Neutral Gauge Boson Contributions to the Dimuon Charge Asymmetry in B Decays
Recently, the D0 Collaboration measured the CP-violating like-sign dimuon
charge asymmetry in neutral B decays, finding a 3.2sigma difference from the
standard-model (SM) prediction. A non-SM charge asymmetry a_sl^s suggests a
new-physics (NP) contribution to Bs-Bsbar mixing. In this case, in order to
explain the measured value of a_sl^s within its 1sigma range, NP must be
present in Gamma_12^s, the absorptive part of the mixing. In this paper, we
examine whether such an explanation is possible in models with flavor-changing
Z (ZFCNC) or Z' (Z'FCNC) gauge bosons. The models must also reproduce the
measured values of the indirect CP asymmetry S_psi-phi in Bs -> J/psi phi, and
Delta Gamma_s, the Bs-Bsbar width difference. We find that the ZFCNC model
cannot reproduce the present measured values of S_psi-phi and a_sl^s within
their 1sigma ranges. On the other hand, in the Z'FCNC model, the values of all

Flavor SU(3) symmetry and QCD factorization in and decays
Using flavor SU(3) symmetry, we perform a model-independent analysis of
charmless decays. All the relevant
topological diagrams, including the presumably subleading diagrams, such as the
QCD- and EW-penguin exchange diagrams and flavor-singlet weak annihilation
ones, are introduced. Indeed, the QCD-penguin exchange diagram turns out to be
important in understanding the data for penguin-dominated decay modes. In this
work we make efforts to bridge the (model-independent but less quantitative)
topological diagram or flavor SU(3) approach and the (quantitative but somewhat
model-dependent) QCD factorization (QCDF) approach in these decays, by
explicitly showing how to translate each flavor SU(3) amplitude into the
corresponding terms in the QCDF framework. After estimating each flavor SU(3)
amplitude numerically using QCDF, we discuss various physical consequences,
including SU(3) breaking effects and some useful SU(3) relations among decay

Sponge city practice in China: a review of construction, assessment, operational and maintenance

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record As the global climate change and the rapid progress of urbanization, the frequent occurrence of flooding disasters and non-point source pollution seriously threaten the sustainable development of modern cities. To alleviate these problems, China started to pilot construction of the “Sponge City” (SPC). Over a decade, it has attracted public attention, supports, and participations. The paper presents a literature review of sponge city construction (SPCC) process (planning, design and construction) as well as the assessment of SPC, including: operation, maintenance, and effectiveness. Research gap and future works are also proposed. The paper offers some tactics for SPCC, including: 1) in the planning and construction stage of SPC, the goals and systematic plans should be formulated according to local water-environmental conditions the drainage plan should cover the strategy to dispose runoff volumes at sources and the ultimately goal for flood mitigation. The drainage design involves the combination of various green and grey infrastructures; 2) It is important to identify monitoring methods and hydrological models which can be used to assess the performance of a SPC. With adequate field data, all models and methods should be calibrated for not only runoff quantity and quality control but also the alleviation of urban heat island effects, including the base flows and local groundwater table; 3) Based on the regional field data, it is necessary to standardize regional design parameters, construction material specifics, and maintenance scheme and schedule that would significantly affect the facility’s infiltrating and filtering processes, therefore, a regular maintenance program should be initiated to monitor the operations of the as-built facilities according to local climate conditions. Coupled three-dimensional modelling of groundwater-surface water interactions for management of seawater intrusion in Pingtung Plain, Taiwan

A coupled framework, linking subsurface flow and surface hydrodynamics, is developed and applied to a real-world case study of Pingtung coastal aquifer in southwest of Taiwan, in East Asia.
Study focus
FEFLOW is adopted to develop a 3-D variable density and transient groundwater model of the Pingtung shallow aquifer lying 250 m below mean sea level (MSL). This model is coupled with a 1-D river network model, comprised of the main river and its two tributaries, using MIKE 11 through the IFM MIKE 11 coupling interface. The model is capable of analysing the relationship between rainfall, surface water and groundwater recharge lag time. Also, the analysis of potential river inundation and maximum river discharge enable the model to choose the best location to apply artificial recharge as a management scenario to mitigate the effect of seawater intrusion (SWI). To the authors’ knowledge, the developed coupled model is the first detailed integrated framework analysing the interaction of surface and subsurface water, with the capability to contribute to the restoration, rehabilitation, and management of the river network.

