Wilson Cano, intérprete da questão regional e urbana do Brasil

    Get PDF
This article is a tribute by representatives from four generations of researchers, who were taught and supervised by Professor Wilson Cano (1937-2020). The text follows an academic trajectory that bequeathed a fundamental contribution towards the understanding of regional and urban issues in Brazil. The aim is to highlight the most distinctive aspects of his studies, based on a dynamic-historical and contradictory conception of capitalist development and the regional and urban repercussions that have resulted from such a process. Under the aegis of the historical-structural method, we identify, within his analyses, a rigorous investigation into the formation of regional complexes, of the movements of spatial concentration and deconcentration driven by industrialization, and of the determinations of the land issue for urbanization. He sought to situate the regional and urban debate within the context of the need to push forward a national development project, without which, the regions and cities of Brazil would become subjugated to the determinants of neoliberalism and to the loss of the nation’s sovereignty.

Evaluation of residual strength of polymeric yarns subjected to previous impact loads

The discovery of oil fields in deep and ultra-deep waters provided an opportunity to evaluate the use of  synthetic ropes, complementarily or alternatively to traditional steel-based mooring lines in offshore units, mainly because of the former’s lower specific weight. Considering the series of complex dynamic-mechanical mainly axial loads to which these structures may be subjected, originated from different sources, such as wind, water current, tide, etc., there may be cases when at least one of these lines may possibly face an abrupt, shock-like axial load of considerably larger magnitude. The goal of the present study is to evaluate the residual tensile strength of three different synthetic yarns  (polyester, and two grades of high modulus polyethylene) after exposure to such axial impact loads. It was observed that, for the tested materials, polyester is the one with the largest impact resistance to the conditions evaluated herein, mainly because of its comparatively greater energy absorption properties

Influence of igneous intrusions on coal flotation feasibility : the case of Moatize Mine, Mozambique

    Get PDF
In this study, the influence on the properties of coal caused by proximity with an igneous intrusion in the Moatize mine was evaluated, together with the possibility of beneficiating such coal in the flotation circuit of the plant. For this purpose, extensive characterizations of samples collected at different distances from the intrusion were carried out, followed by a lab-scale replication and analysis of the flotation conditions used in the Moatize plant. The results showed that coal was negatively affected by the closeness to the dyke, with it being unfeasible to beneficiate coal at a distance of 2 m from the geological contact. However, for a 20 m distance, it proved possible to achieve yields higher than 77% with ash contents below 10%, depending on the reagent system used

OBJECTIVE: Relate the main tendinous and ligamentous structures attached in the coracoid process, correlating it to several levels of osteotomy and describing the involved structures. METHODS: Thirty shoulders were dissected. The coracoid process with mainly inserted anatomic structures was dissected, and five levels of osteotomy (1.0; 1.5; 2.0; 2.5; 3.0 cm) were made from the apex of the process and the mainly involved structures were recorded. RESULTS: In osteotomies of 1.0 cm, in 100% of the cases only the conjoint tendon (CT). In osteotomies of 1.5 cm there were 63.33% of cases involved with the CT and the Pectoralis minor (PMi), in 20% of cases only the CT, and in 16.66% the CT, PMi, and the coracohumeral ligament (CUL). In osteotomies of 2.0 cm, in 80% of the shoulders, the osteotomies embraced the CT, PMi and the CUL, and in 20% only the CT and the PMi were involved. In the osteotomies of 2.5cm there was involvement of the CT, PMi and CUL in 100% of cases. In the osteotomies of 3.0cm, six cases (20%) have presented an injury on the trapezoid ligament, and in 100% of these osteotomies, the osteotomized distal fragment had embraced the CT, PMi, CUL. CONCLUSION: The knowledge of anatomic structures inserted and involved in the osteotomies cuts of the coracoid process is very importan to lead with osteotomies performed in the treatment techniques of the coracoid process. Osteotomies of 3.0 cm can injure the trapezoid ligament.OBJETIVO: Estudar as principais estruturas tendinosas e ligamentares inseridas no processo coracoide, correlacionando com diversos níveis de osteotomia e relatando as estruturas envolvidas no fragmento distai osteotomizado.

