This thesis will be exploring the crucial need for comprehensive, inclusive, and trauma-informed sexual health education at the collegiate level for undergraduate and graduate students. Using a critical action approach, I propose the implementation of a designated sexual health education student service office to provide sexual health education programs, initiatives, support, and education for their students, titled the Sexual Education Xploration Center (SEX-C). This intervention is meant to provide student support throughout the academic year in the similar way more traditional student offices offer resources, education, connection, and training to students on an array of subjects. Using Kimberle Crenshaw’s theory on intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1991) and Albert Bandura’s social cognitive theory (1988), I will assert the dire necessity for a continuous sexual health education student service center to oppose the cycle that is poor sexual health education. My initial interest in sexual health education came from realizing that poor sexual health education has an impact on queer and transgender individuals in addition to additional minorities, and this remains true in the larger theme that is sexual health education

The watersoluble organic compounds in carbonaceous chondrite meteorites constitute a record of the synthetic reactions occurring at the birth of the solar system and those taking place during parent body alteration and may have been important for the later origins and development of life on Earth. In this present work, we have developed a novel methodology for the simultaneous analysis of the molecular distribution, compoundspecific 13C, and enantiomeric compositions of aliphatic monocarboxylic acids (MCA) extracted from the hotwater extracts of 16 carbonaceous chondrites from CM, CR, CO, CV, and CK groups. We observed high concentrations of meteoritic MCAs, with total carbon weight percentages which in some cases approached those of carbonates and insoluble organic matter. Moreover, we found that the concentration of MCAs in CR chondrites is higher than in the other meteorite groups, with acetic acid exhibiting the highest concentration in all samples. The abundance of MCAs decreased with increasing molecular weight and with increasing aqueous and/or thermal alteration experienced by the meteorite sample. The 13C isotopic values of MCAs ranged from 52 to +27, and aside from an inverse relationship between 13C value and carbon straightchain length for C3C6 MCAs in Murchison, the 13Cisotopic values did not correlate with the number of carbon atoms per molecule. We also observed racemic compositions of 2methylbutanoic acid in CM and CR chondrites. We used this novel analytical protocol and collective data to shed new light on the prebiotic origins of chondritic MCAs

Could halophilic archaea improve the traditional salted anchovies (Engraulis encrasicholus L) safety and quality?

    Get PDF
Aims: The positive influence of two selected extremely halophilic archaea strains in the production of salted anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus, L., 1758) was highlighted. Methods and Results: Anchovies produced with salt artificially contaminated with halophiles exhibited lower loads of staphylococci, Enterobacteriaceae and lactic acid bacteria, and a reduced content of histamine as well as an improved organoleptic acceptance. Conclusions: The findings of this survey are expected to enhance the safety of salted anchovies, with regard to the histamine formation during ripening, and to improve the sensory attributes of this product. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study represents the first report on the positive influence of halophilic archaea in traditional salted anchovies production, thus suggesting new perspectives about a conscious employment of properly selected haloarchaea strains in this traditional manufactur

High velocity infrared thermography and numerical trajectories of solid particles in compressible gas flow

    Get PDF
The use of High Velocity Infrared Thermography as a valuable alternative to other existing techniques for the visualization and tracking of solid particles transported by a gas jet has been assessed by considering different situations in terms of problem characteristic numbers (jet Reynolds and Mach numbers and Particle Stokes and gravitational Froude numbers). Particles paths have also been calculated by means of a hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian technique under the intent to cross-validate the two (experimental and numerical) approaches. The results indicate that such a strategy is robust and sufficiently flexible to be used in relatively wide regions of the space of parameters. Experiments have clearly demonstrated that thermography can properly capture particle dynamics with a level of detail comparable to that provided by simulations. Computations have proved to be valuable on their own by allowing the explorations of regions of the parameters space otherwise out of reach. Different tests have been conducted considering both isolated particles and "swarms". We show that the observed dynamics are induced by the delicate interplay of different effects, including inertial, gravitational and eventually "lift" contributions produced by a non-perfect horizontal orientation of the jet or other uncertainties (such as those due to a non mono-sized set of particles).

