En esta industria, como se estudiará en el presente trabajo de fin de grado, el punto de venta cobra una importancia mayor que en otros sectores, debido a las características que conforman a los productos que se comercializan. Las marcas más renombradas de este sector han sabido combinar la presencia en el punto de venta con estos enfoques y crear estrategias de alto contenido creativo. Para conocer si los enfoques del marketing sensorial y experiencial en el punto de venta son la mayor ventaja competitiva que disponen las marcas de este sector, se ha tomado como ejemplo Lush Cosmetics, que ha permitido un estudio mucho más concreto ya que ha eliminado el marketing online de redes sociales de su estrategia de comunicación, y permitirá la comparación con otras empresas que mantienen estas acciones de marketing, pudiendo comprobar así la eficacia de los dos primeros enfoques en este sector.[EN] Three of the marketing approaches that currently have a significant presence in the natural cosmetics and personal care sector are sensory, experiential, and online marketing. In this industry, as will be studied in this final degree project, the point of sale holds greater importance than in other sectors due to the characteristics that define the products being marketed. The most renowned brands in this sector have successfully combined their presence at the point of sale with these approaches and have created highly creative strategies. To determine whether sensory and experiential marketing at the point of sale represents the greatest competitive advantage for brands in this sector, Lush Cosmetics has been taken as an example. This choice allows for a more concrete study as Lush has eliminated online social media marketing from its communication strategy, enabling comparison with other companies that maintain these communication actions and thus verifying the effectiveness of the first two approaches in this sector

    ZnO Nanostructures Synthesized by Chemical Solutions

    Nanomaterials have been synthesized using several different techniques. Some of these techniques are sophisticated, expensive and need certain training before use. However, there are other highly efficient methods for preparing nanomaterials that are easy to work with and require no specialized equipment, making them relatively inexpensive routes for synthesis. The least expensive routes are those that are classified as solution‐based techniques such as colloidal, sol‐gel and microwave‐assisted synthesis. The focus of this chapter is on a general description of each technique with recent advances in synthesis, doping processes and applications. Specifically, these processes are discussed in connection with the synthesis of ZnO compounds and its related nanomaterials

    CdTe Thin Films: Deposition Techniques and Applications

    The II-IV semiconductor compound, CdTe, has suitable electrical and optical properties as photovoltaic and high-energy radiation sensor material. As an absorber material for thin-film-based solar cells, CdTe holds the potentiality to fabricate high-efficiency solar cells by means of low-cost technologies. This chapter presents a comprehensive review on the CdTe thin-film deposition techniques as well as on the several configurations for the solar cell structures that have led the best efficiency conversion. Current CdTe thin-film deposition techniques include sputtering, close spaced vapor transport (CSVT), chemical spray pyrolysis, and electrodeposition. These techniques have easily been adapted to deposit polycrystalline CdTe films on various flexible and rigid substrates. In regard to the device structure configuration, a variety of partner materials (transparent contact, optical window, buffer layer) were tested, and CdTe film thickness was varied to develop opaque and semitransparent devices by some techniques mentioned above. In this chapter, we will discuss about each technique used for CdTe thin-film deposition as well as its advantages and disadvantages

Siendo conformada por personas de 12 a 19 años, estos individuos se caracterizan por el deseo de encontrar su lugar en el mundo y atravesar nuevas experiencias. No obstante, si carecen de una adecuada guía, el riesgo de tomar decisiones íntimas a conductas de riesgo –como el consumo de drogas– incrementa. Debido a ello, las dimensiones de crianza, como el control y la calidez, son aspectos que influyen directamente en la formación del adolescente al impactar significativamente en su desarrollo personal y social. Asimismo, si la regulación emocional del adolescente no alcanza un grado adaptativo, puede surgir una predisposición al consumo, y posterior dependencia, de drogas a fin de aliviar emociones negativas y generar emociones positivas

    Traffic Density Exposure, Oxidative Stress Biomarkers and Plasma Metabolomics in a Population-Based Sample: The Hortega Study

    Exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) generates oxidative stress, with downstream effects at the metabolic level. Human studies of traffic density and metabolomic markers, however, are rare. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the cross-sectional association between traffic density in the street of residence with oxidative stress and metabolomic profiles measured in a population-based sample from Spain. We also explored in silico the potential biological implications of the findings. Secondarily, we assessed the contribution of oxidative stress to the association between exposure to traffic density and variation in plasma metabolite levels. Traffic density was defined as the average daily traffic volume over an entire year within a buffer of 50 m around the participants' residence. Plasma metabolomic profiles and urine oxidative stress biomarkers were measured in samples from 1181 Hortega Study participants by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography, respectively. Traffic density was associated with 7 (out of 49) plasma metabolites, including amino acids, fatty acids, products of bacterial and energy metabolism and fluid balance metabolites. Regarding urine oxidative stress biomarkers, traffic associations were positive for GSSG/GSH% and negative for MDA. A total of 12 KEGG pathways were linked to traffic-related metabolites. In a protein network from genes included in over-represented pathways and 63 redox-related candidate genes, we observed relevant proteins from the glutathione cycle. GSSG/GSH% and MDA accounted for 14.6% and 12.2% of changes in isobutyrate and the CH2CH2CO fatty acid moiety, respectively, which is attributable to traffic exposure. At the population level, exposure to traffic density was associated with specific urine oxidative stress and plasma metabolites.     Blood DNA methylation and liver cancer in American Indians: evidence from the Strong Heart Study

    Purpose: Liver cancer incidence among American Indians/Alaska Natives has risen over the past 20 years. Peripheral blood DNA methylation may be associated with liver cancer and could be used as a biomarker for cancer risk. We evaluated the association of blood DNA methylation with risk of liver cancer. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study in 2324 American Indians, between age 45 and 75 years, from Arizona, Oklahoma, North Dakota and South Dakota who participated in the Strong Heart Study between 1989 and 1991. Liver cancer deaths (n = 21) were ascertained using death certificates obtained through 2017. The mean follow-up duration (SD) for non-cases was 25.1 (5.6) years and for cases, 11.0 (8.8) years. DNA methylation was assessed from blood samples collected at baseline using MethylationEPIC BeadChip 850 K arrays. We used Cox regression models adjusted for age, sex, center, body mass index, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, smoking, alcohol consumption, and immune cell proportions to examine the associations. Results: We identified 9 CpG sites associated with liver cancer. cg16057201 annotated to MRFAP1) was hypermethylated among cases vs. non-cases (hazard ratio (HR) for one standard deviation increase in methylation was 1.25 (95% CI 1.14, 1.37). The other eight CpGs were hypomethylated and the corresponding HRs (95% CI) ranged from 0.58 (0.44, 0.75) for cg04967787 (annotated to PPRC1) to 0.77 (0.67, 0.88) for cg08550308. We also assessed 7 differentially methylated CpG sites associated with liver cancer in previous studies. The adjusted HR for cg15079934 (annotated to LPS1) was 1.93 (95% CI 1.10, 3.39).     Cadmium, Smoking, and Human Blood DNA Methylation Profiles in Adults from the Strong Heart Study.

    The epigenetic effects of individual environmental toxicants in tobacco remain largely unexplored. Cadmium (Cd) has been associated with smoking-related health effects, and its concentration in tobacco smoke is higher in comparison with other metals. We studied the association of Cd and smoking exposures with human blood DNA methylation (DNAm) profiles. We also evaluated the implication of findings to relevant methylation pathways and the potential contribution of Cd exposure from smoking to explain the association between smoking and site-specific DNAm. We conducted an epigenome-wide association study of urine Cd and self-reported smoking (current and former vs. never, and cumulative smoking dose) with blood DNAm in 790,026 CpGs (methylation sites) measured with the Illumina Infinium Human MethylationEPIC (Illumina Inc.) platform in 2,325 adults 45-74 years of age who participated in the Strong Heart Study in 1989-1991. In a mediation analysis, we estimated the amount of change in DNAm associated with smoking that can be independently attributed to increases in urine Cd concentrations from smoking. We also conducted enrichment analyses and in silico protein-protein interaction networks to explore the biological relevance of the findings. At a false discovery rate (FDR)-corrected level of 0.05, we found 6 differentially methylated positions (DMPs) for Cd; 288 and 17, respectively, for current and former smoking status; and 77 for cigarette pack-years. Enrichment analyses of these DMPs displayed enrichment of 58 and 6 Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes gene sets, respectively, including biological pathways for cancer and cardiovascular disease. In in silico protein-to-protein networks, we observed key proteins in DNAm pathways directly and indirectly connected to Cd- and smoking-DMPs. Among DMPs that were significant for both Cd and current smoking (annotated to PRSS23, AHRR, F2RL3, RARA, and 2q37.1), we found statistically significant contributions of Cd to smoking-related DNAm. Beyond replicating well-known smoking epigenetic signatures, we found novel DMPs related to smoking. Moreover, increases in smoking-related Cd exposure were associated with differential DNAm.     Associations of maternal arsenic exposure with adult fasting glucose and insulin resistance in the Strong Heart Study and Strong Heart Family Study

