Mathematical model for quay crane assignment problem with tidal constraints
Objetive: The operations associated with loading and unloading of container ships demand the use of quay cranes that represent one of the most expensive resources of a maritime terminal. Therefore, the assignment of cranes to ships must be optimized. This article proposes a mathematical model to optimize the decision of assignment of cranes to ships, considering the behavior of tides, which is a not commonly considered factor in the scientific literature for similar problems. Metodology: A mixed integer linear mathematical model was designed and tested for the actual case of a container terminal in Buenaventura-Colombia with satisfactory results. Results: With the available capacity the model allows to mobilize up to 2800 containers per half day, while the number of containers per ship in the real case does not exceed 2000 units. Conclusions: The consideration of tides, combined with downtime penalty cost can allow using smaller number of cranes with savings in energy cost.Objetivo: Las operaciones asociadas con la carga y descarga de buques portacontenedores exigen el uso de grúas de muelle que representan uno de los recursos más caros de una terminal marítima. Plant water potential improves prediction of empirical stomatal models
Climate change is expected to lead to increases in drought frequency and severity, with deleterious effects on many ecosystems. Stomatal responses to changing environmental conditions form the backbone of all ecosystem models, but are based on empirical relationships and are not well-tested during drought conditions. Here, we use a dataset of 34 woody plant species spanning global forest biomes to examine the effect of leaf water potential on stomatal conductance and test the predictive accuracy of three major stomatal models and a recently proposed model. We find that current leaf-level empirical models have consistent biases of over-prediction of stomatal conductance during dry conditions, particularly at low soil water potentials. Furthermore, the recently proposed stomatal conductance model yields increases in predictive capability compared to current models, and with particular improvement during drought conditions. Our results reveal that including stomatal sensitivity to declining water potential and consequent impairment of plant water transport will improve predictions during drought conditions and show that many biomes contain a diversity of plant stomatal strategies that range from risky to conservative stomatal regulation during water stress. Such improvements in stomatal simulation are greatly needed to help unravel and predict the response of ecosystems to future climate extremes.Funding for this research was provided by NSF DEB EF-1340270 and the Climate Mitigation Initiative at the Princeton Environmental Institute, Princeton University. Prevención de la infección por Streptococcus del grupo B en gestantes
Introduction: The neonatal infection by Group B Streptococcus in pregnant women is a growing problem worldwide and has multiple consequences for the newborn, so its prevention directly impacts neonatal morbimortality. Objective: To provide the reader with relevant information about the clinical importance, new screening methods and ways to prevent Group B Streptococcus infection in pregnant women which will be useful to avoid complications in the pairing of maternal-fetal. Methodology: In this review of literature, 53 articles were studied addressing local and international evidence by using PubMed, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar databases; within the search criteria the year of publication was taken into account to do so, thus articles published from 2011 were included. Results: The international community has developed guidelines and prevention plans for this infection. Currently, for an adequate prophylaxis and prevention, various methods are proposed such as the screening for expectant mothers, the use of antibiotics during pregnancy and childbirth, and the development of maternal immunization to prevent infections as well. Conclusions: The colonization by Group B Streptococcus in pregnant women and the risk that this entails to the newborn and his/her mother requires constant updating in techniques for screening, prevention and management of it. Numerous advances in these fields of study have been carried out in recent years, and this strengthening and its development will be the key to impact, in a positive way, the maternal-fetal morbimortality. Woody plants optimise stomatal behaviour relative to hydraulic risk
Stomatal response to environmental conditions forms the backbone of all ecosystem and carbon cycle models, but is largely based on empirical relationships. Evolutionary theories of stomatal behaviour are critical for guarding against prediction errors of empirical models under future climates. Longstanding theory holds that stomata maximise fitness by acting to maintain constant marginal water use efficiency over a given time horizon, but a recent evolutionary theory proposes that stomata instead maximise carbon gain minus carbon costs/risk of hydraulic damage. Using data from 34 species that span global forest biomes, we find that the recent carbon‐maximisation optimisation theory is widely supported, revealing that the evolution of stomatal regulation has not been primarily driven by attainment of constant marginal water use efficiency. Optimal control of stomata to manage hydraulic risk is likely to have significant consequences for ecosystem fluxes during drought, which is critical given projected intensification of the global hydrological cycle.W.R.L.A. acknowledges funding for this research from NSF 1714972 and from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Agricultural and Food Research Initiative Competitive Programme, Ecosystem Services and Agro-Ecosystem Management, grant no. 2017-05521. Efecto de dos sistemas de cocción sobre la transferencia de calor y la letalidad microbiana durante la cocción de jamones
Cooking systems for cooked meat derivatives must provide efficient and homogeneous heat transfer, in such a way as to assure the quality and microbiological safety of the final product. In this study, the effect of two cooking systems on heat transfer efficiency and the process lethality during cooking of York-type hams was evaluated and compared. For this, York-type hams were cooked in a cooking module with water and a steam oven, at a temperature of 80 ° C until reaching an internal temperature of 72 ° C. The variables measured were the cooking time, the cooking speed, the convective heat transfer coefficient, the pasteurization value (P value) and the accumulated lethality of the equivalent process, the latter two taking as reference Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. The results showed that the heating time decreased significantly (p < 0.05) during cooking in the module. While the heating rate and the convective coefficient were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in this same system. For P0, no significant differences (p > 0.05) were found between treatments, highlighting that this was greater than the lethality criterion defined for both microorganisms and was reached before reaching 72 °C in the hams. These results allowed us to conclude that cooking in water offers a more efficient and homogeneous heat transfer, as well as microbiological safety in the final product.
