About multi-resolution techniques for large eddy simulation of reactive multi-phase flows
A numerical technique for mesh refinement in the HeaRT (Heat Release and Transfer) numerical code is presented. In the CFD
framework, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) approach is gaining in importance as a tool for simulating turbulent combustion pro-
cesses, also if this approach has an high computational cost due to the complexity of the turbulent modeling and the high number of
grid points necessary to obtain a good numerical solution. In particular, when a numerical simulation of a big domain is performed
with a structured grid, the number of grid points can increase so much that the simulation becomes impossible: this problem can
be overcomed with a mesh refinement technique. Mesh refinement technique developed for HeaRT numerical code (a staggered
finite difference code) is based on an high order reconstruction of the variables at the grid interfaces by means of a least square
quasi-eno interpolation: numerical code is written in modern Fortran (2003 standard of newer) and is parallelized using domain
decomposition and message passing interface (MPI) standard
Enhancing heat treatment efficacy for insect pest control: A case study of a CFD application to improve the design and structure of a flour mill
Heat treatment of the indoor environment of flour mills is an alternative technique to chemical fumigation for controlling insect pests. The aim of this research was to assess temperature distribution inside a flour mill during a heat treatment for insect pest control by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling and simulation. The model was validated by using the average values of experimental data acquired during a heat treatment carried out in a flour mill, which is representative of the building materials and techniques used in the milling industry of South Italy. Simulations were carried out in steady-state conditions, and simulated data were validated by the average values of air and wall temperature measurements. Since the modelled temperature distribution in the mill fit the real one with a good accuracy (maximum error equal to 2.57 °C), the CFD model was considered reliable to simulate other operating conditions. Since it was observed that the internal surface temperatures of the mill were much lower than the value required for the success of the heat treatment, equal to 45 °C, the CFD model could be used for improving the effectiveness of heat treatments in the flour mill. Application of the proposed CFD model in the simulation of specific interventions could be aimed at improving both building performance and fan heaters' localisatio,n in order to find the best configuration
Observations of Isolated Neutron Stars with the ESO Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics Demonstrator
High-energy observations have unveiled peculiar classes of isolated neutron
stars which, at variance with radio pulsars, are mostly radio silent and not
powered by the star rotation. Among these objects are the magnetars,
hyper-magnetized neutron stars characterized by transient X-ray/gamma-ray
emission, and neutron stars with purely thermal, and in most cases stationary,
X-ray emission (a.k.a., X-ray dim isolated neutron stars or XDINSs). While
apparently dissimilar in their high-energy behavior and age, both magnetars and
XDINSs have similar periods and unusually high magnetic fields. This suggests a
tantalizing scenario where the former evolve into the latter.Discovering so far
uninvestigated similarities between the multi-wavelength properties of these
two classes would be a further step forward to establish an evolutionary
scenario. A most promising channels is the near infrared (NIR) one, where
magnetars are characterized by a distinctive spectral flattening with respect
to the extrapolation of the soft X-ray spectrum. We observed the two XDINSs RX
J0420.0-5022 and RX J1856.5-3754 with the Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics
Demonstrator (MAD) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) as part of the instrument
guaranteed time observations program, to search for their NIR counterparts.
Both RX J1856.5-3754 and RX J0420.0-5022 were not detected down to K_s ~20 and
Ks ~21.5, respectively. In order to constrain the relation between XDINSs and
magnetars it would be of importance to perform deeper NIR observations. A good
candidate is 1RXS J214303.7+065419 which is the XDINS with the highest inferred
magnetic field.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic
The plants, rituals and spells that 'cured' helminthiasis in Sicily
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The author reports on the plants, rituals and spells used against worms and the so-called <it>scantu </it>(fright) in some areas of Sicily. The work is based on ethnobotanical research carried out, prevalently, between 2002-2006, in some areas of Eastern, South-Eastern, North-Central and South-Central Sicily.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This research is based on dialogue. Senior 'healers' were contacted; furthermore, doctors, teachers, farmers and in general 'experts' with herbs and 'magic' rituals. Information was collected about the way the plants of folk medicine are prepared. The interviewees were also invited to recite prayers and spells against helminthiasis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The author has highlighted the importance of how, in some parts of Sicily, some ailments like helminthiasis and other correlated pathologies like <it>scantu </it>are 'treated' and, especially within the rural social classes, by folk medicine remedies, herbal practises, particular prayers, rituals and spells.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>As regards health/illness, it should be noted that in the last ten years conventional medicine has provided very satisfactory results even resolving potentially mortal pathologies. However, in certain social classes, there is no real collaboration between conventional and folk medicine; so for some senior citizens, the 'healer' with his rituals and empirical and magical herbs is still the person to turn to for the 'cure' of particular ailments. Interest in these practises from ancestral heritage in an advanced country like Italy, is only relevant if the aim is to recoup a cultural identity which is already in decline.</p> <p>It is significant to report a piece: on 14 October 2007 the news on a well-known national Italian TV channel reported an interview with a 94 year-old man from Arbatax (Sardinia) referred to as a 'healer' because both his townspeople and others from all over the world go to him for his cures. He is not paid except in kind and has been known to cure St. Anthony's fire, burns, scalding and marine fungal infections, by smearing his saliva over the infected part and reciting 'special words'.</p
Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor and sarcoglycan delta genetic variants can affect cardiovascular risk in chronic kidney disease patients under hemodialysis
Background
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients under hemodialysis show a higher risk of cardiovascular (CV) mortality and morbidity than the general population. This study aims to identify genetic markers that could explain the increased CV risk in hemodialysis.