    Experimental and prospective epidemiologic evidence suggest that arsenic exposure has diabetogenic effects. However, little is known about how family exposure to arsenic may affect risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D)-related outcomes in adulthood. We evaluated the association of both maternal and offspring arsenic exposure with fasting glucose and incident T2D in 466 participants of the Strong Heart Family Study. Total arsenic (ΣAs) exposure was calculated as the sum of inorganic arsenic (iAs) and methylated (MMA, DMA) arsenic species in maternal and offspring baseline urine. Median maternal ΣAs at baseline (1989-91) was 7.6 µg/g creatinine, while median offspring ΣAs at baseline (2001-03) was 4.5 µg/g creatinine. Median offspring glucose in 2006-2009 was 94 mg/dL, and 79 participants developed T2D. The fully adjusted mean difference (95% CI) for offspring glucose was 4.40 (-3.46, 12.26) mg/dL per IQR increase in maternal ΣAs vs. 2.72 (-4.91 to 10.34) mg/dL per IQR increase in offspring ΣAs. The fully adjusted odds ratio (95%CI) of incident T2D was 1.35 (1.07, 1.69) for an IQR increase in maternal ΣAs and 1.15 (0.92, 1.43) for offspring ΣAs. The association of maternal ΣAs with T2D outcomes were attenuated with adjustment for offspring adiposity markers. Familial exposure to arsenic, as measured in mothers 15-20 years before offspring follow-up, is associated with increased odds of offspring T2D.     Urinary Metal Levels and Coronary Artery Calcification: Longitudinal Evidence in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

    Objective: Growing evidence indicates that exposure to metals are risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). We hypothesized that higher urinary levels of metals with prior evidence of an association with CVD, including non-essential (cadmium , tungsten, and uranium) and essential (cobalt, copper, and zinc) metals are associated with baseline and rate of change of coronary artery calcium (CAC) progression, a subclinical marker of atherosclerotic CVD. Methods: We analyzed data from 6,418 participants in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) with spot urinary metal levels at baseline (2000-2002) and 1-4 repeated measures of spatially weighted coronary calcium score (SWCS) over a ten-year period. SWCS is a unitless measure of CAC highly correlated to the Agatston score but with numerical values assigned to individuals with Agatston score=0. We used linear mixed effect models to assess the association of baseline urinary metal levels with baseline SWCS, annual change in SWCS, and SWCS over ten years of follow-up. Urinary metals (adjusted to μg/g creatinine) and SWCS were log transformed. Models were progressively adjusted for baseline sociodemographic factors, estimated glomerular filtration rate, lifestyle factors, and clinical factors. Results: At baseline, the median and interquartile range (25th, 75th) of SWCS was 6.3 (0.7, 58.2). For urinary cadmium, the fully adjusted geometric mean ratio (GMR) (95%Cl) of SWCS comparing the highest to the lowest quartile was 1.51 (1.32, 1.74) at baseline and 1.75 (1.47, 2.07) at ten years of follow-up. For urinary tungsten, uranium, and cobalt the corresponding GMRs at ten years of follow-up were 1.45 (1.23, 1.71), 1.39 (1.17, 1.64), and 1.47 (1.25, 1.74), respectively. For copper and zinc, the association was attenuated with adjustment for clinical risk factors; GMRs at ten years of follow-up before and after adjustment for clinical risk factors were 1.55 (1.30, 1.84) and 1.33 (1.12, 1.58), respectively, for copper and 1.85 (1.56, 2.19) and 1.57 (1.33, 1.85) for zinc. Conclusion: Higher levels of cadmium, tungsten, uranium, cobalt, copper, and zinc, as measured in urine, were associated with subclinical CVD at baseline and at follow-up.
