Graphic Communication in Architecture Competitions. Data Visualization as an Analysis Tool in EGA

[EN] The work presented below is part of the results of a research project developed at Polytechnic University of Madrid. The Architecture Competitions reveal the aspirations of the participants to present the most attractive proposal that will gain the attention of the jury, in addition to responding to the problems and motivations that originate the call. The graphic communication becomes the link between theviewer and the foreshadowing of something that could become a constructed project. By analysing the graphic instruments used in several calls for architectural competitions supervised by the COAM, the aim of this paper is to show the role of visual communication in reading and evaluating a proposal. The tool of the diagram allows to visualize and find the graphic variables most used by the competitors, as well as to specify which of them are drawn on the awarded projects.[ES] El artículo que se expone a continuación es parte del resultado de un trabajo de investigación realizado en la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Influence of Input/output Operations on Processor Performance

Nowadays, computers are frequently equipped with peripherals that transfer great amounts of data between them and the system memory using direct memory access techniques (i.e., digital cameras, high speed networks, . . . ). Those peripherals prevent the processor from accessing system memory for significant periods of time (i.e., while they are communicating with system memory in order to send or receive data blocks). In this paper we study the negative effects that I/O operations from computer peripherals have on processor performance. With the help of a set of routines (SMPL) used to make discrete event simulators, we have developed a configurable software that simulates a computer processor and main memory as well as the I/O scenarios where the periph-erals operate. This software has been used to analyze the performance of four different processors in four I/O scenarios: video capture, video capture and playback, high speed network, and serial transmission

A report on the wildlife remains recovered in Cut E (1983-1985) of the Peña Negra (Crevillente, Alicante)

The faunal analysis carried out on a previously selected sample from the assemblage recovered in Peña Negra (Late Bronze Age, Prov. Alicante) highlights all the weaknesses of a partial recovery of remains. Absence of unidentified specimens, abnormal abundance of complete bones and absence of bones below a critical size are evident in the sample studied. All of them force us to be suspicious as to the interpretation of the fauna which seems, nevertheless, dominated by domestic species, though, at the moment, (for the reasons given) we are unable to decide whether bovine or ovine husbandry was most important for the people at the site. The series of hypothesis which have been advanced in the present work will have to be substantiated through further research on the remaining fraction of this faunal assemblage. Rejection or adoption of these can only come through empirical testing with more reliable data than the ones presented here

A genetic algorithm for mobile robot localization using ultrasonic sensors

    Get PDF
A mobile robot requires the perception of its local environment for position estimation. Ultrasonic range data provide a robust description of the local environment for navigation. This article presents an ultrasonic sensor localization system for autonomous mobile robot navigation in an indoor semi-structured environment. The proposed algorithm is based upon an iterative non-linear filter, which utilizes matches between observed geometric beacons and an a-priori map of beacon locations, to correct the position and orientation of the vehicle. A non-linear filter based on a genetic algorithm as an emerging optimization method to search for optimal positions is described. The resulting self-localization module has been integrated successfully in a more complex navigation system. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in real world applications.Publicad

Analysis of channel utilization for controller area networks

In this paper, a model for the analysis of the CAN protocol is presented, extending the analysis already developed for fixed priority multiprocessors. Two cases are considered, which correspond to the main commercial devices. The model allows us to obtain some useful results for the design of CAN-based systems. The main conclusions are those regarding bus utilization, both total and per priority level. The results are validated using simulation. Finally, the real-time behavior is also briefly discussed.Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología TAP93-044

Road traffic sign detection and classification

    Get PDF
A vision-based vehicle guidance system for road vehicles can have three main roles: (1) road detection; (2) obstacle detection; and (3) sign recognition. The first two have been studied for many years and with many good results, but traffic sign recognition is a less-studied field. Traffic signs provide drivers with very valuable information about the road, in order to make driving safer and easier. The authors think that traffic signs most play the same role for autonomous vehicles. They are designed to be easily recognized by human drivers mainly because their color and shapes are very different from natural environments. The algorithm described in this paper takes advantage of these features. It has two main parts. The first one, for the detection, uses color thresholding to segment the image and shape analysis to detect the signs. The second one, for the classification, uses a neural network. Some results from natural scenes are shown.Publicad

Alimentos funcionales para cerdos al destete

A functional food is a compound that, being or not a nutrient, has a positive effect on one or several functions in the organism, producing well-being in the animal. The following compounds are considered functional foods: prebiotics, probiotics, symbiotics, antioxidants, secondary products of plant metabolism, structural lipids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, fat metabolism byproducts, bioactive peptides, fi ber, vitamins and minerals. Prebiotics, probiotics and symbiotics are modifi ers of the intestinal microfl ora increasing mainly lactobacilli and bifi dobacteria populations and reducing pathogenic bacteria. Lactobacilli and bifi - dobacteria use oligosaccharides and fructo-oligosaccharides arriving at the colon, producing fatty acids and freeing minerals to be absorbed and utilized by the host. Prebiotics are partially-digestible oligosaccharides; probiotics are microorganisms (mainly lactobacilli and bifi dobacteria); and symbiotics are a mixture of probiotics and prebiotics. During the weaning period, piglets face dramatic changes in feeding management and environment, affecting feed intake and, at the same time, affecting digestive functions resulting in lower growth and higher incidence of disease, mainly diarrhea. Functional food may be an alternative to reduce the effects of weaning on growth performance and health of piglets, to diminish or to avoid gastrointestinal problems during weaning, preventing the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria, and improving digestive functions. All these may help to withdraw antibiotics from piglet feed

Analysis of the human interaction with a wearable lower-limb exoskeleton

    Get PDF
The design of a wearable robotic exoskeleton needs to consider the interaction, either physical or cognitive, between the human user and the robotic device. This paper presents a method to analyse the interaction between the human user and a unilateral, wearable lower-limb exoskeleton. The lower-limb exoskeleton function was to compensate for muscle weakness around the knee joint. It is shown that the cognitive interaction is bidirectional; on the one hand, the robot gathered information from the sensors in order to detect human actions, such as the gait phases, but the subjects also modified their gait patterns to obtain the desired responses from the exoskeleton. The results of the two-phase evaluation of learning with healthy subjects and experiments with a patient case are presented, regarding the analysis of the interaction, assessed in terms of kinematics, kinetics and/or muscle recruitment. Human-driven response of the exoskeleton after training revealed the improvements in the use of the device, while particular modifications of motion patterns were observed in healthy subjects. Also, endurance (mechanical) tests provided criteria to perform experiments with one post-polio patient. The results with the post-polio patient demonstrate the feasibility of providing gait compensation by means of the presented wearable exoskeleton, designed with a testing procedure that involves the human users to assess the human-robot interaction
