Willets Point Land Use Study

The purpose of the study is to survey and map land use patterns and businesses in the Willets Point area of Queens, New York. Willets Point has been the subject of numerous recent proposals for redevelopment. The City's Economic Development Corporation released Requests for Expressions of Interest in November 2004 and recently qualified a small group of developers to present proposals for redevelopment of the area. The information and maps provided by this study will hopefully serve as background for discussions about the area. It was not within the scope of this study to evaluate existing proposals or develop alternative proposals. However, we have offered some preliminary assessments of current conditions and ideas that could serve as a foundation for more in-depth study of future opportunities

The Symbolic and Moral Interpretation of the Hippocratic Oath

O juramento de Hipócrates permaneceum dos textos éticos mais famosos em Ética Médica e Bioética. O objetivo deste ensaio é esclarecer suas interpretações poéticas e simbólicas, buscando o uso adequado do Juramento por meio de uma abordagem narrativa crítica com a Teoria Aristotélica dos Quatro Discursos e a interpretação de suas prescrições morais diretas, indiretas, específicas e gerais. O Juramento é um texto poéticoque pode ser usado para causar uma forte impressão no novo médico e auxiliar em sua educação moral e ems eu compromisso com a comunidade moral da Medicina. Essa análise torna evidente que o Juramento de Hipócrates ainda pode ser utilizado para a educação médica e a inspiração profissional, ao invés de ser apenas descartado como uma curiosidade histórica. Conclui-se que o Juramento pode ser abordado de forma mais adequada com ferramentas literárias e filosóficas específicas capazes de decodificar seus significados para a melhor compreensão pelo médico contemporâneo.The Hippocratic Oath remains as one of the most famousethical texts in Medical Ethics and Bioethics. The objective of this essay is to clarify its poetic and symbolic interpretations, searching for the adequate comprehension of the Oath using a critical narrative approach with the Aristotelian Theory of the Four Discourses and the interpretation of its direct, indirect, specific and general moral prescriptions. The Oath is a poetic text, which can be used to cause a powerful impression upon the new physician, helping in his moral education and in his commitment with the moral community of Medicine. This analysis makes evident that the Hippocratic Oath still can be used for medical education and professional inspiration, rather than just be discarded as a historical curiosity. The conclusion is that the Oath can be approached more properly with specific literary and philosophical tools that can decode its meanings to better comprehension for the contemporary physician

Partnerships with Purpose: The FEA and ASCA Joint Communication and Collaboration Guide

The Fraternity Executives Association and its members seek to form an open and collaborative partnership with host institutions and student conduct staff members to fairly and appropriately adjudicate organizational conduct issues. In support of this effort, the Association for Student Conduct Administration and the Fraternity Executives Association have partnered together to produce a guidance document that is intended to provide suggested protocol for both inter/national and campus conduct staff when working together to address an allegation of chapter misconduct. The presenters will review the components and suggested implementation of this guidance

Crossing histories

This paper examines how some pioneering planners in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, Victor Freire, Prestes Maia, Ulhoa Cintra, and Anhaia Mello disseminated and appropriated the dominant principles of international urbanism in the period 1910-1930. The education in city planning is directly associated with the repertoire of engineering courses and professional associations. In this environment, where public debates on urban issues were intense, it is worth noting the presence of English urbanist Barry Parker, who lived for two years in São Paulo, implementing innovative projects and debating with local planners. The access to urban planning manuals and reviews, and the presence of these Brazilian professionals in international seminars, led to the dissemination of the international ideals and some resulting essays on they way these ideals could be applied in many fields: urban regulations, projects in downtown areas, housing, sanitation, town extension plans, city management, zoning, among others. Contradictions among practices, actors and references are requesting a conceptual and methodological effort attentive to historical dimension of the “circulation” of ideals or their limits of intelligibility and reception in other scales of time and place, such as the one proposed in this paper

Le lotte per la terra e le promesse del Fondo comunitario terriero

Community land trusts (CLTs) are growing in the United States. They are non-profit community-based organizations that own land and lease it for permanently affordable housing. CLTs have diverse historical roots including the peace and civil rights movements and community struggles against displacement by urban redevelopment. Although land trusts have been used by elites, CLTs are potentially an alternative to the displacement and inequalities of private housing and land markets. The CLT is one among many tools for achieving the right to housing and the right to the city. However, much more is needed to secure community control of land, keep land out of the market, and make housing permanently affordable. To sustain the transformational potential of CLTs, their ties to the social movements that gave rise to them need to be strong.Negli Stati Uniti, i Community land trusts (CLT), o Fondi terrieri comunitari, sono una realtà in crescita. Si tratta di organizzazioni comunitarie, senza scopo di lucro, che possiedono terreni e che li destinano alla realizzazione di alloggi a buon mercato. I CLT hanno diverse radici storiche, inclusi i movimenti per la pace e per i diritti civili e le lotte comunitarie contro gli sgomberi legati a interventi di recupero urbano. Benché i fondi terrieri siano stati utilizzati da élites, i CLT rap-presentano una potenziale alternativa agli sgomberi e alle ingiustizie del mercato immobiliare e fondiario privato. Il CLT è uno fra i molti strumenti utili all’ottenimento del diritto alla casa e alla città. D’altra parte, è richiesto molto di più per assicurare alle comunità il controllo della terra, tenerla fuori dal mercato e mantenere gli alloggi ad un costo accessibile. The first report of a successful endovascular repair of a popliteal artery aneurysm was described in 1994. Since then, few series with not many cases have been published. Next, the authors describe two cases of successful endovascular repair of bilateral popliteal artery aneurysm.O primeiro relato de correção endovascular do aneurisma de artéria poplítea bem-sucedida foi descrito em 1994.
