Bibliography: leaves 45-48.This study aims at exploring the professional experiences of black psychologists as victims of racism and in view of the profession's association with racist ideological practices. The review of the literature revealed that little research has been done in this area. An historical overview of the significant influences which shaped the professionalisation of South African psychology serves as background to the study. It is demonstrated with respect to historical background, that the profession had strong links with the implementation and maintenance of Apartheid policies. This development is followed through to a description of the recent controversy which has culminated into the formation of two alternative tendencies in the profession. The interview method was used to collect data and twenty registered black psychologists in the Western Cape area were approached to participate in the study. The findings are presented with respect to personal background and in the various categories of professional training

Real-Time Battery Energy Storage Scheduling for an Educational Building

Special electricity rates are oļ¬€ered by some utilities to incentivize certain energy consumption behaviors in an attempt to garner a cost eļ¬€ective demand proļ¬le to service. One area of concern for a utility is the maximum demand of a building during the times of day when electricity usage is typically at its peak. Regulated utilities are required to have the capacity to meet the electrical demand of customers, though, the peak demand of customers can oftentimes be relatively brief. Therefore, it is not cost eļ¬€ective for a utility to have generation units online to only cover momentary peak demands. Electricity provider Dominion Energy oļ¬€ers a time-of-use demand and energy rate structure, Rate 21A, that is available to buildings such as the Zucker Graduate Education Center (ZGEC). The ZGEC is a two-story educational building located on the Clemson University Restoration Institute (CURI) campus in Charleston, SC. The purpose of this project is to implement a battery energy storage system (BESS) scheduler for demand-side management of the ZGEC which has attached to it a 50 kW, 96 kWh battery. There are three components of the demand management algorithm that are investigated for the real-time implementation:1. Demand Data Collection 2. Building Load Forecaster 3. BESS Scheduler Demand data collection is done using a database management system developed in MATLAB 2019b capable of reading power meters that communicate using Modbus. By design, only three types of power meters are compatible: PowerLogic Series 800 (PM800), PSL PQube 3, EIG Shark 100. Load forecasting and BESS scheduling are done by a Simulink model, developed in MATLAB 2020b, that operates in Real-Time Normal Mode. A time series forecasting model provides 24 hours of ZGEC demand predictions to a BESS scheduler which uses Model Predictive Control (MPC). Currently, the ZGEC is subjected to a standard energy charge rate structure, Rate 9. Cost comparisons are provided for switching to Rate 21A as well as for implementing the developed forecaster and BESS scheduler

Includes abstract.|Includes bibliographical references (leaves 94-99).This study investigates students' perceptions of their learning experiences at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) as well as their perceptions of their previous high school learning experiences. Eight first time entering Black township-schooled foundation Civil Engineering students were interviewed. The students indicated that they had difficulties with the medium of instruction, English. It also appears that certain teaching and learning practices at school do not prepare students for study at a tertiary institution. Social factors, such as transport and residence issues, were also named as issues influencing students' learning. An important focus of the study was on students' perceptions of group work, since the study took place during a period in which a group work intervention was conducted in the class from which the eight participants were selected. Seven of the eight participating students in the study made use of some form of group work at high school. The students had a positive disposition towards group work at school and towards the group work intervention programme at CPUT. They also had particular views of what group work is. The study also claims that students benefited from group work and that group work had a positive effect on students' performances in Mathematics. This study advocates for and contributes to a theoretical perspective on student communities, an aspect of the community perspective (Allie et al., 2007) on student learning. Group work as a form of participation that was investigated in this study was beneficial in student learning. Thus the theoretical perspective for the study, student communities, is appropriate. The study makes a contribution to the existing theoretical perspective in that it provides some insight into the school communities from which students entering higher education come; it suggests what classroom communities at tertiary level might look like; and it argues for the importance of the development of student communities outside the classroom

As the student of SMA Negeri 1 Makassar though of swear words, they truly realized that it is prohibited to express, in certain time and condition. In other cases, they as the student oftentimes express it in their daily conversation. The researcher isinterested indiscussingthe utterances which contain swear words on the student of SMA Negeri 1 Makassar as one ofspeech communityin Makassar. This research aims todetermine the category and to find outthe intended meaningof the swear words they express. The researcherusesthe descriptive qualitative method to describe the mentionedscope of the problem abovebecause this research has the primary data in the form of utterances that contains swear words which provides rich description about its meaning and category. The approach of this research uses pragmaticsfor the analysis of the context and SPEAKING factors to assist pragmatics in describing the context and find the intended meaning. As the results, the researcher found that the categories of expressed swearing words in this research are 1. Oneā€™s Mother in Law (Sundala; Bitch); 2. Certain Game or Animal (Tolo; Bangsat; Goblok/Geblek; Anjing/Anjay/Anjir; Damn; Asu); 3. Sex/Copulative Term (Fuck); 4. Death (Setan); and 5. Excretion (Tai; Telaso; Shit). The intended meaning of swearing words which expressed by the student of SMA Negeri 1 Makassar is mostly based on its connotative meaning, as the expression of startled and anger. Thus, the intended meaning of the expressions are as the normal response of what is being happened, for casual conversation

    FACE OBSERVANCE IN TWITTER CONVERSATIONS

This research entitled Face Observance in Twitter Conversations is aimed at investigating the politeness strategies used by the speakers in observing and non-observing their hearersā€™ face in Twitter conversations, the response given by the hearers, and the effects which may be resulted from (non) observance. This study employs a descriptive qualitative study. The data are taken from conversations made in Twitter. This study shows that the four types of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) namely, bald-on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record are used by the speakers in observing and non-observing their hearersā€™ negative and positive face. The hearersā€™ response to the (non) observance done by the speakers by using different strategies may produce some effects to the conversation itself. The result shows that there are two kinds of effects resulted from (non) observance done by the speakers. The first effect is that the conversation goes well without any distraction while the second one is that the conversation is distracted or even stopped. It is suggested that positive politeness strategy seems to be the preferred choice taken by the participants in maintaining a conversation

The intention of agricultural students to carry out agricultural business is an important thing as a locomotive for the development of agricultural human resources in the future. However, the evaluation of the instrument of Intention to carry out a validated agricultural business is still lacking. This study aims to test and develop a valid and reliable instrument of intention to carry out agricultural business and to determine the level of intention to do agricultural business among students. This research method uses a survey approach whichĀ (where the population of this study was 1200 students of the faculty of agriculture in Riau Province, while the sample of this study was 98 respondents.Data analysis to test the validity and reliability using the Rasch modeling test with Winstep.Ā The results of the analysis show that from testing 17 instrument items, which consist of; (a) 5 items instrument attitude, 4 items have good goodfit, while 1 item no 2 is misfit. (b) 4 item instrument subjective norm, where 3 items have good parameters, while 1 item no 9 is misfit, (c) 4 Perceive behavior control instrument items, where 3 items have good parameters, while 1 item no 13 is misfit, (d) 4 instrument intention items, where all items have good parameters or good fit. This value indicates a very good consistency of respondents answers, as well as the quality of the instrument items. For the rating scale test, it was found that respondents were only good enough at distinguishing the rating scale when the scale was from 1 to 4.Ā Based on these findings, it is suggested that in measuring student intentions to do entrepreneurship with the planned behavior theory, it is better to use answer items with 4 scales
