Nigerian Languages, Ethnicity and Formal Education

One of the major concerns of African scholars is the wide linguistic and educational gaps that exist among different ethnic groups within the same country. To bridge the gaps between inter-ethnic class and struggle, there is a need to put into consideration, the linguistic and educational set up of the country. Overall, this paper examines Nigerian languages, ethnicity and formal educational practices. It contributes to the very large literature on the conformity, formation and the question of identity, culture and language in Nigerian formal education. This work concurrently links linguistic identity to educational choice in Nigeria. The work concludes that ethnicization has become the highest level of threat to national integration thereby causing a lot of wobble in our democracy. One can then deduce that ethnic sentiments spring from man’s innate (linguistic) and educational tendency to display allegiance to a particular group. The work suggests a review of the National Policy on education. The study also suggests ways of managing ethnicity and developing educationally and culturally through interaction with government agencies that disseminate policies through various indigenous languages. It also recommends the sustainability of functional education.

The paper presents the vulnerabilities of cloudstorage and various possible attacks exploiting thesevulnerabilities that relate to cloud security, which is one of thechallenging features of cloud computing. The attacks areclassified into three broad categories of which the socialnetworking based attacks are the recent attacks which areevolving out of existing technologies such as P2P file sharing. The study is extended to available defence mechanisms andcurrent research areas of cloud storage. Based on the study, simple cloud storage is implemented and the major aspectssuch as login mechanism, encryption techniques and keymanagement techniques are evaluated against the presentedattacks. The study proves that the cloud storage consumers arestill dependent on the trust and contracts agreed with theservice provider and there is no hard way of proven defensemechanisms against the attacks. Further down, the emergingtechnologies could possibly break down all key basedencryption mechanisms

The ambivalent relation between nationalism and national language: the cases of the Republic of Ireland and Wales

International audienceThe ambivalent relation between nationalism and national language : the case ofthe Republic of Ireland and Wales.Nationalist movements of groups or ethnic minorites within a nation-state arefrequently associated with cultural and linguistic demands for recognition.Whether these claims concern political autonomy, self-determination orindependence, in a climate of negociations or armed conflict, language lies atthe heart of the discussions. Its connection with an established national identitystable through time should meet all the criteria for securing such a recognition. And indeed cultural and linguistic freedoms are protected by the 1948 UniversalDeclaration of Human Rights, on a par with freedom of speech. In the so-called “English-speaking” sphere of influence, Ireland acceded topolitical independence against a backdrop of cultural and linguistic demands, somuch so that the Irish (Gaelic) language is the first official language of the landaccording to its Constitution. This can be contrasted with the situation in Wales, where secessionist claims are few, the British political institutions have acceptedthat Welsh should be a language of education and of the local administration. Thepresent contribution aims to explore the paradox according to which nationalismdoes not necessarily rhyme with the actual defense of the minority language. Inthat perspective, issues such as the official status of the language, language policiesand the social use of the language will be analyzed and compared in the Republicof Ireland and in Wales.

This paper aims to explore the relationship between indigenous populations and urban spaces through a case study centrered on the Marubo, a Panoan-speaking people of the Vale do Javari indigenous reservation (Amazonas state, Brazil). The paper investigates the shamanistic and mythological backgrounds mobilized in the comprehension of cities, spacial displacements and relations with alterity. Through the recent contributions of lowland south-american ethnology, this study offers parameters to the analysis of conceptual problems related to the crossing of indigenous and non-indigenous pressupositions about territories, change and difference

Improving the Health of African Americans in the USA: An Overdue Opportunity for Social Justice

    Get PDF
Using a modified social ecological model, we conducted a review of the literature and nationwide statistics on African American health. We discuss the main social determinants of health and main health disparities, risk factors, the leading causes of morbidity and mortality, and access to health services for blacks in the USA. The mechanisms through which social determinants, including racism, exert their deleterious effects on black health are discussed at the macro and individual levels. Incarceration and mental health care issues are highlighted as priorities to be addressed. African Americans remain the least healthy ethnic group in the USA, a somber legacy of years of racial and social injustice and a formidable challenge to equitable health care for all. Systemic causes of suboptimal black health require equally systemic solutions; positive trends in black health indicators seem to be driven by social development programs, economic investment in education, participation of African Americans in policy, and decision-making and expansion of access to health care
