High-resolution Near-Infrared Images and Models of the Circumstellar Disk in HH 30
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-object
Spectrometer (NICMOS) observations of the reflection nebulosity associated with
the T Tauri star HH 30. The images show the scattered light pattern
characteristic of a highly inclined, optically thick disk with a prominent
dustlane whose width decreases with increasing wavelength. The reflected
nebulosity exhibits a lateral asymmetry in the upper lobe on the opposite side
to that reported in previously published Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2)
images. The radiation transfer model which most closely reproduces the data has
a flared accretion disk with dust grains larger than standard interstellar
medium grains by a factor of approximately 2.1. A single hotspot on the stellar
surface provides the necessary asymmetry to fit the images and is consistent
with previous modeling of the light curve and images. Photometric analysis
results in an estimated extinction of Av>~80; however, since the photometry
measures only scattered light rather than direct stellar flux, this a lower
limit. The radiative transfer models require an extinction of Av = 7,900.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap.
Role of STAT3 in In Vitro Transformation Triggered by TRK Oncogenes
TRK oncoproteins are chimeric versions of the NTRK1/NGF receptor and display constitutive tyrosine kinase activity leading to transformation of NIH3T3 cells and neuronal differentiation of PC12 cells. Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (STAT) 3 is activated in response to cytokines and growth factors and it has been recently identified as a novel signal transducer for TrkA, mediating the functions of NGF in nervous system. In this paper we have investigated STAT3 involvement in signalling induced by TRK oncogenes. We showed that TRK oncogenes trigger STAT3 phosphorylation both on Y705 and S727 residues and STAT3 transcriptional activity. MAPK pathway was involved in the induction of STAT3 phosphorylation. Interestingly, we have shown reduced STAT3 protein level in NIH3T3 transformed foci expressing TRK oncogenes. Overall, we have unveiled a dual role for STAT3 in TRK oncogenes-induced NIH3T3 transformation: i) decreased STAT3 protein levels, driven by TRK oncoproteins activity, are associated to morphological transformation; ii) residual STAT3 transcriptional activity is required for cell growth
Initial State Dependence of the Breakup of Weakly Bound Carbon Isotopes
The one-neutron nuclear breakup from the Carbon isotopes C and
C, is calculated as an example of application of the theory of transfer
to the continuum reactions in the formulation which includes spin coupling.
The effect of the energy sharing between the parallel and transverse neutron
momentum distributions is taken into account thus resulting in a theory which
is more general than sudden eikonal approaches. Both effects are necessary to
understand properly the breakup from not too weakly bound orbitals.
Breakup which leaves the core into an excited state below particle threshold is
also considered. The core-target interaction is treated in the smooth cut-off
approximation. By comparing to presently available experimental data we show
how to make some hypothesis on the quantum numbers and occupancy of the neutron
initial state. Possible ambiguities in the interpretation of inclusive cross

First fabrication of full 3D-detectors at SINTEF
International audienceA knowledge of the mechanical properties of bacterial biofilms is required to more fully understand the processes of biofilm formation such as initial adhesion or detachment. The main contribution of this article is to demonstrate the use of homogenization techniques to compute mechanical parameters of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 biofilms. For this purpose, homogenization techniques are used to analyze freeze substitution electron micrographs of the biofilm cross-sections. The concept of a representative volume element and the study about his representativeness allows us to determine the optimal size in order to analyze these biofilm images. Results demonstrate significant heterogeneities with respect to stiffness and these can be explained by varying cell density distribution throughout the bacterial biofilms. These stiffness variations lead to different mechanical properties along the height of the biofilm. Moreover, a numerical shear stress test shows the impact of these heterogeneities on the detachment process. Several modes of detachment are highlighted according to the local strain energy in the different parts of the biofilm. Knowing where, and how, a biofilm may detach will allow better prediction of accumulation and biomass detachment
Coulomb breakup effects on the optical potentials of weakly bound nuclei
The optical potential of halo and weakly bound nuclei has a long range part
due to the coupling to breakup that damps the elastic scattering angular
distributions. In order to describe correctly the breakup channel in the case
of scattering on a heavy target, core recoil effects have to be taken into
account. We show here that core recoil and nuclear breakup of the valence
nucleon can be consistently taken into account. A microscopic absorptive
potential is obtained within a semiclassical approach and its characteristics
can be understood in terms of the properties of the halo wave function and of
the reaction mechanism. Results for the case of medium to high energy reactions

Searching for non-Gaussianity in the VSA data
We have tested Very Small Array (VSA) observations of three regions of sky
for the presence of non-Gaussianity, using high-order cumulants, Minkowski
functionals, a wavelet-based test and a Bayesian joint power
spectrum/non-Gaussianity analysis. We find the data from two regions to be
consistent with Gaussianity. In the third region, we obtain a 96.7% detection
of non-Gaussianity using the wavelet test. We perform simulations to
characterise the tests, and conclude that this is consistent with expected
residual point source contamination. There is therefore no evidence that this
detection is of cosmological origin. Our simulations show that the tests would
be sensitive to any residual point sources above the data's source subtraction
level of 20 mJy. The tests are also sensitive to cosmic string networks at an
rms fluctuation level of (i.e. equivalent to the best-fit observed
value). They are not sensitive to string-induced fluctuations if an equal rms
of Gaussian CDM fluctuations is added, thereby reducing the fluctuations due to
the strings network to rms . We especially highlight the usefulness
of non-Gaussianity testing in eliminating systematic effects from our data.Comment: Minor corrections; accepted for publication to MNRA
Perspectives on conservation impacts of the global primate trade

Most of the primate trade involves trade for pet-keeping, consumption, or biomedical experimentation. We present an overview of international primate trade through five case studies; each describes a different facet of this trade. We draw on published scientific literature, media outlets, and open access datasets, including the CITES Trade Database to build these case studies. Case study 1 describes the role of introduced island populations of Macaca and Chlorocebus in trade for biomedical experimentation; case study 2 covers the global health threats posed by the primate trade, including zoonotic disease transmission once animals enter the trade pipeline; case study 3 addresses the ways that changing patterns of primate trade, from local markets to online, have increased the demand for primates as pets; case study 4 recognizes the role that local environmental activism can play in mitigating trade; and case study 5 shows variation between global regions in their contribution to the primate trade. We recommend greater oversight of primate trade, especially domestic trade within primate range countries, and real-time reporting to CITES to accurately track primate trade. Effective conservation-focused regulations that can minimise the negative effects of primate trade must be tailored to specific regions and species and require transparency, careful regulation, field research, and an understanding of the magnitude of this trade.Peer reviewe