Optimization of water leaching of chlorides from aluminum salt slag

    Get PDF
Aluminum recycling generates large amounts of hazardous wastes, known as salt slags, consisting mainly of oxides, metallic aluminum, and salt fluxes. Water leaching is a common technique used for salt removal, being a decisive operation due to water usage and the need to achieve sufficient salt recovery. In this study, water leaching tests under varied operational conditions (water type, slag particle size, solid content, and leaching time) were carried out in salt slag samples obtained from a Brazilian aluminum scrap melting company. Leaching efficiency was assessed by the % chlorine leached. The optimal leaching condition, defined as the one that resulted in the highest chloride removal from the slag together with appropriate operational conditions (larger viable slag size, lower leaching time, etc.), was identified for a slag size below 2.8 mm, 30 wt% of solids in pulp, and a leaching time of 90 min. The results showed that it was possible to recover more than 92% of the salts initially contained in the raw slag, resulting in a leached material with less than 2.5% salts. The recovered salt characteristics showed potential for recycling and could be re-mixed to the salt flux used for aluminum melting. The possibility of achieving higher efficiencies and lower water consumption during leaching was also discussed, as was a preliminary flowsheet for salt slag treatment

OBJECTIVE To identify gender differences in social support dimensions’ effect on adults’ leisure-time physical activity maintenance, type, and time. METHODS Longitudinal study of 1,278 non-faculty public employees at a university in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Southeastern Brazil. Physical activity was evaluated using a dichotomous question with a two-week reference period, and further questions concerning leisure-time physical activity type (individual or group) and time spent on the activity. Social support was measured with the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Scale. For the analysis, logistic regression models were adjusted separately by gender. RESULTS A multinomial logistic regression showed an association between material support and individual activities among women (OR = 2.76; 95%CI 1.2;6.5). Affective support was associated with time spent on leisure-time physical activity only among men (OR = 1.80; 95%CI 1.1;3.2). CONCLUSIONS All dimensions of social support that were examined influenced either the type of, or the time spent on, leisure-time physical activity. In some social support dimensions, the associations detected varied by gender.

    Get PDF
The objective of this work was to evaluate carbon and nitrogen mineralization in the soil after the application of composts produced in an automated composting plant, using pig slurry (PS) with and without the addition of retorted oil shale (ROS) and dicyandiamide (DCD) during composting. Laboratory studies were carried out for 180 days on two soils with contrasting characteristics: sandy-loam Typic Paludalf and clay Rhodic Hapludox, which were managed for more than 10 years under a no-tillage system. The composts were thoroughly mixed with the soils. The mineralization of the C and N from the compost was evaluated by measuring continuously CO2 emissions and periodically mineral N (NH4+ + NO3-) content in the soils, respectively. The mineralization of the C from the compost without ROS and DCD was higher in the sandy-loam soil (20.5%) than in the clay soil (13.9%). Similarly, 19.4% of the total N from the compost was mineralized in the sandy-loam soil and 10.9% in the clay soil. The presence of ROS in the compost reduced C mineralization by 54%, compared with the treatment without additives, in the sandy-loam soil and caused net N immobilization in both soils during incubation. The addition of DCD during PS composting did not affect the mineralization of the C and N from the compost in both soils. The addition of ROS during the composting of PS favors the retention of the C from the compost in the soil, especially in the sandy-loam one, but results in a net N immobilization.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a mineralização de carbono e nitrogênio no solo após a aplicação de compostos produzidos numa planta de compostagem automatizada, tendo-se utilizado dejetos líquidos de suínos (DLS), com e sem a adição de xisto retortado (XR) e dicianodiamida (DCD) durante a compostagem.
