The Learning Theories Profile: A metacognitive tool for reflecting on professional practice
The Learning Theories Profile (LTP) supports professionals to locate various learning theories within four epistemological quadrants of the Matrix of Perspectives. Professionals can use this tool to identify some of the theories they hold and to reflect on the alignment between their espoused theories and theories-in-use. Forty-four Resource Teachers used the LTP and demonstrated that they were guided by a range of theories, most commonly interactive theories. A strong relationship was observed between espoused and in-use theories. Participants’ responses indicated the positive value of the LTP for supporting professionals to analyse and optimise interaction occurring in complex contexts of practice

Our Deep CNN Face Matchers Have Developed Achromatopsia
Modern deep CNN face matchers are trained on datasets containing color
images. We show that such matchers achieve essentially the same accuracy on the
grayscale or the color version of a set of test images. We then consider
possible causes for deep CNN face matchers ``not seeing color''. Popular
web-scraped face datasets actually have 30 to 60\% of their identities with one
or more grayscale images. We analyze whether this grayscale element in the
training set impacts the accuracy achieved, and conclude that it does not.
Further, we show that even with a 100\% grayscale training set, comparable
accuracy is achieved on color or grayscale test images. Then we show that the
skin region of an individual's images in a web-scraped training set exhibit
significant variation in their mapping to color space. This suggests that
color, at least for web-scraped, in-the-wild face datasets, carries limited
identity-related information for training state-of-the-art matchers. Finally,
we verify that comparable accuracy is achieved from training using
single-channel grayscale images, implying that a larger dataset can be used
within the same memory limit, with a less computationally intensive early
layer
Embedding the concept of ecosystems services:The utilisation of ecological knowledge in different policy venues
The concept of ecosystem services is increasingly being promoted by academics and policy makers as a means to protect ecological systems through more informed decision making. A basic premise of this approach is that strengthening the ecological knowledge base will significantly enhance ecosystem health through more sensitive decision making. However, the existing literature on knowledge utilisation, and many previous attempts to improve decision making through better knowledge integration, suggest that producing ‘more knowledge’ is only ever a necessary but insufficient condition for greater policy success. We begin this paper by reviewing what is already known about the relationship between ecological knowledge development and utilisation, before introducing a set of theme issue papers that examine—for the very first time—how this politically and scientifically salient relationship plays out across a number of vital policy venues such as land-use planning, policy-level impact assessment, and cost–benefit analysis. Following a detailed synthesis of the key findings of all the papers, this paper identifies and explores new research and policy challenges in this important and dynamic area of environmental governance
Stylet Penetration Activities by Aphis craccivora (Homoptera: Aphididae) on Plants and Excised Plant Parts of Resistant and Susceptible Cultivars of Cowpea (Leguminosae)
Direct current electrical penetration graphs (DC-EPGs) were used to analyze the stylet penetration activities of cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch, on plants of aphid-resistant (ICV-12) and aphid-susceptible (ICV-1) cultivars of cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walpers. Aphid stylet penetration on whole plants at seedling, flowering, and podding stages were studied in one experiment, and in another experiment excised leaves from seedling plants, excised flowers, and excised pods were tested. Electrical signals depicting the aphid stylet penetration activities on their host plants were amplified, recorded onto a paper chart recorder, and scored for specific waveform patterns. Compared with similar tissues of ICV-1, intact leaves and excised seedling foliage of ICV-12 plants caused severe disruption of aphid stylet penetration activities. This was manifested in frequent penetration attempts that were abruptly terminated or unsustained, and in shorter penetration times, signifying antixenosis resistance in ICV-12. There was reduced occurrence of E waveforms, which represent stylet activity in plant vascular tissues. Also, prior exposure of test aphids to plants of one cultivar did not significantly influence the expected stylet penetration activities on plants of the other cultivar. Application of a value chain approach to understanding white kenkey production, vending and consumption practices in three districts of Ghana
