    Groundwater Arsenic Contamination in Semi-Urban Areas of Tando Muhammad Khan District: A Case Study from Deltaic Flood Plain of Sindh, Pakistan

    An attempt has been made to assess the arsenic contamination and role of anthropogenic activities on its release in the groundwater of alluvial aquifers occurring on deltaic flood plain of Indus River. Groundwater collected from three semi-urban union councils of Tando Muhammad Khan district revealed that the groundwater has bad quality for drinking which varied in the order of UC-2 > UC-1 > UC-3. Anoxia is prevalent in the aquifers of study area which is indicated by high HCO3 and lowNO3 and Fe contents. However, the natural concentration of sulphate (Mean range: 105-450 mg/L) in the groundwater of study area suggested that anoxia has not reached the stage where sulphate is consumed by SO4 reducing bacteria for organic matter decomposition. On the other hand elevated content of Na and Cl coupled with pathogenic bacteria occurrence indicated that sewage mixing is common in the study area. Elevated arsenic is reported from all there union councils which varied inthe order of UC2 > UC 1 > UC3. Arsenic is mobilized from host sediments (clays/biotite) due to the prevalence of reduced environment caused by organic matter decomposition and triggered by sewagemixing

    The Role of Gender and Personality Traits in Using Lexical Cohesion Devices in Oral Interactions

    In this paper, we studied lexical cohesion devices to define the role of gender and personality traits on using them in the speeches of the second grade students in elementary school. We have used survey method in questionnaire part and descriptive analysis in analyzing the obtained data. The number of students in our statical sample was 100, which was divided into 4 groups (each group was 25 students) according to gender and personality variables. The sample was chosen by cluster random sampling method. The students were divided into introverted and extroverted groups by the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). In order to collect data, the researches took part in classrooms during the school year, and recorded the students’ voices.  Then their voices were transcribed to extract the used lexical cohesion. In data analysis, we used Wilcoxon math-pairs and Man Whitney U test according to the type of samples. The main purpose of this paper was to come to this conclusion that a general and bipolar judgment about the role of gender and personality traits in the studies of speech, especially in the study of using cohesion devices in discourses, is not true. So, this study, hesitated the general outcomes of some researches such as Hall who believed introverted students have more progress than extroverted in school, and Premuzic& Furham who believed extroverted students are more successful than introverted in class activities.     Factors influencing severity in acute ischemic strokes

    Background: Stroke severity is one of the factors that determines stroke related disability. We explored possible associations between stroke severity and commonly evaluated clinical parameters of stroke patients. Objective: To determine the relationships between clinical features including routine in- hospital investigations done in first 24 hours of admission and variations in the stroke severity. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective, analytical study performed in the Department of Neurology at Shifa International Hospital, Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University, Islamabad, Pakistan. Adult patients admitted with ischemic stroke, over a period of 39 months, with Middle Cerebral Artery infarctions, were included. National Institute of Heath Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score was taken as a measure of stroke severity. The pertinent information was filled in a predesigned data sheet, and analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Results: A total of 207 patients were included in the study. The highest stroke severity was found in old age ([\u3e64 years]), and patients with cardio embolic and unclassified (\u3e one etiology) strokes, while the lowest severity was found in small artery occlusion strokes. Higher fasting serum triglyceride levels were associated with lower stroke severity and vice versa ([P=.002]). Among supra aortic large artery atherosclerosis the pre-stroke anti-platelet ([52 %]) and beta blocker use ([53.6 %]) was significantly associated with lower stroke severity. In cardio embolic strokes active smoking was associated with increased severity ([90%]). Conclusion: Stroke severity is not only related to stroke etiology, but also, age, fasting serum triglyceride levels, active smoking and pre-stroke medications may also play significant roles. Nevertheless, further studies are required with prospective design, to confirm our findings

    SILICA NANOPARTICLE FORMATION BY USING DROPLET-BASED MICROREACTOR

    This paper describes a method for the synthesis of silica nanoparticles that can be later used for coating of quantum dots inside a microfluidic reactor. Here, a droplet-based system is used where two reagents were mixed inside the droplets to obtain silica. Particles in the size range of 25 +/- 2.7 nm were obtained with comparable size distribution to controlled batch wise synthesis methods. This method is suitable to be used later to coat CdSe nanoparticles inside the microreactor

    Too many shades of grey : photometrically and spectrally mismatched targets and backgrounds in printed acuity tests for infants and young children