Production of α1,3-galactosyltransferase-deficient pigs
The enzyme α1,3-galactosyltransferase (α1,3GT or GGTA1) synthesizes α1,3galactose (α1,3Gal) epitopes (Galα1,3Galβ1,4GlcNAc-R), which are the major xenoantigens causing hyperacute rejection in pig-to-human xenotransplantation. Complete removal of α1,3Gal from pig organs is the critical step toward the success of xenotransplantation. We reported earlier the targeted disruption of one allele of the α1,3GT gene in cloned pigs. A selection procedure based on a bacteria[toxin was used to select for cells in which the second allele of the gene was knocked out. Sequencing analysis demonstrated that knockout of the second allele of the α1,3GT gene was caused by a T-to-G single point mutation at the second base of exon 9, which resulted in inactivation of the α1,3GT protein. Four healthy α1,3GT double-knockout female piglets were produced by three consecutive rounds of cloning. The piglets carrying a point mutation in the α1,3GT gene hold significant value, as they would allow production of α1,3Gal-deficient pigs free of antibiotic-resistance genes and thus have the potential to make a safer product for human use
The all-particle spectrum of primary cosmic rays in the wide energy range from 10^14 eV to 10^17 eV observed with the Tibet-III air-shower array
We present an updated all-particle energy spectrum of primary cosmic rays in
a wide range from 10^14 eV to 10^17 eV using 5.5 times 10^7 events collected in
the period from 2000 November through 2004 October by the Tibet-III air-shower
array located at 4300 m above sea level (atmospheric depth of 606 g/cm^2). The
size spectrum exhibits a sharp knee at a corresponding primary energy around 4
PeV. This work uses increased statistics and new simulation calculations for
the analysis. We performed extensive Monte Carlo calculations and discuss the
model dependences involved in the final result assuming interaction models of
QGSJET01c and SIBYLL2.1 and primary composition models of heavy dominant (HD)
and proton dominant (PD) ones. Pure proton and pure iron primary models are
also examined as extreme cases. The detector simulation was also made to
improve the accuracy of determining the size of the air showers and the energy
of the primary particle. We confirmed that the all-particle energy spectra
obtained under various plausible model parameters are not significantly
different from each other as expected from the characteristics of the
experiment at the high altitude, where the air showers of the primary energy
around the knee reaches near maximum development and their features are
dominated by electromagnetic components leading to the weak dependence on the
interaction model or the primary mass. This is the highest-statistical and the
best systematics-controlled measurement covering the widest energy range around

A False Start in the Race Against Doping in Sport: Concerns With Cycling’s Biological Passport
Professional cycling has suffered from a number of doping scandals. The sport’s governing bodies have responded by implementing an aggressive new antidoping program known as the biological passport. Cycling’s biological passport marks a departure from traditional antidoping efforts, which have focused on directly detecting prohibited substances in a cyclist’s system. Instead, the biological passport tracks biological variables in a cyclist’s blood and urine over time, monitoring for fluctuations that are thought to indirectly reveal the effects of doping. Although this method of indirect detection is promising, it also raises serious legal and scientific concerns. Since its introduction, the cycling community has debated the reliability of indirect biological-passport evidence and the clarity, consistency, and transparency of its use in proving doping violations. Such uncertainty undermines the legitimacy of finding cyclists guilty of doping based on this indirect evidence alone. Antidoping authorities should address these important concerns before continuing to pursue doping sanctions against cyclists solely on the basis of their biological passports
RNA editing signature during myeloid leukemia cell differentiation
Adenosine deaminases acting on RNA (ADARs) are key proteins for hematopoietic stem cell self-renewal and for survival of differentiating progenitor cells. However, their specific role in myeloid cell maturation has been poorly investigated. Here we show that ADAR1 is present at basal level in the primary myeloid leukemia cells obtained from patients at diagnosis as well as in myeloid U-937 and THP1 cell lines and its expression correlates with the editing levels. Upon phorbol-myristate acetate or Vitamin D3/granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF)-driven differentiation, both ADAR1 and ADAR2 enzymes are upregulated, with a concomitant global increase of A-to-I RNA editing. ADAR1 silencing caused an editing decrease at specific ADAR1 target genes, without, however, interfering with cell differentiation or with ADAR2 activity. Remarkably, ADAR2 is absent in the undifferentiated cell stage, due to its elimination through the ubiquitin–proteasome pathway, being strongly upregulated at the end of the differentiation process. Of note, peripheral blood monocytes display editing events at the selected targets similar to those found in differentiated cell lines. Taken together, the data indicate that ADAR enzymes play important and distinct roles in myeloid cells
