Molecular systematics of Trilliaceae II. Phylogenetic analyses of Trillium and its allies using sequences of rbcL and matK genes of cpDNA and internal transcribed spacers of 18S-26S nrDNA

Abstract Coding regions of the rbcL and matK genes of cpDNA and internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA were sequenced to study phylogenetic relationships within and among all four genera of Trilliaceae: Trillium, Paris, Daiswa and Kinugasa. The rbcL gene has evolved much slower than matK and in particular ITS; hence the phylogenetic trees based on the rbcL gene show a much lower resolution than trees based on either matK or ITS. The general topology of phylogenetic trees resulting from separate parsimony analyses of the matK and ITS sequences are relatively congruent, with the exception of the placement of T. pusillum. Both matK and ITS phylogenies reveal that T. rivale diverges at the base of the trees. In both trees, Paris, Daiswa and Kinugasa form a relatively weakly supported group. Within this group, the allo-octaploid Kinugasa japonica is the sister group of Daiswa species. The Paris-Daiswa-Kinugasa group, the major Trillium group, and T. undulatum and T. govanianum showed a loosely related topology, but their affinities are not evident according to these two molecular markers. However, phylogenetic analysis of amino acid sequences derived from matK shows that T. rivale together with clades T. undulatum-T. govanianum, Daiswa-Kinugasa and Paris is basally diverged as a sister group to the remainder of Trillium

Histological evidence for a supraspinous ligament in sauropod dinosaurs

Supraspinous ossified rods have been reported in the sacra of some derived sauropod dinosaurs. Although different hypotheses have been proposed to explain the origin ofthis structure, histological evidence has never been provided to support or reject any of them. In order to establish its origin, we analyse and characterize the microstructure of thesupraspinous rod of two sauropod dinosaurs from the Upper Cretaceous of Argentina. The supraspinous ossified rod is almost entirely formed by dense Haversian bone. Remains ofprimary bone consist entirely of an avascular tissue composed of two types of fibre-like structures, which are coarse and longitudinally (parallel to the main axis of the element) oriented. These structures are differentiated on the basis of their optical properties under polarized light. Very thin fibrous strands are also observed in some regions. These small fibres are all oriented parallel to one another but perpendicular to the element main axis. Histological features of the primary bone tissue indicate that the sacral supraspinous rod corresponds to an ossified supraspinous ligament. The formation of this structure appears to have been a non-pathological metaplastic ossification, possibly induced by the continuous tensile forces applied to the element.Fil: Cerda, Ignacio Alejandro. K0(K0ˉ)K^0(\bar{K^0}) Production in Two-Photon Processes at TRISTAN

We have carried out an inclusive measurement of K0(K0ˉ)K^0(\bar{K^0}) production in two-photon processes at TRISTAN. The mean s\sqrt{s} was 58 GeV and the integrated luminosity was 199 pb1^{-1}. High-statistics KsK_s samples were obtained under such conditions as no-, anti-electron, and remnant-jet tags. The remnant-jet tag, in particular, allowed us, for the first time, to measure the cross sections separately for the resolved-photon and direct processes.Comment: 20 pages, Latex format, 4 figures and KEK-mark included.

Measurement of the forward-backward asymmetries for charm- and bottom-quark pair productions at <s><\sqrt{s}>=58GeV with electron tagging

We have measured, with electron tagging, the forward-backward asymmetries of charm- and bottom-quark pair productions at =58.01GeV, based on 23,783 hadronic events selected from a data sample of 197pb1^{-1} taken with the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. The measured forward-backward asymmetries are AFBc=0.49±0.20(stat.)±0.08(sys.)A_{FB}^c = -0.49 \pm 0.20(stat.) \pm 0.08 (sys.) and AFBb=0.64±0.35(stat.)±0.13(sys.)A_{FB}^b = -0.64 \pm 0.35(stat.) \pm 0.13 (sys.), which are consistent with the standard model predictions.Comment: 19 pages, Latex format (article), 5 figures included. to be published in Phys. We have measured the inclusive D±D^{*\pm} production cross section in a two-photon collision at the TRISTAN e+ee^+e^- collider. The mean s\sqrt{s} of the collider was 57.16 GeV and the integrated luminosity was 150 pb1pb^{-1}. The differential cross section (dσ(D±)/dPTd\sigma(D^{*\pm})/dP_T) was obtained in the PTP_T range between 1.6 and 6.6 GeV and compared with theoretical predictions, such as those involving direct and resolved photon processes.Comment: 8 pages, Latex format (article), figures corrected, published in Phys. A New Pterosaur (Pterodactyloidea: Azhdarchidae) from the Upper Cretaceous of Morocco

