Mate Marote: a BigData platform for massive scale educational interventions

    Get PDF
In this paper we present Mate Marote, a web platform for massive scale educational interventions. We focus on the scaling requirements needed on these kind of deployments. We show the designed architecture, how these decisions solve the imposed requirements and the implementation. To test this development, we performed a small pilot intervention where the whole system was evaluated. We conclude that Mate Marote is ready for production deployment and enabled to middleto- massive scale interventions. For this purpose, we have deployed this platform in CEIBAL program at Uruguay with more than 100K potential users.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativ

Epiphytic diatom community structure and richness is determined by macroalgal host and location in the South Shetland Islands (Antarctica)

The marine waters around the South Shetland Islands are paramount in the primary production of this Antarctic ecosystem. With the increasing effects of climate change and the annual retreat of the ice shelf, the importance of macroalgae and their diatom epiphytes in primary production also increases. The relationships and interactions between these organisms have scarcely been studied in Antarctica, and even less in the volcanic ecosystem of Deception Island, which can be seen as a natural proxy of climate change in Antarctica because of its vulcanism, and the open marine system of Livingston Island. In this study we investigated the composition of the diatom communities in the context of their macroalgal hosts and different environmental factors. We used a non-acidic method for diatom digestion, followed by slidescanning and diatom identification by manual annotation through a web-browser-based image annotation platform. Epiphytic diatom species richness was higher on Deception Island as a whole, whereas individual macroalgal specimens harboured richer diatom assemblages on Livingston Island. We hypothesize this a possible result of a higher diversity of ecological niches in the unique volcanic environment of Deception Island. Overall, our study revealed higher species richness and diversity than previous studies of macroalgae-inhabiting diatoms in Antarctica, which could however be the result of the different preparation methodologies used in the different studies, rather than an indication of a higher species richness on Deception Island and Livingston Island than other Antarctic localities

The effect of ketotifen on inflammatory markers in allergic conjunctivitis: an open, uncontrolled study

BACKGROUND: The efficacy and safety of ketotifen eye drop treatment in allergic conjunctivitis (AC) management is perfectly known by several studies, but the mechanism of action at the biochemical levels is poorly understood so we decided to perform an open, uncontrolled study in order to investigate the effect of the topical administration of ketotifen fumarate 0.05% on biochemical markers of inflammation on conjunctival cells in patients with AC. METHODS: Nineteen patients with symptoms and signs of AC (itching, discharge, burning, redness, increase in the watery discharge, swelling and follicles) and with a history of allergy were prescribed with two daily instillation of one drop of eyewash ketotifen fumarate 0,05% in both eyes during thirty days. They were studied by measuring clinical and immunologic parameters. RESULTS: Ketotifen fumarate treatment significantly reduced the total symptoms and signs score for each patient as well as each symptoms and signs at all time points compared with day 0 (p < 0.0001 and p < 0.016, respectively). Although the percentage of HLA-DR+ epithelial cells diminished only in 58% of patients, the numbers of CD29+ and eotaxin+ epithelial cells dropped significantly in 68% and 73 % of them (p < 0.0062 and <0.0082, respectively) as a consequence of the treatment. In 9 out of 19 patients a simultaneous decrease in the percentage of epithelial cells positive for CD29 and eotaxin was observed. CONCLUSION: Ketotifen besides the well-known effect in reducing signs and symptoms of AC significantly diminished production of eotaxin and expression of CD29 by epithelial cells in patients with seasonal AC

Administration of a peptide inhibitor of alpha4-integrin inhibits the development of experimental autoimmune uveitis

    Get PDF
Recruitment of lymphocytes into the retina and to the vitreous during the development of experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) is governed by factors such as the state of activation of inflammatory cells and the repertoire of adhesion molecules expressed by the local vascular endothelia. alpha4 Integrins and their receptors play an important role during homing of cells to the inflammatory site. In the present study, the effect of alpha4-integrin inhibitor on the development of EAU was investigated.Fil: Martín, Andrea P.. Universidade de Sao Paulo; BrasilFil: Vieira de Moraes, Luciana. The new digital era opens up great possiblilities in education. Mate Marote is a platform including activities and educational games for massive scale interventions. Recent creation of Fundación Sadosky, has favored the collaboration between industry and academia in projects involving novel methods and ideas with big scale software platforms which require experience in architecture and high-end software development. The collaboration established showed exceptional conditions for the mutual benefit: the incorporation of academic research in educational neuroscience in the industry and the transference of well-established methodology and software development experience in the academic environment.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativa (SADIO

Dynamic structure factor of the Ising model with purely relaxational dynamics

    Get PDF
We compute the dynamic structure factor for the Ising model with a purely relaxational dynamics (model A). We perform a perturbative calculation in the ϵ\epsilon expansion, at two loops in the high-temperature phase and at one loop in the temperature magnetic-field plane, and a Monte Carlo simulation in the high-temperature phase. We find that the dynamic structure factor is very well approximated by its mean-field Gaussian form up to moderately large values of the frequency ω\omega and momentum kk. In the region we can investigate, kξ≲5k\xi \lesssim 5, ωτ≲10\omega \tau \lesssim 10, where ξ\xi is the correlation length and τ\tau the zero-momentum autocorrelation time, deviations are at most of a few percent.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figure
