    Optimal Pricing Is Hard

    We show that computing the revenue-optimal deterministic auction in unit-demand single-buyer Bayesian settings, i.e. the optimal item-pricing, is computationally hard even in single-item settings where the buyer’s value distribution is a sum of independently distributed attributes, or multi-item settings where the buyer’s values for the items are independent. We also show that it is intractable to optimally price the grand bundle of multiple items for an additive bidder whose values for the items are independent. These difficulties stem from implicit definitions of a value distribution. We provide three instances of how different properties of implicit distributions can lead to intractability: the first is a #P-hardness proof, while the remaining two are reductions from the SQRT-SUM problem of Garey, Graham, and Johnson [14]. While simple pricing schemes can oftentimes approximate the best scheme in revenue, they can have drastically different underlying structure. We argue therefore that either the specification of the input distribution must be highly restricted in format, or it is necessary for the goal to be mere approximation to the optimal scheme’s revenue instead of computing properties of the scheme itself.Microsoft Research (Fellowship)Alfred P.     Nonperturbative hyperfine contribution to the b1b_1 and h1h_1 meson masses

    Due to the nonperturbative contribution to the hyperfine splitting the mass of the n1P1n^1P_1 state is strongly correlated with the center of gravity Mcog(n3PJ)M_{\rm cog}(n^3P_J) of the n3PJn^3P_J multiplet: M(n1P1)M(n^1P_1) is less than Mcog(n3PJ)M_{\rm cog}(n^3P_J) by about 40 MeV (20 MeV) for the 1P (2P) state. For b1(1235)b_1(1235) the agreement with experiment is reached only if a0(980)a_0(980) belongs to the 13PJ1^3P_J multiplet. The predicted mass of b1(21P1)b_1(2^1P_1) is 1620\approx 1620 MeV. For the isoscalar meson a correlation between the mass of h1h_1(1170) (h1(1380))(h_1(1380)) and Mcog(13PJ)M_{cog}(1^3P_J) composed from light (strange) quarks also takes place.Comment: 22 pages RevTe

    Long-Term Benefit-Risk Profiles of Treatments for Moderate-to-Severe Plaque Psoriasis : A Network Meta-Analysis

    Altres ajuts: AbbVie Inc.Introduction: The long-term benefit-risk profiles of licensed and investigational treatments for moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis have not been fully characterized. Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of licensed and investigational treatments for moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis were identified through a systematic literature review through 2 May 2021. Bayesian network meta-analyses (NMAs) were conducted to compare the efficacy (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index [PASI] 75/90/100 [at least a 75/90/100% reduction in PASI score from baseline] response) and safety outcomes (any adverse event [AE], any serious AE [SAE], and AEs leading to treatment discontinuation) of each treatment evaluated between weeks 48 and 56 after baseline. Surfaces under the cumulative ranking curves (SUCRAs) were calculated to evaluate the relative ranking of treatments. The benefit-risk profiles of treatments were assessed by bidimensional plots of the NMA-estimated efficacy and safety outcomes. Results: In the efficacy NMA (N = 14 RCTs), the relative rankings for PASI 75/90/100 responses by weeks 48-56 were the highest for risankizumab (SUCRA: 98.5%) and bimekizumab (83.8% for dosing every 4 weeks [Q4W], 72.7% for dosing Q4W then every 8 weeks). The PASI response rates did not differ significantly between risankizumab and the two bimekizumab regimens. Additionally, risankizumab was associated with significantly higher PASI response rates than brodalumab, guselkumab, ixekizumab, secukinumab, ustekinumab, adalimumab, and etanercept. In the safety NMAs (N = 8 RCTs), risankizumab had the highest relative rankings for all three outcomes (SUCRA: 92.1%, 82.0%, and 91.0% for any AE, any SAE, and AEs leading to treatment discontinuation, respectively). Risankizumab had a significantly lower rate of any AE than bimekizumab, ustekinumab, and secukinumab. Conclusions: Risankizumab was associated with the most favorable long-term benefit-risk profile for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. Although ixekizumab and bimekizumab had favorable efficacy profiles, both treatments had lower rankings for safety outcomes

