    Adsorption of aminefluorides onto glass and the determination of surface free energy, zeta potential and adsorbed layer thickness

    Aminefluorides are known to affect bacterial adhesion to enamel. In order to obtain information on the structure of adsorbed aminefluoride coatings, dihydroaminefluoride (AmF 297) and oleylaminefluoride (AmF 335) were adsorbed onto glass from solutions with concentrations up to 10 mM. Surface tensions of the solutions were measured at 25°C. After coating the glass surfaces, surface free energies, zeta potentials and adsorbed layer thicknesses were determined from contact angles, electrophoresis and ellipsometry, respectively. Surface free energies decreased after coating with both types of aminefluoride from 109 to _ 45 mJ m-*. Coating with only high concentrations (> 5 mA4) of AmF 297 again resulted in surface free energies above 100 mJ m-‘. Zeta potentials, originally - 45 mV, became positive after coating with both types of aminefluoride (approximately + 5 mV). Coating with only AmF 297 at concentrations above 5 mM gave zeta potentials of + 20 mV. Adsorbed layer thicknesses were in the monolayer range, though AmF 297 on its own clearly formed thicker layers at higher concentrations. Both surfactants showed a tendency to form micelles in solution at concentrations higher than 1 n&f. The results indicate that both aminefluorides adsorb with the positively charged, polar group towards the glass, but only AmF 297 can form double layers at higher concentrations. The second layer, however, adsorbs with the positively charged polar groups towards the solution and is bound to the first layer by relatively weak forces between the hydrocarbon chains. Gentle rinsing with distilled water is sufficient to remove the double layers.     Spreading pressures of water and n-propanol on polymer surfaces

    Spreading pressures of water and n-propanol on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polystyrene (PS), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polycarbonate (PC), and glass are determined from ellipsometrically measured adsorption isotherms by graphical integration, yielding for water 9, 37, 26, 33, and 141 erg · cm−2 on PTFE, PS, PMMA, PC, and glass, respectively, while for n-propanol 5, 38, 26, 23, and 37 erg · cm−2, respectively. The spreading pressures for water as well as n-propanol are comparable to values previously obtained from contact angle data with water, water/n-propanol mixtures and α-bromonaphthalene using the geometric mean equation. This method yielded spreading pressures of 9, 14, 30, 27, and 70 erg · cm−2 for PTFE, PS, PMMA, PC, and glass, respectively. The numerical correspondence between the spreading pressures for water and n-propanol determined ellipsometrically with the values derived from contact angles indicates the necessity as well as the validity of taking the spreading pressures of water/n-propanol mixtures into account as a constant, if surface free energies of high energy substrata are approximated by contact angle measurements

    Adsorption of aminefluorides on human enamel

    Changes in surface characteristics of ground and polished human enamel after adsorption of two types of aminefluorides (AmF 297 and AmF 335) have been studied. After adsorption of aminefluorides from solutions with concentrations up to 10 mM for 2 min followed by rinsing of the surface with distilled water, contact angle measurements were carried out to yield surface free energies and ellipsometry was performed to yield the adsorbed layer thickness. In a separate experiment on powdered enamel, set up in an analogous way, zeta potential changes after adsorption of aminefluorides were determined in a 10 mM potassium phosphate buffer at pH 7·0. Surface free energies decreased from 88 erg·cm−2 to 52 erg·cm−2 and 35 erg·cm−1 after adsorption of AmF 297 and AmF 335 respectively at c = 1 mM. Increasing the aminefluoride concentration in solution did not affect the values obtained. Zeta potentials, originally −36 mV, became positive after adsorption, while ellipsometry indicated the buildup of adsorbed layers with a thickness between 3 run and 12 nm. All three types of experiments indicated that both AmF 297 and AmF 335 form an adsorbed monolayer on ground and polished enamel at a concentration of 1 mM. Negligible additional adsorption takes place at higher concentrations under the present experimental circumstances. In vivo, adsorbed aminefluoride layers will be rapidly covered by adsorbed protein layers, shielding both the adsorbed aminefluoride layer as well as its physicochemical characteristics. This effect has been studied in vivo by measuring surface free energy changes of ground and polished enamel, with AmF 297 and AmF 335 adsorbed at c = 2·5 mM as a function of the time, these samples were carried by test persons in partial dentures. On both types of AmF-coated enamel the surface free energies increased within 30 min to values approaching the one obtained previously for pellicle-coated ground and polished enamel (110 ± 9 erg·cm−2)

    Delta rho pi interaction leading to N* and Delta* resonances

    We have performed a calculation for the three body Δρπ\Delta \rho \pi system by using the fixed center approximation to Faddeev equations, taking the interaction between Δ\Delta and ρ\rho, Δ\Delta andπ\pi, and ρ\rho and π\pi from the chiral unitary approach. We find several peaks in the modulus squared of the three-body scattering amplitude, indicating the existence of resonances, which can be associated to known I=1/2,3/2I=1/2, 3/2 and JP=1/2+,3/2+J^P=1/2^+, 3/2^+ and 5/2+5/2^+ baryon states.Comment: Presented at the 21st European Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics, Salamanca, Spain, 30 August - 3 September 201

