. Satisfactory agreement is obtained for positive parity levels by extending the configuration space to include a nucleon-hole either in the 1d3/2 or in the 2s1/2 orbitals. A nearly one-to-one correspondence is found between experimental and theoretical levels up to an excitation energy of 4 MeV. Experimental data and shell model calculations are interpreted in terms of the Nilsson diagram and the particle-rotor model, showing the strongly coupled nature of the bands in this prolate nucleus. Nine values of K(pi) are proposed for the levels observed in this experiment. As a by-result it is shown that the values of the experimental magnetic moments in 1f7/2 nuclei are well reproduced without quenching the nucleon g-factors.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure

    High-spin states and band terminations in v 49

    High-spin states in 49 V have been studied through the 28 Si(28 Si, α3p) reaction using the EUROBALL γ-ray detector array. The 49 V level scheme has been extended up to 13.1 MeV including 21 new states. Both negative and positive parity states have been interpreted in the framework of theShell Model.     Transition rates and nuclear structure changes in mirror nuclei 47Cr and 47V

    Lifetime measurements in the mirror nuclei 47Cr and 47V were performed by means of the Doppler-shift attenuation method using the multidetector array EUROBALL, in conjunction with the ancillary detectors ISIS and the Neutron Wall.     In this paper I argue that what regulates the (in-)felicity of the V-initial orders in MG has little to do with the oldness/novelty of referents of lexical items, or with possible restrictions on the syntax of discourse functions per se. Rather, I show that V-initial orders in MG fulfil independent requirements which run on the Syntax-IC Interface

    Spectroscopy near the proton drip line in the deformed A=130 mass region : the Pr-126 nucleus

    The near proton drip line nucleus Pr-126 was studied via in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy using the Ca-40 + Mo-92 reaction at 190 MeV. We observed for the first time excited states above the known isomer in this nucleus up to 31 h over bar. The observed band is discussed in the interacting boson-fermion-fermion model.The calculations and the experimental information suggest a spin 8(+) for the lowest observed state.With such a spin assignment the moment of inertia of Pr-126 gets larger than in the heavier Pr isotopes, suggesting a sudden change in deformation close to the proton drip line

    Performance of 1\ell_1 Regularization for Sparse Convex Optimization

    Despite widespread adoption in practice, guarantees for the LASSO and Group LASSO are strikingly lacking in settings beyond statistical problems, and these algorithms are usually considered to be a heuristic in the context of sparse convex optimization on deterministic inputs. We give the first recovery guarantees for the Group LASSO for sparse convex optimization with vector-valued features. We show that if a sufficiently large Group LASSO regularization is applied when minimizing a strictly convex function ll, then the minimizer is a sparse vector supported on vector-valued features with the largest 2\ell_2 norm of the gradient. Thus, repeating this procedure selects the same set of features as the Orthogonal Matching Pursuit algorithm, which admits recovery guarantees for any function ll with restricted strong convexity and smoothness via weak submodularity arguments. This answers open questions of Tibshirani et al. and Yasuda et al. Our result is the first to theoretically explain the empirical success of the Group LASSO for convex functions under general input instances assuming only restricted strong convexity and smoothness. Our result also generalizes provable guarantees for the Sequential Attention algorithm, which is a feature selection algorithm inspired by the attention mechanism proposed by Yasuda et al. As an application of our result, we give new results for the column subset selection problem, which is well-studied when the loss is the Frobenius norm or other entrywise matrix losses. We give the first result for general loss functions for this problem that requires only restricted strong convexity and smoothness

    Multiservice capacity and interference statistics of the uplink of high altitude platforms (HAPs) for asynchronous and synchronous WCDMA system

    In this work, the capacity and the interference statistics of the uplink of high-altitude platforms (HAPs) for asynchronous and synchronous WCDMA system assuming finite transmission power and imperfect power control are studied. Propagation loss used to calculate the received signal power is due to the distance, shadowing, and wall insertion loss. The uplink capacity for 3- and 3.75-G services is given for different cell radius assuming outdoor and indoor voice users only, data users only and a combination of the two services. For 37 macrocells HAP, the total uplink capacity is 3,034 outdoor voice users or 444 outdoor data users. When one or more than one user is an indoor user, the uplink capacity is 2,923 voice users or 444 data users when the walls entry loss is 10 dB. It is shown that the effect of the adjacent channels interference is very small
