Description and performance of MEA, The magnetic detector at adone
Abstract The experimental detector at Adone, MEA, which operates with its magnetic field perpendicular to the e + e − beams is described. Studies of the magnetic compensation for operation at Adone and resulting magnetic fields are presented. Particles are detected and analyzed using narrow-gap and wide-gap spark chambers which are triggered by scintillation and proportional counters. Momentum measurements for charged particles are made with Δ / p / p = ±0.07 at p = 1 Gev/ c ( B = 2.5 kG) and angles are measured to better than ± 1.5° over a solid angle of ∼0.3 × 4 π sr
'To live and die [for] Dixie': Irish civilians and the Confederate States of America
Around 20,000 Irishmen served in the Confederate army in the Civil War. As a result, they left behind, in various Southern towns and cities, large numbers of friends, family, and community leaders. As with native-born Confederates, Irish civilian support was crucial to Irish participation in the Confederate military effort. Also, Irish civilians served in various supporting roles: in factories and hospitals, on railroads and diplomatic missions, and as boosters for the cause. They also, however, suffered in bombardments, sieges, and the blockade. Usually poorer than their native neighbours, they could not afford to become 'refugees' and move away from the centres of conflict. This essay, based on research from manuscript collections, contemporary newspapers, British Consular records, and Federal military records, will examine the role of Irish civilians in the Confederacy, and assess the role this activity had on their integration into Southern communities. It will also look at Irish civilians in the defeat of the Confederacy, particularly when they came under Union occupation. Initial research shows that Irish civilians were not as upset as other whites in the South about Union victory. They welcomed a return to normalcy, and often 'collaborated' with Union authorities. Also, Irish desertion rates in the Confederate army were particularly high, and I will attempt to gauge whether Irish civilians played a role in this. All of the research in this paper will thus be put in the context of the Drew Gilpin Faust/Gary Gallagher debate on the influence of the Confederate homefront on military performance. Measurement of the Charged Multiplicities in b, c and Light Quark Events from Z0 Decays
Average charged multiplicities have been measured separately in , and
light quark () events from decays measured in the SLD experiment.
Impact parameters of charged tracks were used to select enriched samples of
and light quark events, and reconstructed charmed mesons were used to select
quark events. We measured the charged multiplicities:

which we derived the differences between the total average charged
multiplicities of or quark events and light quark events: and . We compared
these measurements with those at lower center-of-mass energies and with
perturbative QCD predictions. These combined results are in agreement with the
QCD expectations and disfavor the hypothesis of flavor-independent

New final focus system for the SLAC linear collider
The final focus system of the SLC has been upgraded by replacing the final quadrupole magnets with higher gradient superconducting magnets positioned closer to the interaction point. The parameters of the new system have been chosen to be compatible with the SLD detector with a minimum of changes to other final focus components. Commissioning plans for the new system are also presented. 5 refs., 1 fig
On the mechanisms governing gas penetration into a tokamak plasma during a massive gas injection
A new 1D radial fluid code, IMAGINE, is used to simulate the penetration of gas into a tokamak plasma during a massive gas injection (MGI). The main result is that the gas is in general strongly braked as it reaches the plasma, due to mechanisms related to charge exchange and (to a smaller extent) recombination. As a result, only a fraction of the gas penetrates into the plasma. Also, a shock wave is created in the gas which propagates away from the plasma, braking and compressing the incoming gas. Simulation results are quantitatively consistent, at least in terms of orders of magnitude, with experimental data for a D 2 MGI into a JET Ohmic plasma. Simulations of MGI into the background plasma surrounding a runaway electron beam show that if the background electron density is too high, the gas may not penetrate, suggesting a possible explanation for the recent results of Reux et al in JET (2015 Nucl. Fusion 55 093013)
Factors Associated with Revision Surgery after Internal Fixation of Hip Fractures
Background: Femoral neck fractures are associated with high rates of revision surgery after management with internal fixation. Using data from the Fixation using Alternative Implants for the Treatment of Hip fractures (FAITH) trial evaluating methods of internal fixation in patients with femoral neck fractures, we investigated associations between baseline and surgical factors and the need for revision surgery to promote healing, relieve pain, treat infection or improve function over 24 months postsurgery. Additionally, we investigated factors associated with (1) hardware removal and (2) implant exchange from cancellous screws (CS) or sliding hip screw (SHS) to total hip arthroplasty, hemiarthroplasty, or another internal fixation device. Methods: We identified 15 potential factors a priori that may be associated with revision surgery, 7 with hardware removal, and 14 with implant exchange. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards analyses in our investigation. Results: Factors associated with increased risk of revision surgery included: female sex, [hazard ratio (HR) 1.79, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.25-2.50; P = 0.001], higher body mass index (fo

Final focus supports for a TeV Linear Collider
Final focus quadrupoles supported from structures in the endcap region of a physics experiment appear to meet the high-frequency vibration and stability criteria for a TeV Linear Collider (TLC). B-Factory Final Focus System using superconducting quadrupoles
Experience with the superconducting final focus quadrupoles for the SLAC Linear Collider can be applied to a B-Factory built into the existing CESR tunnel. Such a system appears to accommodate detector and machine requirements. 4 figs., 2 tabs

Proposal to study the reactions p + p --> p + (p + pi+ + pi-) / (n + pi+) at 200-GeV and 500-GeV
We would like to study isobar formation at 200-500 GeV in the moderate t-range (-0.1>t>-0.4), concentrating on the modes (p{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) and (n{pi}{sup +}). These isobar decay modes have such strong signatures that every event will be fully reconstructed with at least a 1C fit even without momentum analysis. Existing evidence is that these modes are either dominant or very strong in the cases of several known isobars. Logistically, our experiment is designed to be suitable for the initial phase of operation of the NAL accelerator. We require only a diffraction-scattered proton beam. The apparatus required is small, simple, and compact enough to be located in the machine tunnel. We do not require a magnet or any rigging, and at least the first results can be obtained with a polyethylene target. the data rate should be very high, and the information gained should be very informative on possible microstructure in the baryon mass spectrum, on the interaction properties of the Pomeron, and on the possible utility of the double-Ragge model and the Veneziano four-point function. A 28.5 GeV run of this experiment has been approved as experiment number 533 at the AGS, and will take place during October '70-May '71. That run will test all of the same apparatus needed for the NAL experiment