Indigenous yeast communities in the environment of ‘Rovello bianco’’ grape variety and their use in commercial white wine fermentation

    Get PDF
The indigenous yeast communities associated with several vineyard habitats were analysed. Wild yeasts were isolated, differentiated at strain level and identified. A phylogenetic tree based on partial 26S rRNA genes was constructed. The strains were characterized and the indigenous Saccharomyces cerevisiae GR1 was then used to carry out a vinification process and compared with a commercial yeast. Wines obtained were subjected to chemical and sensory analysis. The comparison between the two products highlighted differences due to the fer- menting strains employed. The vineyard environment was found to strongly influence the composition of yeast communities, thus, confirming the theory of ‘terr- oir’ on the expression of wines. Moreover, vineyard inhabiting birds were in part responsible for the dis- semination of fermentative yeasts during their feedin

Schizophrenia, considered from the beginning as a clinical syndrome that affects different processes such as thinking, emotions, movements, and behaviour, as well as cognitive aspects such as attention, memory, language and especially the executive functions, is an entity that has arisen the interest of many health professionals. The objective of the present study was to assess the above mentioned functions in patients who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and later verify if there was a relation with their intellectual quotient. The sample for this research was composed of 30 patients with no evidence of previous mental retardation, who had studied for at least three years and who were receiving the suitable pharmacological treatment. The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) was administered to assess the abilities involved in the executive function, and the Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), to determine the verbal, manipulative and global intellectual quotient (IQ). The research results showed that the patients presented a global deterioration in each one of the abilities involved in the executive function and were located within the rank of mental deficiency in the intelligence scale, thus confirming that although patients showed deterioration of the executive functions and a low level of intellectual quotient, there is no correlation between these two variables

A new method for proportioning recycled aggregates concrete (RAC) is used to check its feasibility under the Spanish context. First, an extensive experimental campaign has been done, with the purpose of check and analyze the applicability of the EMV method with two Spanish recycled concrete aggregates (RCA). The aim of the second part of the investigation, was to elaborate an adaptation of the EMV method to Bolomey methodology (1), using a 20% weight replacement of coarse natural aggregates (NA) for RCA, and so, with this, comply with the Spanish Instruction for Structural Concrete (EHE 2008). Slump, air content, fresh and hardened densities, compressive strength and modulus of elasticity were determined and analyzed, in order to check the concrete properties. Finally, it was observed that, the EMV method is viable, and its adaptation, results in concrete mixes with similar or better properties than the natural aggregate concrete and RAC conventionally prepared.

The Relationship Between Instructional Delivery And Student Engagement In Selected Classrooms: A Cross-Case Analysis

Student engagement is an essential component to student learning. Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) has focused on providing schools with a unified approach to delivering quality classroom instruction. Despite the alignment and commonalities present, underlying issues still need further investigation. Discrepancies within student proficiency and learning gains exist across schools throughout the district. The purpose of the study was to investigate what patterns exist among fourth- and fifth-grade teachers across four schools within the district concerning the use of instructional practices and how these practices relate to levels of student engagement. This study investigated the relationship between student engagement, instructional delivery, and student achievement through a mixed-methods, comparative case analysis. Data were collected through classroom observations of sixteen teachers working in four MDCPS schools. A convergent mixed methods design facilitated a single-phase approach for simultaneously collecting qualitative and quantitative data. Observations provided correlations between High-Order Learning Tasks and Authentic Learning as well as Explicit Instruction with Connecting to Prior Knowledge and Providing Feedback. The primary instructional strategy used was teacher questioning. Furthermore, Student Engagement yielded varied degrees of correlation in association to the Instructional Delivery while compared to the Student Engagement indicators which generated weak correlations. Additional research is needed to identify which instructional strategies may predict higher levels of student engagement in the classroom as well as other observational tools that corroborate various forms of engagement. Professional development in the areas of Explicit Instruction, Use of Questioning, Providing Feedback, and Use of Technology is critical to building teacher capacity
