    Oxidation processes in magneto-optic and related materials

    The surface oxidation processes of thin films of magneto-optic materials, such as the rare-earth transition metal alloys have been studied, starting in ultrahigh vacuum environments, using surface analysis techniques, as a way of modeling the oxidation processes which occur at the base of a defect in an overcoated material, at the instant of exposure to ambient environments. Materials examined have included FeTbCo alloys, as well as those same materials with low percentages of added elements, such a Ta, and their reactivities to both O2 and H2O compared with materials such as thin Fe films coated with ultrathin adlayers of Ti. The surface oxidation pathways for these materials is reviewed, and XPS data presented which indicates the type of oxides formed, and a critical region of Ta concentration which provides optimum protection

    Cruise Report for cruise Kilo Moana KM1811 in the U.S. Gulf of Alaska continental margin

    Cruise report of RV Kilo Moana cruise 1811 on the U.S. margin in the Gulf of Alaska, north Pacific Ocean. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), on behalf of the United States Government, has a requirement to carry out mapping surveys of specific regions on the margins in the Gulf of Alaska, north Pacific Ocean in order to determine the detailed bathymetry of the margins. The data are required to support any potential claim for extended jurisdiction by the United States under United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) Article 76. The requirement is for the collection and processing of full-coverage multibeam sonar data in water depths of approximately 1000 to 5500 m in order to precisely define the location of potential natural prolongations to the continent as defined under UNCLOS Article 76. As part of the NOAA-funded research program, University of Hawaii researchers oversaw data acquisition, and University of New Hampshire (UNH) researchers performed the cruise planning and oversaw processing and archiving of the data collected during the cruise. A full patch test was conducted in deep water in the immediate area prior to commencement of mapping. New sound-speed profiles were collected by 139 XBT casts whenever the sound speed at the transducer differed by more than 0.5 m/s. All soundings are within 0.5% (2 sigma) of water depth, based on cross-line checks. Positions were determined by corrected differential GPS-aided inertial navigation. Sound-speed profiles were calculated from an XBT cast calibrated to an XSV cast during a patch test performed on the cruise prior to data collection. Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Horizontal positioning of the vessel was determined using Applanix POS/MV inertial motion unit (IMU) version 5 which was provided with wide-area satellite-based differential positioning using the built-in Fugro Marinestar service as well as GNSS G2 service. Positioning is accurate to better than 0.5 meters (at 95% confidence) during all surveying. All positioning is referenced to the WGS84 Datum.     Survey on demand side sensitivity to power quality in Ireland

    Power systems require a reliable supply and good power quality. The impact of power supply interruptions is well acknowledged and well quantified. However, a system may perform reliably without any interruptions but may have poor power quality. Although poor power quality has cost implications for all actors in the electrical power systems, only some users are aware of its impact. Power system operators are much attuned to the impact of low power quality on their equipment and have the appropriate monitoring systems in place. However, over recent years certain industries have come increasingly vulnerable to negative cost implications of poor power quality arising from changes in their load characteristics and load sensitivities, and therefore increasingly implement power quality monitoring and mitigation solutions. This paper reviews several historical studies which investigate the cost implications of poor power quality on industry. These surveys are largely focused on outages, whilst the impact of poor power quality such as harmonics, short interruptions, voltage dips and swells, and transients is less well studied and understood. This paper examines the difficulties in quantifying the costs of poor power quality, and uses the chi-squared method to determine the consequences for industry of power quality phenomenon using a case study of over 40 manufacturing and data centres in Ireland

    Renal function and the effects of vericiguat in patients with worsening heart failure with reduced ejection fraction : insights from the VICTORIA (Vericiguat Global Study in Subjects with HFrEF) trial

    Aims Vericiguat reduced the primary composite outcome of cardiovascular death or heart failure (HF) hospitalization in patients with worsening HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and a lower limit of baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 15 mL/min/1.73 m(2). We evaluated the relationship between the efficacy of vericiguat and baseline and subsequent changes in renal function. Methods and results In VICTORIA, core laboratory serum creatinine was measured at baseline (n = 4956) and weeks 16, 32, and 48. Worsening renal function (WRF), defined as an increase >= 0.3 mg/dL in creatinine from baseline to week 16, was assessed via a Cox model with respect to subsequent primary events. Mean age was 69 years, 24% were female, and mean baseline eGFR was 61 mL/min/1.73 m(2). During 48 weeks of treatment, the trajectories in eGFR and creatinine with vericiguat were similar to placebo (P = 0.50 and 0.18). The beneficial effects of vericiguat on the primary outcome were not influenced by baseline eGFR (interaction P = 0.48). WRF occurred in 15% of patients and was associated with worse outcomes (adjusted hazard ratio 1.28, 95% confidence interval 1.11-1.47; P < 0.001), but the beneficial effects of vericiguat on the primary outcome were similar in patients with or without WRF (interaction P = 0.76). Conclusion Renal function trajectories were similar between vericiguat- and placebo-treated patients and the beneficial effects of vericiguat on the primary outcome were consistent across the full range of eGFR and irrespective of WRF.Peer reviewe

