    No Initial Elevation on Personality Self-Reports in an Online Convenience Sample

    Research shows that people’s self-reports may be biased by an initial elevation phenomenon in which ratings are higher the first time that people take a survey as compared to the second and subsequent times. Apart from the fact that this phenomenon exists, and that it might bias ratings for negative subjective experiences more strongly than positive ones, little else is known. In the present study, we examined whether the initial elevation phenomenon occurs for commonly used trait measures, such as ratings on personality inventories and life satisfaction. We hypothesized that the initial elevation phenomenon may be associated with the (un)desirability of the content of the self-report items such that scores for undesirable facets would show initial elevation and scores for desirable facets would show the reverse. We tested this in an online convenience sample (N = 3,329) using 5 facets of a personality inventory and a single item measure of life satisfaction. Our hypotheses were not supported. Our findings suggest that at least for online convenience samples, ratings on personality inventories and life satisfaction are not strongly impacted by initial elevation

    Tissue-derived proinflammatory effect of adenosine A2B receptor in lung ischemia–reperfusion injury

    ObjectiveIschemia–reperfusion injury after lung transplantation remains a major source of morbidity and mortality. Adenosine receptors have been implicated in both pro- and anti-inflammatory roles in ischemia–reperfusion injury. This study tests the hypothesis that the adenosine A2B receptor exacerbates the proinflammatory response to lung ischemia–reperfusion injury.MethodsAn in vivo left lung hilar clamp model of ischemia–reperfusion was used in wild-type C57BL6 and adenosine A2B receptor knockout mice, and in chimeras created by bone marrow transplantation between wild-type and adenosine A2B receptor knockout mice. Mice underwent sham surgery or lung ischemia–reperfusion (1 hour ischemia and 2 hours reperfusion). At the end of reperfusion, lung function was assessed using an isolated buffer-perfused lung system. Lung inflammation was assessed by measuring proinflammatory cytokine levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and neutrophil infiltration was assessed via myeloperoxidase levels in lung tissue.ResultsCompared with wild-type mice, lungs of adenosine A2B receptor knockout mice were significantly protected after ischemia–reperfusion, as evidenced by significantly reduced pulmonary artery pressure, increased lung compliance, decreased myeloperoxidase, and reduced proinflammatory cytokine levels (tumor necrosis factor-α; interleukin-6; keratinocyte chemoattractant; regulated on activation, normal T-cell expressed and secreted; and monocyte chemotactic protein-1). Adenosine A2B receptor knockout→adenosine A2B receptor knockout (donor→recipient) and wild-type→ adenosine A2B receptor knockout, but not adenosine A2B receptor knockout→wild-type, chimeras showed significantly improved lung function after ischemia–reperfusion.ConclusionsThese results suggest that the adenosine A2B receptor plays an important role in mediating lung inflammation after ischemia–reperfusion by stimulating cytokine production and neutrophil chemotaxis. The proinflammatory effects of adenosine A2B receptor seem to be derived by adenosine A2B receptor activation primarily on resident pulmonary cells and not bone marrow-derived cells. Adenosine A2B receptor may provide a therapeutic target for prevention of ischemia–reperfusion-related graft dysfunction in lung transplant recipients

    High-dose Vitamin D Supplementation in Multiple Sclerosis - Results From the Randomized EVIDIMS (Efficacy of Vitamin D Supplementation in Multiple Sclerosis) Trial

    Background: Epidemiological, preclinical, and non-interventional studies link vitamin D (VD) serum levels and disease activity in multiple sclerosis (MS). It is unclear whether high-dose VD supplementation can be used as an intervention to reduce disease activity. Objectives: The study aimed to compare the effects of every other day high- (20,400 IU) versus low-dose (400 IU) cholecalciferol supplementation on clinical and imaging markers of disease activity in patients with relapsing-remitting MS or clinically isolated syndrome. Methods: The EVIDIMS (efficacy of vitamin D supplementation in multiple sclerosis) trial was a multicentre randomized/stratified actively controlled explorative phase 2a pilot trial with a double-blind intervention period of 18 months, add on to interferon-ÎČ1b. Results: Fifty-three patients were randomized, and 41 patients completed the study. Cholecalciferol supplementation was well tolerated and safe in both arms. After 18 months, clinical (relapse rates, disability progression) and radiographical (T2-weighted lesion development, contrast-enhancing lesion development, brain atrophy) did not differ between both treatment arms. Post-study power calculations suggested that the sample size was too low to prove the hypothesis. Conclusions: The results neither support nor disprove a therapeutic benefit of high-dose VD supplementation but provide a basis for sound sample size estimations in future confirmatory studies. www.clinicaltrials.gov/NCT01440062

    A case of pelvic peritoneal damage by laparoscopy instruments revealed under scanning electron microscope (SEM)

