Improving institutional memory on challenges and methods for estimation of pig herd antimicrobial exposure based on data from the Danish Veterinary Medicines Statistics Program (VetStat)
With the increasing occurrence of antimicrobial resistance, more attention
has been directed towards surveillance of both human and veterinary
antimicrobial use. Since the early 2000s, several research papers on Danish pig
antimicrobial usage have been published, based on data from the Danish
Veterinary Medicines Statistics Program (VetStat). VetStat was established in
2000, as a national database containing detailed information on purchases of
veterinary medicine. This paper presents a critical set of challenges
originating from static system features, which researchers must address when
estimating antimicrobial exposure in Danish pig herds. Most challenges
presented are followed by at least one robust solution. A set of challenges
requiring awareness from the researcher, but for which no immediate solution
was available, were also presented. The selection of challenges and solutions
was based on a consensus by a cross-institutional group of researchers working
in projects using VetStat data. No quantitative data quality evaluations were
performed, as the frequency of errors and inconsistencies in a dataset will
vary, depending on the period covered in the data. Instead, this paper focuses
on clarifying how VetStat data may be translated to an estimation of the
antimicrobial exposure at herd level, by suggesting uniform methods of
extracting and editing data, in order to obtain reliable and comparable
estimates on pig antimicrobial consumption for research purposes.Comment: 25 pages, including two Appendices (pages not numbered). Title page,

Inconsistency of the judgment matrix in the AHP method and the decision maker's knowledge
In this paper we propose a method for a quantitative estimation of the
decision maker's knowledge in the context of the Analytic Hierarchy Process
(AHP) in cases, where the judgment matrix is inconsistent. We show that the
matrix of deviation from the transitivity condition corresponds to the rate
matrix for transaction costs in the financial market. For the quantitative
estimation of the decision maker's professionalism, we apply the Ising model

Interplay of Staphylococcal and Host Proteases Promotes Skin Barrier Disruption in Netherton Syndrome.
Netherton syndrome (NS) is a monogenic skin disease resulting from loss of function of lymphoepithelial Kazal-type-related protease inhibitor (LEKTI-1). In this study we examine if bacteria residing on the skin are influenced by the loss of LEKTI-1 and if interaction between this human gene and resident bacteria contributes to skin disease. Shotgun sequencing of the skin microbiome demonstrates that lesional skin of NS subjects is dominated by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis). Isolates of either species from NS subjects are able to induce skin inflammation and barrier damage on mice. These microbes promote skin inflammation in the setting of LEKTI-1 deficiency due to excess proteolytic activity promoted by S. aureus phenol-soluble modulin α as well as increased bacterial proteases staphopain A and B from S. aureus or EcpA from S. epidermidis. These findings demonstrate the critical need for maintaining homeostasis of host and microbial proteases to prevent a human skin disease
Micro-fading spectrometry: investigating the wavelength specificity of fading
A modified microfading spectrometer incorporating a linear variable filter is used to investigate the wavelength dependence of fading of traditional watercolour pigments, dosimeters and fading standards at a higher spectral resolution and/or sampling than had previously been attempted. While the wavelength dependence of photochemical damage was largely found to correlate well with the absorption spectra of each material, exceptions were found in the case of Prussian blue and Prussian green pigments (the latter includes Prussian blue), for which an anti-correlation between the spectral colour change and the absorption spectrum was found
Simulation numérique de l'hystéresis du mouillage d'une goutte sur une paroi
La forme d'une goutte sur un plan incliné ou soumise à un écoulement est étudiée à l'aide de la simulation numérique. Nous présentons pour cela un modèle numérique permettant de simuler le comportement de la ligne de contact entre une interface liquide-gaz et une paroi pane. Le modèle numérique est présenté et validé par comparaison aux résultats de la littérature. Nous montrons qu'il est ainsi possible de reproduire numériquement trois phénomènes essentiels : le mouillage statique, le mouillage dynamique et l'hystérésis de l'angle de contact
The management of healthcare-related infections through lean methodology: systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.
Introduction: Lean is largely applied to the health sector and on the healthcare-associated infections (HAI). However, a few results on the improvement of the outcome have been reported in literature. The purpose of this study is to analyze if the lean application can reduce the HAI rate.
Methods: A comprehensive search was performed on PubMed/Medline, Scopus, CINAHL, Cochrane, Embase, and Google Scholar databases using various combinations of the following keywords: "lean" and "infection". Inclusion criteria were: 1) research articles with quantitative data and relevant information on lean methodology and its impact on healthcare infections; 2) prospective studies. The risk of bias and the study quality was independently assessed by two researchers using the “The National Institutes of Health (NIH) quality assessment tool for before-after (Pre-Post) study with no control group”. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines has been used. 22 studies were included in the present meta-analysis.
Results: Lean application demonstrated a significant protective role on healthcare-associated infections rate (RR 0.50 [0.38-0.66]) with significant impact on central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) (RR 0.47 [0.28-0.82]).
Conclusions: Lean has a positive impact on the decreasing of HAIs and on the improvement of compliance and satisfaction of the staff
Increased fitness of a key appendicularian zooplankton species under warmer, acidified seawater conditions
Ocean warming and acidification (OA) may alter the fitness of species in marine pelagic ecosystems through community effects or direct physiological impacts. We used the zooplanktonic appendicularian, Oikopleura dioica, to assess temperature and pH effects at mesocosm and microcosm scales. In mesocosms, both OA and warming positively impacted O. dioica abundance over successive generations. In microcosms, the positive impact of OA, was observed to result from increased fecundity. In contrast, increased pH, observed for example during phytoplankton blooms, reduced fecundity. Oocyte fertility and juvenile development were equivalent under all pH conditions, indicating that the positive effect of lower pH on O. dioica abundance was principally due to increased egg number. This effect was influenced by food quantity and quality, supporting possible improved digestion and assimilation at lowered pH. Higher temperature resulted in more rapid growth, faster maturation and earlier reproduction. Thus, increased temperature and reduced pH had significant positive impacts on O. dioica fitness through increased fecundity and shortened generation time, suggesting that predicted future ocean conditions may favour this zooplankton species. © 2018 Bouquet et al. Unraveling the adipose tissue proteome of transition cows through severe negative energy balance
Fat mobilization in high-yielding dairy cows during early lactation occurs to overcome negative energy balance (NEB), caused by insufficient feed intake and the concomitant increased nutritional requirements. For this reason, adipose tissue represents an essential organ for healthy and performant lactation. However, only a few data are known about adipose tissue proteome and its metabolic status during peripartum. The aim of this study was to analyze the differential proteomics profiles of subcutaneous adipose tissue belonging to cows with different NEB scores (low NEB and severe NEB). Both groups were analyzed at three different time points (one month before calving, one and sixteen weeks after calving) that were related to different levels and rates of adipose tissue mobilization. The dataset highlighted the differential expression of the same four key proteins (annexin A2, actin-related protein 10, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, and fatty acid-binding protein) involved in lipid metabolism during all time points and of other 22 proteins typical of the other comparisons among remaining time points. The obtained dataset suggested that the individual variability in adipose tissue metabolism/mobilization/energy availability could be linked to the different outcomes in levels of energy balance and related physical complications among dairy cows during peripartum