The Kem Kem beds in South Eastern Morocco contain a rich early Upper (or possibly late Lower) Cretaceous vertebrate assemblage. Fragmentary remains, predominantly teeth and jaw tips, represent several kinds of pterosaur although only one species, the ornithocheirid Coloborhynchus moroccensis, has been named. Here, we describe a new azhdarchid pterosaur, Alanqa saharica nov. gen. nov. sp., based on an almost complete well preserved mandibular symphysis from Aferdou N'Chaft. We assign additional fragmentary jaw remains, some of which have been tentatively identified as azhdarchid and pteranodontid, to this new taxon which is distinguished from other azhdarchids by a remarkably straight, elongate, lance-shaped mandibular symphysis that bears a pronounced dorsal eminence near the posterior end of its dorsal (occlusal) surface. Most remains, including the holotype, represent individuals of approximately three to four meters in wingspan, but a fragment of a large cervical vertebra, that probably also belongs to A. saharica, suggests that wingspans of six meters were achieved in this species. The Kem Kem beds have yielded the most diverse pterosaur assemblage yet reported from Africa and provide the first clear evidence for the presence of azhdarchids in Gondwana at the start of the Late Cretaceous. This, the relatively large size achieved by Alanqa, and the additional evidence of variable jaw morphology in azhdarchids provided by this taxon, indicates a longer and more complex history for this clade than previously suspected

Measurement of inclusive electron cross section in γγ\gamma \gamma collisions at TRISTAN

We have studied open charm production in γγ\gamma \gamma collisions with the TOPAZ detector at the TRISTAN e+ee^{+}e^{-} collider. In this study, charm quarks were identified by electrons (and positrons) from semi-leptonic decays of charmed hadrons. The data corresponded to an integrated luminosity of 95.3 pb1^{-1} at a center-of-mass energy of 58 GeV. The results are presented as the cross sections of inclusive electron production in γγ\gamma \gamma collisions with an anti-tag condition, as well as the subprocess cross sections, which correspond to resolved-photon processes. The latter were measured by using a sub-sample with remnant jets. A comparison with various theoretical predictions based on direct and resolved-photon processes showed that our data prefer that with relatively large gluon contents in a photon at small x(x0.1)x (x \le 0.1), with the next-to-leading order correction, and with a charm-quark mass of 1.3 GeV.Comment: 26 pages, Latex format (article), 5 figures included, to be published in Phys. Toxoplasmosis is a disease of vertebrate animals and it is capable of being transmitted to humans (zoonosis). Toxoplasmosis is caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplama gondii. Cats are the definitive host of T. gondii where this parasite will enter the cat's body through what it eats such as rats, raw meat, or water that is contaminated with oocysts of the T. gondii parasite. This condition is generally experienced by stray cats or domesticated cats which are often given raw meat. The purpose of this activity is to increase public understanding of the dangers of toxoplasmosis and how to prevent and anticipate the spread of toxoplasmosis in Kupang City. The method used in this community education was through presentation and discussions about the danger of toxoplasmosis. To measure the level of understanding of the participants about the dangers of toxoplasma, a questionnaire is given at the beginning and at the end of the activity. A total of 38 participants from the productive youth groups in Kupang City were involved in this activity. The result of this activity shows that the public is increasingly educated about toxoplasmosis and how it is transmitted
