An Ontology Based Method to Solve Query Identifier Heterogeneity in Post-Genomic Clinical Trials

    Get PDF
The increasing amount of information available for biomedical research has led to issues related to knowledge discovery in large collections of data. Moreover, Information Retrieval techniques must consider heterogeneities present in databases, initially belonging to different domains—e.g. clinical and genetic data. One of the goals, among others, of the ACGT European is to provide seamless and homogeneous access to integrated databases. In this work, we describe an approach to overcome heterogeneities in identifiers inside queries. We present an ontology classifying the most common identifier semantic heterogeneities, and a service that makes use of it to cope with the problem using the described approach. Finally, we illustrate the solution by analysing a set of real queries

Ca2+-regulated mitochondrial carriers of ATP-Mg2+/Pi: evolutionary insights in protozoans

In addition to its uptake across the Ca2+ uniporter, intracellular calcium signals can stimulate mitochondrial metabolism activating metabolite exchangers of the inner mitochondrial membrane belonging to the mitochondrial carrier family (SLC25). One of these Ca2+-regulated mitochondrial carriers (CaMCs) are the reversible ATP-Mg2+/Pi transporters, or SCaMCs, required for maintaining optimal adenine nucleotide (AdN) levels in the mitochondrial matrix representing an alternative transporter to the ADP/ATP translocases (AAC). This CaMC has a distinctive Calmodulin-like (CaM-like) domain fused to the carrier domain that makes its transport activity strictly dependent on cytosolic Ca2+ signals. Here we investigate about its origin analysing its distribution and features in unicellular eukaryotes. Unexpectedly, we find two types of ATP-Mg2+/Pi carriers, the canonical ones and shortened variants lacking the CaM-like domain. Phylogenetic analysis shows that both SCaMC variants have a common origin, unrelated to AACs, suggesting in turn that recurrent losses of the regulatory module have occurred in the different phyla. They are excluding variants that show a more limited distribution and less conservation than AACs. Interestingly, these truncated variants of SCaMC are found almost exclusively in parasitic protists, such as apicomplexans, kinetoplastides or animal-patogenic oomycetes, and in green algae, suggesting that its lost could be related to certain life-styles. In addition, we find an intricate structural diversity in these variants that may be associated with their pathogenicity. The consequences on SCaMC functions of these new SCaMC-b variants are discussedThis work has been funded by a grant from the Spanish Ministry of Science SAF2017-82560-R (to AdelA), and by an institutional grant from the Fundación Ramón Areces to the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa (CBMSO

In this work, beginning at the gestation development of Organic Law over security forces and corps -LOFCS- and the conditioning factors which concurred in order to its approval, we proceed to the analysis of the casuistry which emerged in its aplicaction that has devolep in multiple contradictions whichs have been appearing in practique and that seem to requiere a reform of this regulatory body.

Creativity training programs in primary education: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Get PDF
The aim of the systematic review was to examine the effectiveness of creativity training programs, interventions, or practices on creativity or divergent thinking in typical developing primary education pupils. A systematic review protocol was designed and implemented, and a systematic literature search was conducted across diverse electronic platforms and databases, as well as other resources. The final sample of high methodological quality studies reviewed was 6. A narrative content analysis approach was adopted, and a random effects analysis with restricted maximum likelihood was used to conduct the meta-analysis. The meta-analytic estimate of the overall effect size of the combined studies shows moderate effect across all studies. The results suggest that some programs, interventions, or practices exist that can effectively help teachers, practitioners, and policy makers to promote creativity or divergent thinking in school-aged children

    Get PDF
Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the importance of Knowledge Management as a tool for improving business processes in a different context from the industrial organizations, as an archaeological museum. Design/methodology/approach: Using data collected from the National Museum of the Sultanate of Oman in Muscat, a CMP methodology (business process improvement cycle) for analysis and improvement of processes business is designed and validated. This application is described as an eight phases process based on Six Sigma DMAIC. Findings: As the results obtained by the process improvement initiative show, we highlight the relevance of the improvement in all aspects regarding the security in showcases in that context. Research limitations/implications: The complexity of implementing indicators and the partial vision of the project as data were only obtained from a part of one of the companies involved in the construction of the museum. An important implication of this paper is in order to present a methodology to improve the museum processes focusing on the reduction of errors and also adding value for the visitors. Practical implications: The relevance to intervene on certain relevant variables at different levels of management performance is verified. Social implications: Improving the quality of leisure services in order to the identification of certain challenges regarding the nature and competitiveness of cultural services. Originality/value: The current work has served as a repository of knowledge applicable to new similar projects, in which to take into account the peculiarities of each case and in particular the level of quality demanded by the client in a cultural context. It is important to take into account the degree of avoidable dissatisfaction (number of solvable problems that would lead to dissatisfaction), the opportunity for improvement, the reduction of operational waste and the need for coordination.Peer Reviewe

Crop and weed response to reduced fertilization and tillage system in rainfed cereal crops

    Get PDF
This work shows different results obtained in 2013 and 2014 growing seasons in a wheat monoculture field experiment (E1) lasting 32 years, and in a wheat-pea rotation field experiment (E2) lasting 13 years. Two levels of nitrogen fertilization. were considered, traditional and reduced (rates were reduced by 50%), in three different tillage systems: conventional tillage (LC), minimum tillage (LM) and no-tillage (SD). Seedling emergence was not affected by tillage and fertilizer rates except in the pea crop in LC in 2013. Wheat yields peaked in 2014 in SD with reduced fertilization. Considering the weed flora, main species such as Chenopodium album, Amaranthus blitoides and Polygonum aviculare were more abundant in LC and LM. However, Papaver rhoeas and Descurainia sophia were more abundant in SD, and Anacyclus clavatus in LM. The highest weed density was observed in SD and just Lactuca serriola was the only weed species affected by the level of fertilization
