Spatial Modulation Microscopy for Real-Time Imaging of Plasmonic Nanoparticles and Cells
Spatial modulation microscopy is a technique originally developed for
quantitative spectroscopy of individual nano-objects. Here, a parallel
implementation of the spatial modulation microscopy technique is demonstrated
based on a line detector capable of demodulation at kHz frequencies. The
capabilities of the imaging system are shown using an array of plasmonic
nanoantennas and dendritic cells incubated with gold nanoparticles.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Lp Fourier multipliers on compact Lie groups
In this paper we prove Lp multiplier theorems for invariant and non-invariant
operators on compact Lie groups in the spirit of the well-known
Hormander-Mikhlin theorem on Rn and its variants on tori Tn. We also give
applications to a-priori estimates for non-hypoelliptic operators. Already in
the case of tori we get an interesting refinement of the classical multiplier

Holographic formula for the determinant of the scattering operator in thermal AdS
A 'holographic formula' expressing the functional determinant of the
scattering operator in an asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter(ALAdS) space
has been proposed in terms of a relative functional determinant of the scalar
Laplacian in the bulk. It stems from considerations in AdS/CFT correspondence
of a quantum correction to the partition function in the bulk and the
corresponding subleading correction at large N on the boundary. In this paper
we probe this prediction for a class of quotients of hyperbolic space by a
discrete subgroup of isometries. We restrict to the simplest situation of an
abelian group where the quotient geometry describes thermal AdS and also the
non-spinning BTZ instanton. The bulk computation is explicitly done using the
method of images and the answer can be encoded in a (Patterson-)Selberg

Overcoming barriers to timely recognition and treatment of cancer cachexia: Sharing Progress in Cancer Care Task Force Position Paper and Call to Action
Cachexia is a life-threatening disorder affecting an estimated 50â80% of cancer patients. The loss of skeletal muscle mass in patients with cachexia is associated with an increased risk of anticancer treatment toxicity, surgical complications and reduced response. Despite international guidelines, the identification and management of cancer cachexia remains a significant unmet need owing in part to the lack of routine screening for malnutrition and suboptimal integration of nutrition and metabolic care into clinical oncology practice. In June 2020, Sharing Progress in Cancer Care (SPCC) convened a multidisciplinary task force of medical experts and patient advocates to examine the barriers preventing the timely recognition of cancer cachexia, and provide practical recommendations to improve clinical care. Global citizenship as the completion of cosmopolitanism
A conception of global citizenship should not be viewed as separate from, or synonymous with, the cosmopolitan moral orientation, but as a primary component of it. Global citizenship is fundamentally concerned with individual
moral requirements in the global frame. Such requirements, framed here as belonging to the category of individual cosmopolitanism, offer guidelines on right action in the context of global human community. They are complementary
to the principles of moral cosmopolitanism â those to be used in assessing the justice of global institutions and practices â that have been emphasised by cosmopolitan political theorists. Considering principles of individual and moral cosmopolitanism together can help to provide greater clarity concerning individual duties in the absence of fully global institutions, as well as clarity on individual obligations of justice in relation to emerging and still-developing trans-state institutions
Refractive-index sensing with ultra-thin plasmonic nanotubes
We study the refractive-index sensing properties of plasmonic nanotubes with
a dielectric core and ultra-thin metal shell. The few-nm thin metal shell is
described by both the usual Drude model and the nonlocal hydrodynamic model to
investigate the effects of nonlocality. We derive an analytical expression for
the extinction cross section and show how sensing of the refractive index of
the surrounding medium and the figure-of-merit are affected by the shape and
size of the nanotubes. Comparison with other localized surface plasmon
resonance sensors reveals that the nanotube exhibits superior sensitivity and
comparable figure-of-merit
Microsatellite alterations and TP53 mutations in plasma DNA of small-cell lung cancer patients: Follow-up study and prognostic significance
Background: Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC), one of the major types of lung cancer, is associated with many different somatic molecular genetic changes. These alterations, observed in tumor DNA, have also been identified in the plasma DNA of patients. We undertook the present study to make a prospective investigation into the correlation between abnormal plasma DNA and patient survival. Patients and methods: Thirty-five patients with SCLC were selected after histological diagnosis. Polymorphic markers (ACTBP2, UT762 and AR) were chosen for their reported high rate of alterations in SCLC and analyzed in tumor tissue, normal blood cells and plasma DNA. Furthermore, we looked for mutations of the TP53 gene in tumor and plasma DNA. Results: In 25 patients (71%) at least one molecular change precisely matching that of the primary tumor was detected in the plasma DNA. No difference in survival was observed between patients with aberrant plasma DNA and patients without plasma DNA alterations. However, patients with microsatellite modifications and TP53 mutations concomitantly, showed a significant difference (P = 0.02) in survival compared with patients bearing only one of these molecular changes. In 15 cases it was possible to find a correlation either between tumor response and disappearance of abnormal plasma DNA, or tumor progression and persistence of plasma DNA alterations.