    The association of polypharmacy with functional decline in elderly patients undergoing cardiac surgery

    Aims: Identifying preoperative risk factors in older patients becomes more important to reduce adverse functional outcome. This study investigated the association between preoperative medication use and functional decline in elderly cardiac surgery patients and compared polypharmacy as a preoperative screening tool to a clinical frailty assessment.Methods: This sub-study of the Anaesthesia Geriatric Evaluation study included 518 patients aged ≥70 years undergoing elective cardiac surgery. The primary outcome was functional decline, defined as a worse health-related quality of life or disability 1 year after surgery. The association between polypharmacy (i.e. ≥5 prescriptions and Results: Functional decline was reported in 284 patients (55%) and preoperative polypharmacy and excessive polypharmacy showed higher risks (adjusted relative risk 1.57, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.23-1.98 and 1.93, 95% CI 1.48-2.50, respectively). Besides cardiovascular medication, proton-pump inhibitors and central nervous system medication were significantly associated with functional decline. Discrimination between models with polypharmacy or frailty was similar (area under the curve 0.67, 95% CI 0.61-0.72). The net reclassification index improved when including polypharmacy to the basic model (17%, 95% CI 0.06-0.27).Conclusion: Polypharmacy is associated with functional decline in elderly cardiac surgery patients. A preoperative medication review is easily performed and could be used as screening tool to identify patients at risk for adverse outcome after cardiac surgery.Pharmacolog

    The capability set for work: Development and validation of a new questionnaire

    __Objectives__ The aim of this study was to develop a questionnaire to measure work capabilities based on Amartya Sen’s capability approach and evaluate its validity. __Methods__ The development of the questionnaire was based on a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods: interviews, literature study, and an expert meeting. Additionally, in a survey, the validity was evaluated by means of hypotheses testing (using correlations and regression analyses). __Results__ The questionnaire consists of a set of seven capability aspects for work. For each aspect, it is determined whether it is part of a worker’s capability set, ie, when the aspect is considered valuable, is enabled in work, and is realized. The capability set was significantly correlated with work role functioning-flexibility demands (-0,187), work ability (-0.304), work performance (-0.282), worked hours (-0.073), sickness absence (yes/no) (0.098), and sickness absence days (0.105). The capability set and the overall capability item are significantly associated with all work outcomes (P<0.010). __Conclusions__ The new capability set for work questionnaire appears to be a valid instrument to measure work capabilities. The questionnaire is unique because the items include the valued aspects of work and incorporate whether a worker is able to achieve what (s)he values in his/her work. The questionnaire can be used to evaluate the capability set of workers in organizations to identify aspects that need to be addressed in interventions

    Cell Specific eQTL Analysis without Sorting Cells

    The functional consequences of trait associated SNPs are often investigated using expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) mapping. While trait-associated variants may operate in a cell-type specific manner, eQTL datasets for such cell-types may not always be available. We performed a genome-environment interaction (GxE) meta-analysis on data from 5,683 samples to infer the cell type specificity of whole blood cis-eQTLs. We demonstrate that this method is able to predict neutrophil and lymphocyte specific cis-eQTLs and replicate these predictions in independent cell-type specific datasets. Finally, we show that SNPs associated with Crohn’s disease preferentially affect gene expression within neutrophils, including the archetypal NOD2 locus

    First measurement of the circular beam asymmetry in the gamma p --> pi0 eta p reaction

    The circular photon asymmetry for pi0 eta photoproduction on the proton was measured for the first time at the tagged photon facility of the MAMI C accelerator using the Crystal Ball/TAPS photon spectrometer. The experimental results are interpreted within a phenomenological isobar model that confirms the dominant role of the Delta(1700)D33 resonance. The measured asymmetry allows us to identify small contributions from positive-parity resonances via interference terms with the dominant D33 amplitude.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys.Lett.

    Measurement of the beam-helicity asymmetry in photoproduction of π0η pairs on carbon, aluminum, and lead

    The beam-helicity asymmetry was measured, for the first time, in photoproduction of π0η pairs on carbon, aluminum, and lead, with the A2 experimental setup at MAMI. The results are compared to an earlier measurement on a free proton and to the corresponding theoretical calculations. The Mainz model is used to predict the beam-helicity asymmetry for the nuclear targets. The present results indicate that the photoproduction mechanism for π0η pairs on nuclei is similar to photoproduction on a free nucleon. This process is dominated by the D33 partial wave with the ηΔ(1232) intermediate state

    National laboratory-based surveillance system for antimicrobial resistance: a successful tool to support the control of antimicrobial resistance in the Netherlands

    An important cornerstone in the control of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a well-designed quantitative system for the surveillance of spread and temporal trends in AMR. Since 2008, the Dutch national AMR surveillance system, based on routine data from medical microbiological laboratories (MMLs), has developed into a successful tool to support the control of AMR in the Netherlands. It provides background information for policy making in public health and healthcare services, supports development of empirical antibiotic therapy guidelines and facilitates in-depth research. In addition, participation of the MMLs in the national AMR surveillance network has contributed to sharing of knowledge and quality improvement. A future improvement will be the implementation of a new semantic standard together with standardised data transfer, which will reduce errors in data handling and enable a more real-time surveillance.