    Purpose: Acuity tests for infants and young children use preferential looking methods that require a perceptual match of brightness and color between grey background and target spatial average. As a first step in exploring this matching, this article measures photometric and colorimetric matches in these acuity tests. Methods: The luminance, uniformity, contrast, and color spectra of Teller Acuity Cards, Keeler Acuity Cards for Infants, and Lea Paddles under ambient, warm, and cold lighting, and of grey-emulating patterns on four digital displays, were measured. Five normal adults’ acuities were tested at 10 m observationally. Results: Luminance and spectral mismatches between target and background were found for the printed tests (Weber contrasts of 0.3% [Teller Acuity Cards], −1.7% [Keeler Acuity Cards for Infants], and −26% [Lea Paddles]). Lighting condition had little effect on contrast, and all printed tests and digital displays met established adult test luminance and uniformity standards. Digital display grey backgrounds had very similar luminance and color whether generated by a checkerboard, vertical grating, or horizontal grating. Improbably good psychophysical acuities (better than −0.300 logMAR: (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution)) were recorded from adults using the printed tests at 10 m, but not using the digital test Peekaboo Vision. Conclusions: Perceptible contrast between target and background could lead to an incorrectly measured, excessively good acuity. It is not clear whether the luminance and spectral contrasts described here have clinically meaningful consequences for the target patient group, but they may be avoidable using digital tests. Translational Relevance: Current clinical infant acuity tests present photometric mismatches that may return inaccurate testing results

    Evaluation of Antibacterial Potential of Artemisinin Extracts of Artemisia Annua In Vivo and In Vitro

    To ensure universal health care, the World Health Organization recognized the significance of complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) and recommended the use of natural herbs and plants bearing therapeutic potential and fewer adverse effects. Therefore, Artemisia annua herb was evaluated for its antibacterial potential and therapeutic efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus and Escherichia coli both in vitro and in vivo. Artemisinin was extracted from Artemisia annua by chemical treatment. Subsequently, the culture sensitivity tests were performed on MHA by disk diffusion method to determine the antibacterial potential of the Artemisinin extracts against the test bacteria (in vitro phase). The results of this in vitro trial revealed that the test bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus were significantly sensitive to Artemisinin extracts and showed a diameter of 27.7 and 22.3 mm of the bacteriostatic zone, respectively, while the Escherichia coli was moderately sensitive to the Artemisinin extracts with the bacteriostatic zone of 12.9mm. During the 2nd phase of the study (in vivo trial), 20 rabbits were maintained which were infected with S. aureus and were successfully treated with varying concentrations of the Artemisinin extracts @ 1 mg/ml, 2 mg/ml and 5 mg/ml in DMSO and were recovered. Similarly, rabbits infected with Streptococcus were also successfully treated and recovered. Thereafter, rabbits infected with E. coli were treated with Artemisinin, and out of 15 rabbits in three test groups, 03 rabbits died while the others were recovered. Hence, as per findings of this study, Artemisinin extracts were recommended against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus infections

    Epidemiological Survey of Bovine Babesia and Theileria Parasites in Buffaloes in District Dera Ismail, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

    Piroplasmosis (babesiosis and theileriosis) are the leading blood parasites responsible for significant economic losses to the dairy enterprises. These parasites are transmitted by Ixodid ticks from a diseased animal to a healthy animal. This study was executed to determine the prevalence of Theileria and Babesia in water buffaloes in District Dera Ismail Khan for their risk assessment. During this trial, 350 random blood samples were obtained from buffalos within the region of District Dera Ismail Khan and examined for Babesia and Theileria parasites using Giemsa staining technique under an oil immersion lens. Forty-eight blood samples were found positive and the prevalence of Babesiosis was 7.43 %, followed by the prevalence of Theileriosis (6.28 %). Babesiosis had a significantly higher (p \u3c 0.05) prevalence among both males and females (6.9 % and 7.7 %, respectively) followed by Theileria (5.38 % and 6.8 %, respectively). The significantly highest (p \u3c 0.05) prevalence of Theileria was seen in calves younger than 2 years (16.7 %). Babesiosis was most prevalent (p \u3c 0.05) in calves aged 2 to 5 (11.7 %). The Kundhi buffalo breed had the highest (p \u3c 0.05) prevalence of babesiosis, followed by the Nili Ravi breed, while, the Nili Ravi breed had the highest frequency (p \u3c 0.05)of Theileria. Piroplasmosis prevalence significantly (p \u3c 0.05) peaked in the summer season. Piroplasmosisis the major risk factor in endangering the general health of the buffalo’s population, therefore, stringent control measures are recommended for the management of the tick population

    Exploring High Aspect Ratio Gold Nanotubes as Cytosolic Agents: Structural Engineering and Uptake into Mesothelioma Cells.

    The generation of effective and safe nanoagents for biological applications requires their physicochemical characteristics to be tunable, and their cellular interactions to be well characterized. Here, the controlled synthesis is developed for preparing high-aspect ratio gold nanotubes (AuNTs) with tailorable wall thickness, microstructure, composition, and optical characteristics. The modulation of optical properties generates AuNTs with strong near infrared absorption. Surface modification enhances dispersibility of AuNTs in aqueous media and results in low cytotoxicity. The uptake and trafficking of these AuNTs by primary mesothelioma cells demonstrate their accumulation in a perinuclear distribution where they are confined initially in membrane-bound vesicles from which they ultimately escape to the cytosol. This represents the first study of the cellular interactions of high-aspect ratio 1D metal nanomaterials and will facilitate the rational design of plasmonic nanoconstructs as cytosolic nanoagents for potential diagnosis and therapeutic applications.BLF-Papworth Fellowship from the British Lung Foundation and the Victor Dahdaleh Foundation