Traditional processing and street vending of foods is a vital activity in the informal sector of the Ghanaian economy and offers livelihood for a large number of traditional food processors. Kenkey is a fermented maize ‘dumpling’ produced by traditional food processors in Ghana. Ga and Fante kenkey have received research attention and there is a lot of scientific information on kenkey production. White kenkey produced from dehulled maize grains is a less known kind of kenkey. A survey was held in three districts of Ghana to study production, vending and consumption of white kenkey and to identify major bottlenecks related to production, which can be addressed in studies to re-package kenkey for a wider market. Questionnaires were designed for producers, vendors and consumers of white kenkey to collate information on Socio-cultural data, processing technologies, frequency of production and consumption, product shelf life, reasons for consumption and quality attributes important to consumers using proportional sampling. The survey was conducted in white kenkey production zones and trade centers. Results showed that production of white kenkey is done on small-scale levels by middle-aged women in households with 10-50 kg of dehulled maize processed into white kenkey, 1-3 times weekly. A third (28%) of the women processed up to 50-100 kg of maize per week. Although 62% of vendors sell 50-100 balls of white kenkey daily, 15% of them sell more than 170 balls. Majority of consumers (45.9%) liked white kenkey because of its convenience (ready-to-eat). Texture and taste were quality attributes desired by kenkey consumers. Producers did not have written records of process controls and product throughputs. Inspite of their cottage nature, production of white kenkey is a profitable employment for producers and vendors and is popular among consumers. Product improvement, process and product characteristics could offer scale-up criteria for development of white kenkey production using standardized procedures for steeping times, steeping temperature and fermentation times.Keywords: maize, white kenkey, value chain, traditional, product development, re-engineerin
Near-surface imaging using coincident seismic and GPR data
This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from "http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com".In many near-surface applications, detailed subsurface characterization is important. Characterization often is obtained using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) or shallow seismic-reflection (SSR) imaging methods, depending upon depth of interest and surficial geology. Each method responds to different physical properties; thus, each may produce different images of the same near-surface volume. By incorporating the two methods, we generated a cross-section of the subsurface at an alluvial test site and identified the depths of three interfaces accurately to ±5 cm. We present here experimental results and examples of SSR and GPR images obtained along the same traverse, showing coincident and noncoincident reflections from multiple interfaces within 3 m of the surface
On the state dependency of fast feedback processes in (palaeo) climate sensitivity
Palaeo data have been frequently used to determine the equilibrium (Charney)
climate sensitivity , and - if slow feedback processes (e.g. land
ice-albedo) are adequately taken into account - they indicate a similar range
as estimates based on instrumental data and climate model results. Most studies
implicitly assume the (fast) feedback processes to be independent of the
background climate state, e.g., equally strong during warm and cold periods.
Here we assess the dependency of the fast feedback processes on the background
climate state using data of the last 800 kyr and a conceptual climate model for
interpretation. Applying a new method to account for background state
dependency, we find K(Wm) using the latest LGM
temperature reconstruction and significantly lower climate sensitivity during
glacial climates. Due to uncertainties in reconstructing the LGM temperature
anomaly, is estimated in the range K(Wm).Comment: submitted to Geophysical Research Letter
Truly reconciled? A dyadic analysis of post-conflict social reintegration in Northern Uganda
In the aftermath of civil war or violent internal conflict, one of the key peacebuilding challenges is the reconciliation of former enemies who are members of the same small-scale societies. A failure of social reintegration may contribute to what is known as a conflict trap. To detect lingering hostile attitudes among a community’s various factions is crucial, but the approaches adopted in previous studies tend to focus on the impact of conflict on one or other aggregated indicator of social cohesion rather than on how violence-affected individuals regard and act towards their fellow community members. Here we demonstrate the value of concentrating on this latter dyadic component of social interactions and we use behavioural experiments and a social tie survey to assess, in an appropriately disaggregated manner, social cohesion in a post-conflict setting in northern Uganda. Whereas in self-reported surveys, ex-combatants appear to be well-connected, active members of their communities, the experiments unveil the continued reluctance of other community members to share or cooperate with them; fewer resources are committed to ex-combatants than to others, which is statistically significant. The dyadic nature of our analysis allows us to detect which groups are more prone to discriminate against ex-combatants, which may help facilitate targeted interventions
