    Equilibrium and off-equilibrium simulations of the 4d Gaussian spin glass

    In this paper we study the on and off-equilibrium properties of the four dimensional Gaussian spin glass. In the static case we determine with more precision that in previous simulations both the critical temperature as well as the critical exponents. In the off-equilibrium case we settle the general form of the autocorrelation function, and show that is possible to obtain dynamically, for the first time, a value for the order parameter.Comment: 16 pages and 13 figures, uses epsfig.sty and rotate.sty.     Functional role of biofouling linked to aquaculture facilities in Mediterranean enclosed locations

    Biofouling is generally considered a serious threat for human coastal activities such as aquaculture, and the ecological role of fouling organisms associated with fish-farm cages remains one of the most debated topics in the ecological field. However, although biofouling may cause significant problems related to human health, environmental impact and financial losses, in the past decade there has been an increasing interest in developing methods to promote the growth of biofouling on artificial structures as a strategy to mitigate human impacts and reduce the organic enrichment caused by net-cage fish farming. Here we investigated the filtration activity of biofouling assemblages colonizing artificial substrata located within a harbor. The main objective of the study was to determine if and how changes in composition and functioning of biofouling may be affected by hypoxic conditions that periodically occur within the port site selected for this study. To this purpose, artificial panels were used as biofouling collectors and were brought back to the laboratory seasonally where they were divided in 3 subgroups and acclimated at 3 different oxygen levels to mimic the naturally occurring oxygenic conditions. Clearance and respiration rates of each community were measured 6 and 24 h after the beginning of each treatment. Regardless of experimental conditions, performance of the communities was affected by the seasonality and the amount of biomass recruiting on the panels, mainly composed of crustaceans, ascidians, polychaetes, seaweeds and several introduced species. Our study demonstrated that, in particular cases, fouling assemblages linked to aquaculture facilities may contribute to reducing environmental impact and at the same time may serve as input for their re-use in different disciplines

    Meiofaunal diversityand nematode assemblages in two submarine caves of a mediterranean marine protected area

    Submarine caves are environments of great ecological interest because of the occurrence of peculiar conditions, such as the attenuation of light and reduced water turnover, which can determine oligotrophic conditions from the entrance to the interior part of the cave. These environmental gradients may influence the distribution of the communities inhabiting submarine caves. In this study we investigated the meiofaunal community and nematode assemblages from the sediments inside and outside two submarine caves in Ustica Island Marine Protected Area (southwest Italy): Grotta Falconiera and Grotta dei Gamberi. Consistently with a general pattern of distribution reported by several studies on benthic organisms, our results showed a decrease in the abundance and changes in the taxa composition of the meiofaunal community along the exterior-interior axis of the caves, also highlighting the dissimilarity between the dark and semi-dark communities. We found a significant influence of the availability of organic matter (i.e. phytopigment concentrations) on the distribution and composition of both the meiofauna and the nematode community inside the caves. Different nematode assemblages characterized the inside and the outside of the two caves, with species occurring exclusively in the sediment of both caves, particularly in the dark portions, and completely absent in the external sediments. Environmental features of submarine caves may affect food resources inside the caves and consequently trophic nematode assemblages. Our results showed a difference in feeding strategies between nematodes inhabiting the caves and those living outside, suggesting that in the two caves investigated, bacteria might represent the most important food source for nematodes

