In this paper we debate the intentionality of designers and developers in their videogames propositions. We start by presenting the concept of artistic intentionality (based on Heidegger), which, by definition, includes the affirmation and negation of the tradition of Art (Gadamer). Then, we extend the discussion to the being-game, presenting definitions of what is videogame (Salen and Zimmerman; Juul; Aarseth and Calleja) and argue that videogames must be designed as a game and a non-game simultaneously, because this is necessary to renew and consolidate this young tradition. That discussion is based on historical debates – as about indie vs. mainstream games (Ferreira; Jahn- -Sudmann; Flanagan) and the Scratchware Manifesto – making a connection between Videogames and Art.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Dental Implants in Pediatric Dentistry: A Literature Review.

    Get PDF
The use of osseointegrated implants has been increasingly widespread in the adult population, however in children there is a certain lack in the literature on the application of this technique. The bone growth and development factor must be well analyzed, and the pediatric dentist must be able to suggest the use of this treatment option for oral rehabilitation, when necessary. This article discusses bone growth and development of the craniofacial region, presents relevant aspects of the literature and discusses the use of this technique in pediatric patients

Recently, several applications using concepts related to virtual reality has been proposed to help on solving issues of great interest in Nuclear Engineering. Among them are power plant's control rooms simulators; measurement of the estimated radiation dose in a nuclear power plant; use of game engines to create virtual environments to support evacuation planning of buildings and circulation in areas subjected to radiation; development of a man - machine interface based on speech recognition; virtual control tables for simulation of nuclear power plants; evacuation plans support; security teams training and evaluation of physical protection barriers; ergonomic evaluation of control rooms, and other ones. Many of these applications are developed at Instituto de Engenharia Nuclear (IEN), having their results published in form of articles in periodicals and conferences. This article presents a review of some of these studies showing the evolution in the use of these concepts, describing some of its results and showing prospects for future applications that can make use of virtual reality technology

BackgroundTestosterone deficiency in patients with heart failure (HF) is associated with decreased exercise capacity and mortality; however, its impact on hospital readmission rate is uncertain. Furthermore, the relationship between testosterone deficiency and sympathetic activation is unknown.ObjectiveWe investigated the role of testosterone level on hospital readmission and mortality rates as well as sympathetic nerve activity in patients with HF.MethodsTotal testosterone (TT) and free testosterone (FT) were measured in 110 hospitalized male patients with a left ventricular ejection fraction < 45% and New York Heart Association classification IV. The patients were placed into low testosterone (LT; n = 66) and normal testosterone (NT; n = 44) groups. Hypogonadism was defined as TT < 300 ng/dL and FT < 131 pmol/L. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) was recorded by microneurography in a subpopulation of 27 patients.ResultsLength of hospital stay was longer in the LT group compared to in the NT group (37 ± 4 vs. 25 ± 4 days; p = 0.008). Similarly, the cumulative hazard of readmission within 1 year was greater in the LT group compared to in the NT group (44% vs. 22%, p = 0.001). In the single-predictor analysis, TT (hazard ratio [HR], 2.77; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.58-4.85; p = 0.02) predicted hospital readmission within 90 days. In addition, TT (HR, 4.65; 95% CI, 2.67-8.10; p = 0.009) and readmission within 90 days (HR, 3.27; 95% CI, 1.23-8.69; p = 0.02) predicted increased mortality. Neurohumoral activation, as estimated by MSNA, was significantly higher in the LT group compared to in the NT group (65 ± 3 vs. 51 ± 4 bursts/100 heart beats; p < 0.001).ConclusionThese results support the concept that LT is an independent risk factor for hospital readmission within 90 days and increased mortality in patients with HF. Furthermore, increased MSNA was observed in patients with LT

This article aims to address the underlying challenges and opportunities associated with digital transformation for development. One intends to identify the main impacts of digital technologies in developing countries and how it is possible to extend their benefits to mitigate the digital divide and enable development. As such, based on a review, interpretation, and synthesis of both digital transformation and ICT4D1 literature and through a structured narrative literature review, this study proposes a Digital Transformation for Development (DT4D) conceptual model. Grounded on a critical interpretive approach, this model pinpoints how digital transformation scholarship has focused on organizations and overlooked the potential of existing digital technologies to enable development at a societal level. That way, the main objective of the model developed is to investigate the role and impact of digital transformation in supporting development at a societal level and propose avenues for future research

Prevalence of morphological and structural changes in the stylohyoid chain

    Get PDF
Total or partial calcification of the stylohyoid chain, elongation of the stylohyoid process of the temporal bone and/or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament are usually incidental radiographic findings. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of morphological and structural changes within the stylohyoid chain in 4413 digital panoramic radiographs. The images were evaluated for the presence or absence of changes in the stylohyoid chain by a specialist in dentofacial radiology and the information collected comprised gender, age, side, right and left measurements and classification of the chain side elongated or calcified stylohyoid process, as well as type and pattern of right or left calcification. 275 (6.2%) subjects presented alterations, mostly bilateral, in the stylohyoid chain, being 186 females (67.6%) and 89 males (32.4%), with a higher proportion elongation. Partial calcification was more prevalent than total calcification. The right side was most affected and the frequency of events increased with age. The findings of the present study demonstrate that the commonest alterations in the stylohyoid chain are bilateral, mainly elongation, with a clear trend to increased prevalence with increasing age, presenting a low incidence. Noneless, the clinicians must be aware of these alterations in the routinely radiographic examination

The environmental aspects in the farmer's decision processv : a case study of Rural Taquara Nucleus

It was verified that farmers decide, under the actual economic model, make their decisions focused on the economic results, that is to say, the maximization of profit. In this sense, their decision is made by the logic of obtaining a larger production at the smallest cost making use of available technology and technical assistance, with regard to climatic conditions, obtaining a good quality product, observing market demands, mainly those related to price. The environmental aspects are only observed with priority when they participate or interfere in a direct way in the economic results, otherwise, the actions are summarised to simple practices and procedures considered enough by farmers to solve the problems. The integralization of environmental aspects in the farmers' decision process besides the logic of their decision must consider the role of State as a promoter of changes
