    The NASA Lewis Research Center Internal Fluid Mechanics Facility

    An experimental facility specifically designed to investigate internal fluid duct flows is described. It is built in a modular fashion so that a variety of internal flow test hardware can be installed in the facility with minimal facility reconfiguration. The facility and test hardware interfaces are discussed along with design constraints of future test hardware. The plenum flow conditioning approach is also detailed. Available instrumentation and data acquisition capabilities are discussed. The incoming flow quality was documented over the current facility operating range. The incoming flow produces well behaved turbulent boundary layers with a uniform core. For the calibration duct used, the boundary layers approached 10 percent of the duct radius. Freestream turbulence levels at the various operating conditions varied from 0.64 to 0.69 percent of the average freestream velocity

    Restorative Justice-Informed Moral Acquaintance: Resolving the Dual Role Problem in Correctional and Forensic Practice

    The issue of dual roles within forensic and correctional fields has typically been conceptualized as dissonance—experienced by practitioners— when attempting to adhere to the conflicting ethical requirements associated with client well-being and community protection. In this paper, we argue that the dual role problem should be conceptualized more broadly; to incorporate the relationship between the offender and their victim. We also propose that Restorative Justice (RJ) is able to provide a preliminary ethical framework to deal with this common ethical oversight. Furthermore, we unite the RJ framework with that of Ward’s (2013) moral acquaintance model to provide a more powerful approach—RJ informed moral acquaintance—aimed at addressing the ethical challenges faced by practitioners within forensic and correctional roles

    Particles in RSOS paths

    We introduce a new representation of the paths of the Forrester-Baxter RSOS models which represents the states of the irreducible modules of the minimal models M(p',p). This representation is obtained by transforming the RSOS paths, for the cases p> 2p'-2, to new paths for which horizontal edges are allowed at certain heights. These new paths are much simpler in that their weight is nothing but the sum of the position of the peaks. This description paves the way for the interpretation of the RSOS paths in terms of fermi-type charged particles out of which the fermionic characters could be obtained constructively. The derivation of the fermionic character for p'=2 and p=kp'+/- 1 is outlined. Finally, the particles of the RSOS paths are put in relation with the kinks and the breathers of the restricted sine-Gordon model.Comment: 15 pages, few typos corrected, version publishe

    A generalization of the q-(Pfaff)-Saalschutz summation formula is proved. This implies a generalization of the Burge transform, resulting in an additional dimension of the ``Burge tree''. Limiting cases of our summation formula imply the (higher-level) Bailey lemma, provide a new decomposition of the q-multinomial coefficients, and can be used to prove the Lepowsky and Primc formula for the A_1^{(1)} string functions.Comment: 18 pages, AMSLaTe

    Special functions associated to a certain fourth order differential equation

    We develop a theory of "special functions" associated to a certain fourth order differential operator Dμ,ν\mathcal{D}_{\mu,\nu} on R\mathbb{R} depending on two parameters μ,ν\mu,\nu. For integers μ,ν1\mu,\nu\geq-1 with μ+ν2N0\mu+\nu\in2\mathbb{N}_0 this operator extends to a self-adjoint operator on L2(R+,xμ+ν+1dx)L^2(\mathbb{R}_+,x^{\mu+\nu+1}dx) with discrete spectrum. We find a closed formula for the generating functions of the eigenfunctions, from which we derive basic properties of the eigenfunctions such as orthogonality, completeness, L2L^2-norms, integral representations and various recurrence relations. This fourth order differential operator Dμ,ν\mathcal{D}_{\mu,\nu} arises as the radial part of the Casimir action in the Schr\"odinger model of the minimal representation of the group O(p,q)O(p,q), and our "special functions" give KK-finite vectors

    Excitation spectrum in a cylindrical Bose-Einstein gas

    Whole excitation spectrum is calculated within the Popov approximation of the Bogoliubov theory for a cylindrical symmetric Bose-Einstein gas trapped radially by a harmonic potential. The full dispersion relation and its temperature dependence of the zero sound mode propagating along the axial direction are evaluated in a self-consistent manner. The sound velocity is shown to depend not only on the peak density, but also on the axial area density.     Photon Orbital Angular Momentum and Mass in a Plasma Vortex

    We analyse the Anderson-Higgs mechanism of photon mass acquisition in a plasma and study the contribution to the mass from the orbital angular momentum acquired by a beam of photons when it crosses a spatially structured charge distribution. To this end we apply Proca-Maxwell equations in a static plasma with a particular spatial distribution of free charges, notably a plasma vortex, that is able to impose orbital angular momentum (OAM) onto light. In addition to the mass acquisition of the conventional Anderson-Higgs mechanism, we find that the photon acquires an additional mass from the OAM and that this mass reduces the Proca photon mass.Comment: Four pages, no figures.