    Feedback-error learning control for powered assistive devices

    Active orthoses (AOs) are becoming relevant for user-oriented training in gait rehabilitation. This implies efficient responses of AO's low-level controllers with short time modeling for medical applications. This thesis investigates, in an innovative way, the performance of Feedback-Error Learning (FEL) control to time-effectively adapt the AOs' responses to user-oriented trajectories and changes in the dynamics due to the interaction with the user. FEL control comprises a feedback PID controller and a neural network feedforward controller to promptly learn the inverse dynamics of two AOs. It was carried out experiments with able-bodied subjects walking on a treadmill and considering external disturbances to user-AO interaction. Results showed that the FEL control effectively tracked the user-oriented trajectory with position errors between 5% to 7%, and with a mean delay lower than 25 ms. Compared to a single PID control, the FEL control decreased by 16.5% and 90.7% the position error and delay, respectively. Moreover, the feedforward controller was able to learn the inverse dynamics of the two AOs and adapt to variations in the user-oriented trajectories, such as speed and angular range, while the feedback controller compensated for random disturbances.     Di era modern (era industri 4.0), drone atau pesawat udara tanpa awak (PUTA) menjadi salah satu peralatan yang dapat digunakan untuk menunjang berbagai aktifitas, diantaranya bidang fotografi, videografi, promosi, dan juga ilmu pengetahuan pada berbagai bidang keilmuan. Penggunaan teknologi drone memiliki berbagai macam kelebihan yang tidak dimiliki oleh peralatan lainnya, yaitu efisiensi waktu, fleksibilitas, dan mampu melakukan pemotretan kondisi lahan secara aktual dengan resolusi yang sangat tinggi. Organisasi Mahasiswa Pecinta Alam (MAPALA) merupakan salah satu wadah untuk menyalurkan minat dan bakat mahasiswa yang berfungsi sebagai sarana pengembangan pribadi, sosialisasi, dan kesadaran akan lingkungan. Kelompok pecinta alam mengisi kegiatannya dengan melakukan kegiatan di alam bebas yang bersifat sosial serta pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Oleh karena itu, dukungan keahlian penggunaan teknologi drone akan sangat membantu dalam pelaksanaan kegiatan-kegiatan yang akan dilakukan. Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pengetahuan dan keahlian pendukung dalam pemanfaatan teknologi berupa penggunaan dan pengoperasian drone pada MAPALA Undana. Pelaksanaan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini menggunakan metode penyampaian langsung untuk menjelaskan materi regulasi, pengertian dan jenis-jenis drone, bagian-bagian drone, prosedur persiapan penerbangan drone, serta menggunakan metode pembelajaran yang berpusat pada murid (student centered learning) dengan menggunakan media simulator penggunaan drone. Sasaran program mengikuti kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini dengan aktif dan komunikatif dikarenakan materi yang disampaikan merupakan hal yang baru bagi mereka. Penyampaian materi didukung oleh media berupa wahana drone secara langsung yang diperkenalkan kepada sasaran program dengan diakhiri oleh praktik penggunaan dan pengoperasian drone dengan tampilan nyata dari simulator

    Steam reforming on transition-metal carbides from density-functional theory

    A screening study of the steam reforming reaction (CH_4 + H_2O -> CO + 3H_2) on early transition-metal carbides (TMC's) is performed by means of density-functional theory calculations. The set of considered surfaces includes the alpha-Mo_2C(100) surfaces, the low-index (111) and (100) surfaces of TiC, VC, and delta-MoC, and the oxygenated alpha-Mo_2C(100) and TMC(111) surfaces. It is found that carbides provide a wide spectrum of reactivities towards the steam reforming reaction, from too reactive via suitable to too inert. The reactivity is discussed in terms of the electronic structure of the clean surfaces. Two surfaces, the delta-MoC(100) and the oxygen passivated alpha-Mo_2C(100) surfaces, are identified as promising steam reforming catalysts. These findings suggest that carbides provide a playground for reactivity tuning, comparable to the one for pure metals.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    A critical review of the formation of mono- and dicarboxylated metabolic intermediates of alkylphenol polyethoxylates during wastewater treatment and their environmental significance

Copyright @ 2010 Taylor & Francis.Alkylphenoxyacetic acids, the metabolic biodegradation products of alkylphenol ethoxylates, are commonly found in wastewaters and sewage effluents. These persistent hydrophilic derivatives possess intrinsic estrogenic activity, which can mimic natural hormones. Their concentrations increase through the sewage treatment works as a result of biodegradation and biotransformation, and when discharged can disrupt endocrine function in fish. These acidic metabolites represent the dominant alkylphenolic compounds found in wastewater effluent and their presence is cause for concern as, potentially, through further biotransformation and biodegradation, they can act as sources of nonylphenol, which is toxic and estrogenic. The authors aim to assess the mechanisms of formation as well as elimination of alkylphenoxyacetic acids within conventional sewage treatment works with the emphasis on the activated sludge process. In addition, they evaluate the various factors influencing their degradation and formation in laboratory scale and full-scale systems. The environmental implications of these compounds are considered, as is the need for tertiary treatment processes for their removal

    Determination of the b quark mass at the M_Z scale with the DELPHI detector at LEP

    An experimental study of the normalized three-jet rate of b quark events with respect to light quarks events (light= \ell \equiv u,d,s) has been performed using the CAMBRIDGE and DURHAM jet algorithms. The data used were collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP on the Z peak from 1994 to 2000. The results are found to agree with theoretical predictions treating mass corrections at next-to-leading order. Measurements of the b quark mass have also been performed for both the b pole mass: M_b and the b running mass: m_b(M_Z). Data are found to be better described when using the running mass. The measurement yields: m_b(M_Z) = 2.85 +/- 0.18 (stat) +/- 0.13 (exp) +/- 0.19 (had) +/- 0.12 (theo) GeV/c^2 for the CAMBRIDGE algorithm. This result is the most precise measurement of the b mass derived from a high energy process. When compared to other b mass determinations by experiments at lower energy scales, this value agrees with the prediction of Quantum Chromodynamics for the energy evolution of the running mass. The mass measurement is equivalent to a test of the flavour independence of the strong coupling constant with an accuracy of 7 permil.Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, Accepted by Eur. Phys. J.
