Coarse-grained forms for equations describing the microscopic motion of particles in a fluid

Equations of motion for the microscopic number density ρ^(x,t)\hat{\rho}({\bf x},t) and the momentum density g^(x,t)\hat{\bf g}({\bf x},t) of a fluid have been obtained in the past from the corresponding Langevin equations representing the dynamics of the fluid particles. In the present work we average these exact equations of microscopic dynamics over the local equilibrium distribution to obtain stochastic partial differential equations for the coarse grained densities with smooth spatial and temporal dependence. In particular, we consider Dean's exact balance equation for the microscopic density of a system of interacting Brownian particles to obtain the basic equation of the dynamic density functional theory. In the thermally averaged equation for the coarse grained density ρ(x,t){\rho}({\bf x},t), the related dependence on the bare interaction potential in Dean's equation is converted to that on the corresponding direct correlation functions of the density functional theory.Comment: 10 page

Observations of solar flare gamma-rays and protons

    Get PDF
Solar flare gamma-rays (4 to 7 MeV) and protons (8 to 500 MeV) were simultaneously observed from six flares on 1 Apr., 4 Apr., 27, Apr. 13, May 1981, 1 Feb. and 6 June 1982 by the Hinotori and GMS satellites. The relationship between 4 to 7 MeV gamma-ray fluences and peak 16 to 34 MeV proton fluxes for these flares are analyzed. It does not reveal an apparent correlation between these two parameters. The present result implies that the protons producing gamma-rays and the protons observed near the Earth do not always belong to the same population

Women in Architecture: Learning from the Past to Change the Future

    Get PDF
Until recently the inclusion of women in the history of architecture in America was non-existent. The current pedagogy of architectural programs, internship training, and practice is gender biased, focusing on the male stars of architecture thus creating a male biased narrow definition of success in the profession. This one-sided view of the profession’s history and vision of success is not only inaccurate, but is detrimental to women in the field. Many women, after entering practice and obtaining their licenses, leave the profession as a result. This study reflects on the progression of the profession and summarizes the lives and careers of five historically significant women pioneers in the profession beginning in 1880 through 1980 who were outstanding, not only because they were exceptional women but because they were competent architects. Louise Blanchard Bethune, Marion Mahony, Julia Morgan, Denise Scott Brown, and Beverly Willis were talented, multifaceted architects who created notable architectural projects, established successful selfdefined practices, and have interesting personal stories of their road to success. Women currently in practice have benefitted from the achievements of these historical role models. Architects like Jeanne Gang, Anna Franz, Maya Lin, Monica Ponce de Leon are some of the women in practice today who, like their predecessors, have created their own career paths and do not let obstacles stop them from pursuing their attainment of success. If women in school, training, and practice were exposed to the history of these pioneers, they would realize that they, these pioneers have faced numerous obstacles in their careers and lives and did not let anyone or anything deter them from pursuing their dreams and defining their careers and lives in their own way. The entire architectural profession including education, training, and practice, along with architectural organizations, needs to change and work collaboratively to embrace and promote the true history of the profession that includes both men and women. The profession must progress to best service the twenty-first century society

    Coherence-based three-dimensional imaging spectrometry

Editors:Prathan Buranasiri,Sarun SumriddetchkajornA brief review is presented for recent progress in a fully interferometric technique to obtain a set of spectral components of three-dimensional images for usual polychromatic objects. The review includes a principle of method and experimental demonstrations in which the measured object is regarded as spatially incoherent in each spectral component. We also suggest that some alternative ways to realize the same results having different characteristics based on modified synthetic aperture techniques

Schwinger Boson approach to the fully screened Kondo model

We apply the Schwinger boson scheme to the fully screened Kondo model and generalize the method to include antiferromagnetic interactions between ions. Our approach captures the Kondo crossover from local moment behavior to a Fermi liquid with a non-trivial Wilson ratio. When applied to the two impurity model, the mean-field theory describes the "Varma Jones" quantum phase transition between a valence bond state and a heavy Fermi liquid.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Single domain magnetic helicity and triangular chirality in structurally enantiopure Ba3NbFe3Si2O14

    Get PDF
A novel doubly chiral magnetic order is found out in the structurally chiral langasite compound Ba3_3NbFe3_3Si2_2O14_{14}. The magnetic moments are distributed over planar frustrated triangular lattices of triangle units. On each of these they form the same triangular configuration. This ferro-chiral arrangement is helically modulated from plane to plane. Unpolarized neutron scattering on a single crystal associated with spherical neutron polarimetry proved that a single triangular chirality together with a single helicity is stabilized in an enantiopure crystal. A mean field analysis allows discerning the relevance on this selection of a twist in the plane to plane supersuperexchange paths