    Masses of the \eta_c(nS) and \eta_b(nS) mesons

    The hyperfine splittings in heavy quarkonia are studied using new experimental data on the di-electron widths. The smearing of the spin-spin interaction is taken into account, while the radius of smearing is fixed by the known J/ψηc(1S)J/\psi-\eta_c(1S) and ψ(2S)ηc(2S)\psi(2S)-\eta'_c(2S) splittings and appears to be small, rss0.06r_{ss} \approx 0.06 fm. Nevertheless, even with such a small radius an essential suppression of the hyperfine splittings (50\sim 50%) is observed in bottomonium. For the nSbbˉnS b\bar b states (n=1,2,...6)(n=1,2,...6) the values we predict (in MeV) are 28, 12, 10, 6, 6, and 3, respectively. In single-channel approximation for the 3S3S and 4S4S charmonium states the splittings 16(2) MeV and 12(4) MeV are obtained.Comment: 13 pages, no figure

    Hydrogen activation by [NiFe]-hydrogenases

    Hydrogenase-1 (Hyd-1) from Escherichia coli is a membrane-bound enzyme that catalyses the reversible oxidation of molecular H2 The active site contains one Fe and one Ni atom and several conserved amino acids including an arginine (Arg(509)), which interacts with two conserved aspartate residues (Asp(118) and Asp(574)) forming an outer shell canopy over the metals. There is also a highly conserved glutamate (Glu(28)) positioned on the opposite side of the active site to the canopy. The mechanism of hydrogen activation has been dissected by site-directed mutagenesis to identify the catalytic base responsible for splitting molecular hydrogen and possible proton transfer pathways to/from the active site. Previous reported attempts to mutate residues in the canopy were unsuccessful, leading to an assumption of a purely structural role. Recent discoveries, however, suggest a catalytic requirement, for example replacing the arginine with lysine (R509K) leaves the structure virtually unchanged, but catalytic activity falls by more than 100-fold. Variants containing amino acid substitutions at either or both, aspartates retain significant activity. We now propose a new mechanism: heterolytic H2 cleavage is via a mechanism akin to that of a frustrated Lewis pair (FLP), where H2 is polarized by simultaneous binding to the metal(s) (the acid) and a nitrogen from Arg(509) (the base)

    AbstractUridine phosphorylase from E. coli (Upase) has been crystallized using vapor diffusion technique in a new monoclinic crystal form. The structure was determined by the molecular replacement method at 2.5 Å resolution. The coordinates of the trigonal crystal form were used as a starting model and the refinement by the program XPLOR led to the R-factor of 18.6%. The amino acid fold of the protein was found to be the same as that in the trigonal crystals. The positions of flexible regions were refined. The conclusion about the involvement in the active site is in good agreement with the results of the biochemical experiments

    Dispersive properties of quasi-phase-matched optical parametric amplifiers

    The dispersive properties of non-degenerate optical parametric amplification in quasi-phase-matched (QPM) nonlinear quadratic crystals with an arbitrary grating profile are theoretically investigated in the no-pump-depletion limit. The spectral group delay curve of the amplifier is shown to be univocally determined by its spectral power gain curve through a Hilbert transform. Such a constraint has important implications on the propagation of spectrally-narrow optical pulses through the amplifier. In particular, it is shown that anomalous transit times, corresponding to superluminal or even negative group velocities, are possible near local minima of the spectral gain curve. A possible experimental observation of such effects using a QPM Lithium-Niobate crystal is suggested.Comment: submitted for publicatio

    Thermal rates for baryon and anti-baryon production

    We use a form of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem to derive formulas giving the rate of production of spin-1/2 baryons in terms of the fluctuations of either meson or quark fields. The most general formulas do not assume thermal or chemical equilibrium.     Observation of Pseudoscalar and Axial Vector Resonances in pi- p -> K+ K- pi0 n at 18 GeV

    A new measurement of the reaction pi- p -> K+ K- pi0 n has been made at a beam energy of 18 GeV. A partial wave analysis of the K+ K- pi0 system shows evidence for three pseudoscalar resonances, eta(1295), eta(1416), and eta(1485), as well as two axial vectors, f1(1285), and f1(1420). Their observed masses, widths and decay properties are reported. No signal was observed for C(1480), an IG J{PC} = 1+ 1{--} state previously reported in phi pi0 decay.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figs, to be submitted to Phys. Let