    Epidemiology of Contemporary Seroincident HIV Infection in the Navy and Marine Corps

    Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection continues at a steady rate among U.S. Sailors and Marines. This study provides the first service-specific description of HIV infection demographics. All Sailors and Marines identified as HIV infected between January 2005 and August 2010 were included. The project compared personnel and epidemiologic data, and tested reposed sera in the Department of Defense Serum Repository. This group comprised 410 Sailors and 86 Marines, predominantly men. HIV infected Marines were more likely to be foreign born than their Navy counterparts, 42% versus 10%, p \u3c 0.001. Approximately half of the patients had deployed including to the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan. Nearly half of each group was infected by the age of 25. Similar to the U.S. epidemic, Black race was over-represented. Unlike national rates, Hispanic Sailors and Marines were not over-represented. Demographics were distinct for those of specific occupational specialties. Certain ship classes carried lower incidences. Clustering of HIV infection risk occurred around deployment. The Navy and Marine Corps have different patterns of HIV infection, which may merit distinct approaches to prevention. The Navy may have unique targets for prevention efforts to include pipeline training and first assignment as well as particular occupational environments

    Development of an ALK2-Biased BMP Type I Receptor Kinase Inhibitor

    The bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling pathway has essential functions in development, homeostasis, and the normal and pathophysiologic remodeling of tissues. Small molecule inhibitors of the BMP receptor kinase family have been useful for probing physiologic functions of BMP signaling in vitro and in vivo and may have roles in the treatment of BMP-mediated diseases. Here we describe the development of a selective and potent inhibitor of the BMP type I receptor kinases, LDN-212854, which in contrast to previously described BMP receptor kinase inhibitors exhibits nearly 4 orders of selectivity for BMP versus the closely related TGF-? and Activin type I receptors. In vitro, LDN-212854 exhibits some selectivity for ALK2 in preference to other BMP type I receptors, ALK1 and ALK3, which may permit the interrogation of ALK2-mediated signaling, transcriptional activity, and function. LDN-212854 potently inhibits heterotopic ossification in an inducible transgenic mutant ALK2 mouse model of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. These findings represent a significant step toward developing selective inhibitors targeting individual members of the highly homologous BMP type I receptor family. Such inhibitors would provide greater resolution as probes of physiologic function and improved selectivity against therapeutic targets

    Plaque excision with the Silverhawk catheter: Early results in patients with claudication or critical limb ischemia

    ObjectiveThis study was conducted to detail the early experience after infrainguinal atherectomy using the Silverhawk plaque excision catheter for the treatment of symptomatic peripheral vascular disease.MethodsA prospective database was established in August 2004 in which data for operations, outcomes, and follow-up were recorded for patients undergoing percutaneous plaque excision for peripheral arterial occlusive disease. Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) ischemia scores and femoropopliteal TransAtlantic Inter-Society Consensus (TASC) criteria were assigned. A follow-up protocol included duplex ultrasound surveillance at 1, 3, and 6 months and then yearly thereafter. Standard statistical analyses were performed.ResultsDuring a 17-month period, 66 limbs of 60 patients (37 men [61.7%]) underwent 70 plaque excisions (four repeat procedures). Indications included tissue loss based on SVS ischemia at grades 5 and 6 (25/70), rest pain at grade 4 (22/70), and claudication at grades 2 to 3 (23/70). The mean lesion length was 8.8 ± 0.7 cm. The technical success rate was 87.1% (61/70). Adjunctive treatment was required in 17 procedures (24.3%), consisting of 14 balloon angioplasties and three stents. Femoropopliteal TASC criteria included 5 TASC A lesions, 14 TASC B lesions, 32 TASC C lesions, and 19 TASC D lesions. Although 17 plaque excisions included a tibial vessel, no patient underwent isolated tibial atherectomy. The mean increase in ankle-brachial index was 0.27 ± 0.04 and in toe pressure, 20.3 ± 6.9 mm Hg. Mean duplex ultrasound follow-up was 5.2 months (range, 1 to 17 months). One-year primary, primary assisted, and secondary patency was 61.7%, 64.1%, and 76.4%, respectively. Restenosis or occlusion developed in 12 patients (16.7%) and was detected at a mean of 2.8 ± 0.7 months. Restenosis or occlusion was significantly more common (P < .05) in patients with TASC C and D lesions compared with patients with TASC A and B lesions. Six (8.3%) of 12 patients underwent reintervention on the basis of duplex ultrasound surveillance results. Four (33.3%) of 12 patients experienced reocclusion during the same hospitalization, and amputation and open revascularization were required in two patients each.ConclusionsPercutaneous plaque excision is a viable treatment option for lower extremity revascularization. Outcomes are related to ischemia and lesion severity. Patency and limb salvage rates are equivalent to other endovascular modalities
