Urban strategies for the future development of Turin and Skopje: economic crisis and effectiveness of urban design

This paper focuses on the issues of effectiveness of the urban plans in the context of the contemporary European cities, considering mainly the subject of physical transformation of public space connected with building development. The comparison between Turin and Skopje aims to highlight the possible role of the urban design tools and planning (especially diachronic visioning), in the future of a sustainable growth of the urban European systems. The strategies of visioning of the urban plans require, to become effective, a strong liability coming from the political power and the economic feasibility: how can we consider the production of plans when this liability is going to lack? The crisis of the building sector in recent years along Europe has underlined some weaknesses of this approach to plans which had been a good instrument in a perspective of economic and physical growth. This paper assumes that the urban plan will continue to be a fundamental instrument for managing the future transformations of our cities, if we will be capable of rethinking it as a device for reassembling and including many other implications, beyond those which are usually considered by drawing the material shape of things. The paper will finally attempt to describe some strategies for rethinking the urban plan visioning from a methodological point of view

Agency theory approach of the relationship between performance, compensation and value creation in the companies listed on Euronext Lisbon

The aim of the present study was to understand, in Portugal, relationships between the behaviour of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the organizational performance, on the one hand, and relationships between the shareholder value creation and the CEO total compensation, on the other hand. This research is divided into two parts. The first part was examined whether organizational performance based on accounting measures influences organizational performance supported by market measures and whether organizational performance based on accounting measures and market measures influences the CEO total compensation. The second part of the study analyses whether organizational performance, based on accounting measures and market measures, and the CEO total compensation influence the shareholder value creation. This research was based in agency theory assumptions in order to build the analysis model. The sample was composed by companies listed on Euronext Lisbon. The data analysis was performed using the structural equation modelling method. Approch to the knowledge of Coccinellidade (Coleoptera) species diversity of Madeira and Porto Santo Islands.

Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Ecology of Aphidophaga: Biology, Ecology and Behaviour of Aphidophagous Insects.We present a list of coccinellids collected in Madeira archipelago and notice the presence of two new species; of Scymnini; Scymnus (Scymnus) abietis (Paykull) and Nephus hiekei Fürsch. We analyse the distribution and abundance at the community level, using the following measures: species richness index, abundance and relative abundance, similarity index, diversity, and evenness. 13 species from 3 families were recorded. Hippodamia variegata was the most abundant one with 29.7 % of the 141 specimens collected. Two main groups of relative abundance were identified. The first group included the 6 most common H. variegata, S. interruptus, C. arcuatus, C. septempunctata, S. levaillanti and R. litura and the second one included S. abietis, L. lophante and R. chrysomeloides. Diversity index values are relatively high. The 6 most common species comprised more than 90 % of the individuals without a very different relative abundance. Many factors other than extinction and immigration could explain the variation of the number of species on islands. The highest number of species collected in Madeira island, compared to Porto Santo, could be related with its higher elevation, soil and substrate types, plant species richness, number of habitat, habitats diversity, structure and heterogeneity of the former

Spin-orbit coupling and electron spin resonance for interacting electrons in carbon nanotubes

We review the theoretical description of spin-orbit scattering and electron spin resonance in carbon nanotubes. Particular emphasis is laid on the effects of electron-electron interactions. The spin-orbit coupling is derived, and the resulting ESR spectrum is analyzed both using the effective low-energy field theory and numerical studies of finite-size Hubbard chains and two-leg Hubbard ladders. For single-wall tubes, the field theoretical description predicts a double peak spectrum linked to the existence of spin-charge separation.