    Introduction: The role of peritoneal membrane in human has been known in transport of fluids and electrolytes, host defense and reduce friction between bowels and other organs for a long time. This serosal layer consists of a single layer of mesothelial cells resting on basement membrane and submesothelial connective tissue with cell populations and structural proteins. In last decades, human pelvic peritoneum has been studied by using scanning electron microscopy in many conditions to diagnose the diseases especially in endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain and etc. In this study, microstructural changes caused by the surgeon due to unintentionally technical problems in tissue dissections is reported. This article presents unintentionally ultrastructural changes on the pelvic peritoneum during laparoscopic surgery by instruments that can lead to errors in diagnosis and understanding of the disease process for pathologist Case presentation: Two pieces of involved peritoneal tissues with size of 7Ăƒïżœ7 mm and two pieces of apparently normal peritoneum were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy in a patient with chronic pelvic pain and suspected to endometriosis. Conclusion: According to inadvertent damage of laparoscopic instruments to evaluate fine tissues such as peritoneum, this very simple but important tip should be noted during laparoscopic peritoneal tissue dissections for diagnostic and ultrastructural investigations. © 2016, Canadian Medical Association.     Distributed Parallel Cooperative Coevolutionary Multi-Objective Large-Scale Immune Algorithm for Deployment of Wireless Sensor Networks

    Using immune algorithms is generally a time-intensive process especially for problems with a large number of variables. In this paper, we propose a distributed parallel cooperative coevolutionary multi-objective large-scale immune algorithm that is implemented using the message passing interface (MPI). The proposed algorithm is composed of three layers: objective, group and individual layers. First, for each objective in the multi-objective problem to be addressed, a subpopulation is used for optimization, and an archive population is used to optimize all the objectives. Second, the large number of variables are divided into several groups. Finally, individual evaluations are allocated across many core processing units, and calculations are performed in parallel. Consequently, the computation time is greatly reduced. The proposed algorithm integrates the idea of immune algorithms, which tend to explore sparse areas in the objective space and use simulated binary crossover for mutation. The proposed algorithm is employed to optimize the 3D terrain deployment of a wireless sensor network, which is a self-organization network. In experiments, compared with several state-of-the-art multi-objective evolutionary algorithms the Cooperative Coevolutionary Generalized Differential Evolution 3, the Cooperative Multi-objective Differential Evolution and the Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm III, the proposed algorithm addresses the deployment optimization problem efficiently and effectively

    Treatment of hemangiomas in children using a Nd:YAG laser in conjunction with ice cooling of the epidermis: techniques and results

    BACKGROUND: Hemangiomas are the most common type of congenital anomaly in childhood. Although many resolve spontaneously, intervention is required when their growth could damage vital adjacent structures. Various therapeutic approaches to childhood hemangiomas with different types of laser have been described previously. The objective of this study was to determine whether the cooling of the epidermis during irradiation of hemangiomas with a Nd:YAG laser prevents thermal damage and decreases the number of sessions required to treat these lesions. METHODS: Between 1993 and 2001, 110 patients aged 3 months to 4 years, with cutaneous hemangiomas were treated with a Nd:YAG laser. The lesion was cooled with ice prior to, during, and after the irradiation. During each session the laser beam passed through the pieces of ice. The laser power was between 35–45 W with a pulse length of 2–10 seconds. RESULTS: After 6 months of follow-up, from the first session of laser treatment, total resolution was obtained in 72 (65.5%) patients. A second or third session followed in 30 out of 38 patients in which, the initial results were good, moderate, or poor. The parents of the remaining eight children refused this second session and these patients excluded from the study Complications were seen in nine (8.8%) patients. One patient had postoperative bleeding which stopped spontaneously, while atrophic scars occurred in six (5.8%) patients, and hypertrophic scars in two (1.9%) patients. CONCLUSIONS: Nd:YAG laser irradiation in conjunction with ice protection of the epidermis produces good cosmetic results for the treatment of cutaneous hemangiomas in children, and decreases the number of sessions for treatment of these lesions

    Non-Gaussian power grid frequency fluctuations characterized by Levy-stable laws and superstatistics

    Multiple types of fluctuations impact the collective dynamics of power grids and thus challenge their robust operation. Fluctuations result from processes as different as dynamically changing demands, energy trading and an increasing share of renewable power feed-in. Here we analyse principles underlying the dynamics and statistics of power grid frequency fluctuations. Considering frequency time series for a range of power grids, including grids in North America, Japan and Europe, we find a strong deviation from Gaussianity best described as LĂ©vy-stable and q-Gaussian distributions. We present a coarse framework to analytically characterize the impact of arbitrary noise distributions, as well as a superstatistical approach that systematically interprets heavy tails and skewed distributions. We identify energy trading as a substantial contribution to today’s frequency fluctuations and effective damping of the grid as a controlling factor enabling reduction of fluctuation risks, with enhanced effects for small power grids

    Practicing a Musical Instrument in Childhood is Associated with Enhanced Verbal Ability and Nonverbal Reasoning

    Background: In this study we investigated the association between instrumental music training in childhood and outcomes closely related to music training as well as those more distantly related. Methodology/Principal Findings: Children who received at least three years (M = 4.6 years) of instrumental music training outperformed their control counterparts on two outcomes closely related to music (auditory discrimination abilities and fine motor skills) and on two outcomes distantly related to music (vocabulary and nonverbal reasoning skills). Duration of training also predicted these outcomes. Contrary to previous research, instrumental music training was not associated with heightened spatial skills, phonemic awareness, or mathematical abilities. Conclusions/Significance: While these results are correlational only, the strong predictive effect of training duration suggests that instrumental music training may enhance auditory discrimination, fine motor skills, vocabulary, and nonverba
