Oil Palm Leaf and Corn Stalk – Mechanical Properties and Surface Characterization
AbstractAgro waste can be defined as waste from agricultural plant. Oil palm leaf and corn stalk can be categorized as ago waste material. At first, the comparison between oil palm leaf and corn stalk by mechanical properties from soda pulping process. After that, this study focusing on surface characterization by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Both materials have a potential due to the mechanical properties (tensile, tear, burst and fold) and surface characterization but corn stalk shows more in strength and compactness due to fibre characterization compared to oil palm leaf. This study promoting the green technology in developing a friendly product and suitable to be used as an alternative pulp in paper making industry
Limestone-zeolite biocomposite as potential low-cost adsorbent for landfill leachate remediation
A novel approach for the low-cost bioadsorbent for the removal of leachate pollutants is presented herein. In this study, limestone is combined with zeolite in order to fabricate biocomposite media with different ratios. Results revealed that limestone-zeolite biocomposite adsorbed ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N) and COD, which could possibly be used for the adsorption of NH3-N and COD efficiently from leachate. The optimum mixing ratio by means was carried out using series of batch experiments for limestone and zeolite to measure the remediation of NH3-N and COD in a stabilized leached. The optimum ratio for limestone and zeolite in the remediation of NH3-N and COD obtained were at 25:15 (82%) and 30:10 (75%), respectively. Indeed, the prepared limestone-zeolite biocomposite is a low-cost and effective adsorbent was potential used to derive the NH3-N and COD for a promising adsorption efficiency from stabilized landfill leachate
Malaysia halal trust : between reality and challenges
Public confidence regarding the permissibility of certain products or whether it is lawful, particularly for Muslims, founded through the display or the label to verify the halal certification issued by an authorized organization or recognized. Accordingly, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) is an organization that has the authority to issue halal certificates, especially in Malaysia. Islam has laid down rules and regulations for driving humanity to adhere to the principles of Islam prescribed in the Quran and Hadith. The research methodology of this paper is to use library research methods. This article describes the rules and regulations mentioned in the Quran and hadith which are the two primary sources of Islam. This article also describes recent developments in the halal industry conducted by the Malaysian government. In fact, it has been a goal of the government to make Malaysia a global halal hub. The purpose of this article is to introduce Malaysia as a halal hub at the international level and to share experience in the challenges and
problems when conducting activities related to the halal industry. Finally, some proposals for improving the operations of halal in Malaysia has been proposed by some academics involved, so it provides an opportunity for a broad agenda for future research in the halal industry in Malaysia
Islamic Tourism: The Characteristics, Concept and Principles
The Islamic economic sector has grown rapidly in Malaysia and Islamic businesses can be found in a wide range of sectors including culinary, Islamic finance, Islamic takaful (insurance and mortgage) industries, fashion, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, entertainment, and tourism industries. Islamic tourism, in particular, offers a new means of developing the tourism industry in Malaysia whilst maintaining the ethics, culture and values of Islam. Islamic tourism is not defined as a visit to the mosque alone, but the visit is closely related to nature, culture, or creativity that integrates with Islamic values. Currently, the concept of adherence to Islam (which has been called as Shariah-compliant) has gained traction across the globe. In response to this new lifestyle trend, many countries (including those such as Korea, Japan, Australia, Thailand, and New Zealand which do not have a domestic Muslim majority) are beginning to introduce tourism products related to the halal concept or Islamic orientation. The definition of Islamic tourism is still unclear and encompasses various terms such as Halal Tourism, Halal Friendly Travel Destinations, Halal Travel, Islamic Travel Destinations, and Halal Lifestyle. Even in Malaysia, a leader in this sector, the concept of Islamic tourism is still liminal. However it offers huge potential, both for the country’s tourism sector and the country’s Islamic population, contributing to the preservation and appreciation of Islamic culture in Malaysia. Islamic tourism is not only related to religious values but also must be in line with every way of life that is not contrary to Islam. Not many companies and agencies organize halal tourism packages because they think it is not a necessity and a profit. Many companies are more focused on routine Islamic tourism such as Umrah and Hajj. This paper considers in detail the characteristics, concept and principles of Islamic tourism
Maqasid al-Shariah perspectives on the implementation of Hire-Purchase Act 1967 in Malaysia with reference to Al-Ijarah Thumma al-Bai' financing contract
This study aims to critically examine the meaning of the Al-Ijarah Thumma al-Bai' (AiTAB) contract and hire-purchase (HP) contract. It is also to explore several issues regarding the procedures of the Malaysian Hire-Purchase Act 1967 and it's contradiction to the Shariah. There are three main issues that were highlighted; transferring of ownership, right and liability, and charges. The Maqasid al-Shariah framework is a compatible approach for this study to solve these issues which does not only to harmonise both contracts but also in morally aspect. The findings of this study demonstrate how Maqasid al-Shariah should employ HP contract issues that might not be contradicted to AiTAB in developing a better understanding between AiTAB and HP practices as Islamic banking product
Micro-peat as a potential low-cost adsorbent material for COD and NH3-N removal
Micro-peat (M-P) was demonstrated in the present study as a potential low cost natural adsorbent for the removal of COD and ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N) from landfill leachate. A series of batch experiments were carried out under fixed conditions and the influence of mixture ratio was investigated. The characteristics of leachate were then determined. Results indicated that leachate is non-biodegradable with high concentration of COD (2739.06 mg/L), NH3-N (1765.34 mg/L) and BOD5/COD ratio (0.09). The optimum ratio for activated carbon (AC) and M-P in the removal of COD and NH3-N obtained were at 2.5:1.5 (87%) and 1.0:3.0 (65%) respectively. The low-cost natural adsorbent used in the present investigation is an attractive alternative to the conventional adsorbent (AC). Thus, M-P can be appropriated for use in leachate treatment that could be cost-effective due its local availability and adsorption property