Methods
A total of 245 CKD patients under hemodialysis were recruited and followed up for 5\u2009years to record CV events. Genetic analysis was performed using single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) genotyping by Infinium Expanded Multi-Ethnic Genotyping Array (Illumina, San Diego, CA, USA) comparing patients with and without a history of CV events [161 cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and 84 no CVDs]. The fixation index (Fst) measure was used to identify the most differentiated SNPs, and gene ontology analysis [Protein Analysis THrough Evolutionary Relationships (PANTHER) and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA)] was applied to define the biological/pathological roles of the associated SNPs. Partitioning tree analysis interrogated the genotype\u2013phenotype relationship between discovered genetic variants and CV phenotypes. Cox regression analysis measured the effect of these SNPs on new CV events during the follow-up (FU).
Results
Fst analysis identified 3218 SNPs that were significantly different between CVD and no CVD. Gene ontology analysis identified two of these SNPs as involved in cardiovascular disease pathways (Ingenuity Pathway) and heart development (Panther) and belonging to 2 different genes: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP1R) and Sarcoglycan delta (SGCD). The phenotype\u2013genotype analysis found a higher percentage of CVD patients carrying the GLP1R rs10305445 allele A (P\u2009=\u20090.03) and lower percentages of CVD patients carrying the SGCD rs145292439 allele A (P\u2009=\u20090.038). Moreover, SGCD rs145292439 was associated with higher levels of high-density lipoprotein (P\u2009=\u20090.015). Cox analysis confirmed the increased frequency of CV events during the 5-year FU in patients carrying GLP1R rs1035445 allele A but it did not show any significant association with SGCD rs145292439.
Conclusions
This study identified GLP1R rs10305445 and SCGD rs145292439 as potential genetic markers that may explain the higher risk of CVD in hemodialysis patients
A new Low Gain Avalanche Diode concept: the double-LGAD
This paper describes the new concept of the double-LGAD. The goal is to
increase the charge at the input of the electronics, keeping a time resolution
equal or better than a standard (single) LGAD; this has been realized by adding
the charges of two coupled LGADs while still using a single front-end
electronics. The study here reported has been done starting from single LGAD
with a thickness of 25 \textmu{m}, 35 \textmu{m} and 50 \textmu{m}.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2208.0571
ChPT tests at the NA48 and NA62 experiments at CERN
The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated unprecedented statistics of
rare kaon decays in the Ke4 modes: Ke4(+-) ()
and Ke4(00) () with nearly one percent
background contamination. The detailed study of form factors and branching
rates, based on these data, has been completed recently. The results brings new
inputs to low energy strong interactions description and tests of Chiral
Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and lattice QCD calculations. In particular, new
data support the ChPT prediction for a cusp in the invariant mass
spectrum at the two charged pions threshold for Ke4(00) decay. New final
results from an analysis of about 400 rare
decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN during
low intensity runs with minimum bias trigger configurations are presented. The
results include a model-independent decay rate measurement and fits to ChPT
description.Comment: XIIth International Conference on Heavy Quarks and Leptons 2014,

First Observation and Measurement of the Decay K+- -> pi+- e+ e- gamma
Using the full data set of the NA48/2 experiment, the decay K+- -> pi+- e+ e-
gamma is observed for the first time, selecting 120 candidates with 7.3 +- 1.7
estimated background events. With K+- -> pi+- pi0D as normalisation channel,
the branching ratio is determined in a model-independent way to be Br(K+- ->
pi+- e+ e- gamma, m_eegamma > 260 MeV/c^2) = (1.19 +- 0.12_stat +- 0.04_syst) x
10^-8. This measured value and the spectrum of the e+ e- gamma invariant mass
allow a comparison with predictions of Chiral Perturbation Theory.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in Phys.Lett.
