JOURNAL REPUTATION AND JOURNAL ARTICLE QUALITY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF EDUCATIONAL RESEARCHERS AT A SWEDISH UNIVERSITY

Get PDF
Aim: Starting from some follow-up research questions such as for instance how authors determine the scholarly ‘quality’ of their own and others’ outputs, and whether they include bibliometric indicators in that assessment, this qualitative study is aimed at a modest ambition: to seek the reasons behind educational researchers’ decision to publish their texts in certain journals, and how they, as educational researchers, judge the quality of a journal article. Theory: Since research work and knowledge acquisition are not purely carried out individually, Social Epistemology theory developed by Alvin Goldman is used as a framework of this study to examine educational researchers’ knowledge about the quality of research. Method: Time constraints led me to use a combination of purposive and convenience sampling to get participants as quickly as possible. Individual semi-structured interviews are carried out in two different ways: actual face-to-face and online face-to-face due to unexpected circumstances. Four educational researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, are interviewed. Data is then analysed using a thematic analysis of responses. Results: The findings show firstly that even if researchers publish under pressure from University demands, they can still act selflessly, for example by seeking publication in a struggling journal they wish to support. Secondly, predatory journals are quite worrisome for most educational researchers in terms of research quality. Thirdly, originality and research contribution are expexted from a research. And lastly, the study also finds that research articles that interest many readers are judged to be a good quality journal article by respondents

The paper discusses the construction of a collective research project focused on the analysis of the youth from a “marginalized” urban area. The subjects of the research are all students of a high school, created by a local university specifically for the needs of their community. We look into the processes of their construction as knowing subjects that possess their own ideas on what it means to be young, participate in personal networks, and have had a unique experience related to the human rights, which more than often are violated in the case of “marginalized” youth. In the paper we discuss the very elaboration of the research object. Based on the constructivist paradigm of the systems approach of Rolando Garcia, our research has led us to make explicit our own standing on the empirical problem we have chosen and thus the epistemological and theoretical position we adopt to construct the research problem. The “parts” and the “processes” our system is made of are the product of our standing on the issue we analyse in the research. Adherents to the “epistemology of the south” of Boaventura De Sousa Santos and the critical perspective on culture and development of Esteban Krotz, we apply “alternative” concepts to “name” the empirical referents and serve of the complex systems thinking to reveal the “other” side of the urban area known as the “south” of Mérida. Marginalized, poor and violent, according to the official and media discourse, in our research it also stands out as a context of social injustice, racism, and discrimination in which some young people have risen as subjects that have defied their life circumstances, and have constructed ideas of what the good life and happiness –a good, dignified, free, and happy life (as Krotz (2002 y 2004) puts it)– would be like. This utopian horizon which the subjects aspire to reach –its components, challenges, and strategies to make it closer– is something we try to make visible through the analysis of the three principal sub-categories that conform the three subsystems of the major system that our research delimits as its object

Languaging to trigger change: second-order intercultural conversations with urban youth of Maya descent

The paper presents an applied research project that looks into whether the Yucatec Maya language can become an identity factor for the urban youth of Maya descent inhabitants of a marginal urban area in southeastern Mexico, against the entropic tendency towards the Yucatec Maya language loss in the urban environment. Our starting point is Maturana’s idea that through languaging and emotioning human worlds are built and maintained; our lives are intertwined in interactional networks, therefore we only exist as human beings through conversations we hold with other human beings. We go on to explore the types of connection to the Maya culture and language in the case of the young men and women who took part in a workshop “My life and the Maya culture: roots and relations”, and how this connection is constructed through languaging and emotioning whithin their families, personal networks, and the workshop itself. The conversations –that emerge through languaging and emotioning– are seen as potential triggers of changes in representations and attitudes towards the minorized language and culture. We also maintain that for the changes to be sustainable, the rest of the local society, viewed as a cultural multiverse (Krotz, 2004), is to recognize Maya speakers as legitimate others (Maturana & Nisis, 2014), so that the non-Maya groups are also to engage to ensure the structural coupling between the diverse parts that conform the multiverse. Our role as researchers, then, is not that of external observers; we assume our part in the cultural multiverse as participants in its construction who by languaging, emotioning, and subsequent acting, seek to contribute to a broader acceptance and respect towards the minorized language and its speakers

Ebstein Anomaly in Pregnancy

Get PDF
A 27-year-old primiparous woman with 28 weeks gestational age was admitted to our hospital with worsening shortness of breath. She was diagnosed with Ebstein’s anomaly three years ago, but preferred to be left untreated. The patient was not cyanotic and her vital signs were stable. Her ECG showed incomplete RBBB and prolonged PR-interval. Blood tests revealed mild anemia. Observation of two-dimensional echo with color flow Doppler study showed Ebstein’s anomaly with PFO as additional defects, EF of 57%, LV and LA dilatation, RV atrialization, severe TR, and moderate PH with RVSP of 44.3 mmHg. The patient then underwent elective sectio caesaria at 30 weeks of gestational age; both the mother and her baby were alive and were in good conditions. Problem: there was an increasing breathlessness in this patient so that there was an increasing need to take a decision for her pregnancy.Ebstein’s anomaly is a complicated congenital anomaly. Medical treatment may be followed for many years in patients with mild forms of Ebstein’s anomaly. Surgery should be considered if there is objective evidence of debasement such as significant enlargement of heart size, reduction of systolic function in echocardiography

Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina. The plastic marine debris pollution is a current global issue. This research studied the coastal pollution with marine debris in three beaches in Punta Hermosa, in the south of Lima (El Silencio, Señoritas and Caballeros), for which the Clean Coast Index was used as an indicator of the degree of pollution. Additionally, the marine debris was characterized by its size, color, and type of material, following the AMETEC protocol. It was found that 91,8% of the marine debris found on the beaches was plastic. In Caballeros beach the total density was of 2,037 items/m2. In El Silencio beach the density was of 1,235 items/m2 and in Señoritas had the highest density with 5,944 items/m2. As a consequence the three beaches were classified as “extremely dirty” (CCI >20). The type of plastic most commonly found were plastic films as fragments (i.e. fragments of food packaging), followed by fibers in form of monofilaments of plastic (i.e. fishing nets). The three colors most abundant were transparent, green and blue. Moreover, the spatial distribution of the marine debris showed that the accumulation occurred mainly in the middle and upper zone of the beach (supralittoral zone), which is related to the influence of beachgoers
