Tribo-electrochemical behavior of bio-functionalized TiO2 nanotubes in artificial saliva: Understanding of degradation mechanisms
It has been shown that the synthesis of TiO2 nanotubes by anodization provides outstanding properties to Ti surfaces intended for dental and orthopedic implants applications. Beyond the very well-known potential of these surfaces to improve osseointegration and avoid infection, the knowledge on the adhesion and degradation behavior of TiO2 nanotubes under the simultaneous action of wear and corrosion is still poorly understood and these are issues of tremendous importance. The main aim of this work is to investigate, for the first time, the tribo-electrochemical degradation behavior of Ti surfaces decorated with TiO2 nanotubes before and after bio-functionalization treatments.Well-aligned TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) were produced containing elements natively present in bone such as calcium (Ca) and phosphorous (P), in addition of zinc (Zn) as an antimicrobial agent and stimulator of bone formation. The synthesis of Ca/P/Zn-doped nanotubes (NT-Ca/P/Zn) was achieved by reverse polarization and anodization treatments applied to conventional TiO2 nanotubes grown by two-step anodization. The nanotube surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) while dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM-DF) was used to characterize the Ti/TiO2 nanotubular films interfaces. Tribo-electrochemical tests were conducted under reciprocating sliding conditions in artificial saliva. The open circuit potential (OCP) was monitored before, during and after sliding tests, and the coefficient of friction (COF) values were registered during rubbing action. The wear tracks resulting from sliding tests were characterized by SEM and wear volume measurements were carried out by 2D profilometry.The results show that the tribo-electrochemical behavior of TiO2 nanotubes was significantly improved after bio-functionalization treatments. Local and systemic effects of fibrin and cyanoacrylate adhesives on lung lesions in rabbits
OBJECTIVES: Tissue adhesives can be used to prevent pulmonary air leaks, which frequently occur after lung interventions. The objective of this study is to evaluate local and systemic effects of fibrin and cyanoacrylate tissue adhesives on lung lesions in rabbits. METHODS: Eighteen rabbits were submitted to videothoracoscopy + lung incision alone (control) or videothoracoscopy + lung incision + local application of fibrin or cyanoacrylate adhesive. Blood samples were collected and assessed for leukocyte, neutrophil and lymphocyte counts and interleukin-8 levels preoperatively and at 48 hours and 28 days post-operatively. After 28 days, the animals were euthanized for gross examination of the lung surface, and lung fragments were excised for histopathological analysis. RESULTS: Fibrin and cyanoacrylate produced similar adhesion scores of the lung to the parietal pleura. Microscopic analysis revealed uniform low-cellular tissue infiltration in the fibrin group and an intense tissue reaction characterized by dense inflammatory infiltration of granulocytes, giant cells and necrosis in the cyanoacrylate group. No changes were detected in the leukocyte, neutrophil or lymphocyte count at any time-point, while the interleukin-8 levels were increased in the fibrin and cyanoacrylate groups after 48 hours compared with the pre-operative control levels (

Monolithic porous carbon materials prepared from polyurethane foam templates
Monolithic carbon foams with hierarchical porosity were prepared from polyurethane templates and resol precursors. Mesoporosity was achieved through the use of soft templating with surfactant Pluronic F127, and macroporosity from the polyurethane foams was retained. Conditions to obtain high porosity materials were optimized. The best materials have high specific surface areas (380 and 582 m(2) g(-1), respectively) and high electrical conductivity, which make them good candidates for supports in sensors. These materials showed an almost linear dependence between the potential and the pH of aqueous solutions
A seven-year study about the negative cloud-to-ground lightning ash characteristics in Southeastern Brazil
Abstract A seven-year study of negative cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning ash characteristics in southeastern Brazil is presented. The study is based on approximately 10 million ashes recorded by a Lightning Position and tracking system lightning detection network from November 1988 to December 1995. The data set is the longest ever obtained in the tropics using an almost constant network conÿguration. It provides a unique opportunity to study the long-term annual, monthly, and local time distributions of the number, intensity (peak current) and multiplicity of negative CG ashes in the tropics. The annual distribution of the number of ashes has variations as large as 80%. The variations does not show any clear relationship with any meteorological parameter, possibly indicating the complex interactions of di erent processes responsible for the lightning activity. The monthly and local time distributions seem to follow closely the related distributions of air temperature. The annual distribution of peak current shows an average value of 40:4 kA and has a signiÿcant decrease from 1991 to 1994, apparently related to an El Niño seasonal e ect. The monthly distribution of peak current shows lower values in the winter, in contrast with the results recently reported for the United States, and seems to be related to the monthly distribution of the number of ashes. The local time distribution of the peak current seems also to be related to the local time distribution of the number of ashes; however, the dependency is less evident. The annual distribution of multiplicity has a systematic decrease during the period, with no apparent relationship with any of the variables studied. The monthly distribution of multiplicity is consistent with the hypothesis that the multiplicity is related to the average height of thunderstorms. The local time distribution of multiplicity, in turn, shows a sunrise/sunset e ect. The results are compared to similar ones obtained in other regions of the world
Peripheral brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) as a biomarker in bipolar disorder: a meta-analysis of 52 studies
Background: The neurotrophic hypothesis postulates that mood disorders such as bipolar disorder (BD) are associated with a lower expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). However, its role in peripheral blood as a biomarker of disease activity and of stage for BD, transcending pathophysiology, is still disputed. In the last few years an increasing number of clinical studies assessing BDNF in serum and plasma have been published. Therefore, it is now possible to analyse the association between BDNF levels and the severity of affective symptoms in BD as well as the effects of acute drug treatment of mood episodes on BDNF levels. Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of all studies on serum and plasma BDNF levels in bipolar disorder. Results: Through a series of meta-analyses including a total of 52 studies with 6,481 participants, we show that, compared to healthy controls, peripheral BDNF levels are reduced to the same extent in manic (Hedges' g = -0.57, P = 0.010) and depressive (Hedges' g = -0.93, P = 0.001) episodes, while BDNF levels are not significantly altered in euthymia. In meta-regression analyses, BDNF levels additionally negatively correlate with the severity of both manic and depressive symptoms. We found no evidence for a significant impact of illness duration on BDNF levels. In addition, in plasma, but not serum, peripheral BDNF levels increase after the successful treatment of an acute mania episode, but not of a depressive one. Conclusions: In summary, our data suggest that peripheral BDNF levels, more clearly in plasma than in serum, is a potential biomarker of disease activity in BD, but not a biomarker of stage. Analogues of Marine Guanidine Alkaloids Are in Vitro Effective against Trypanosoma cruzi and Selectively Eliminate Leishmania (L.) infantum Intracellular Amastigotes
Synthetic analogues of marine sponge guanidine alkaloids showed in vitro antiparasitic activity against Leishmania (L.) infantum and Trypanosoma cruzi. Guanidines 10 and 11 presented the highest selectivity index when tested against Leishmania. The antiparasitic activity of 10 and 11 was investigated in host cells and in parasites. Both compounds induced depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential, upregulation of reactive oxygen species levels, and increased plasma membrane permeability in Leishmania parasites. Immunomodulatory assays suggested an NO-independent effect of guanidines 10 and 11 on macrophages. The same compounds also promoted anti-inflammatory activity in L. (L.) infantum-infected macrophages cocultived with splenocytes, reducing the production of cytokines MCP-1 and IFN-γ. Guanidines 10 and 11 affect the bioenergetic metabolism of Leishmania, with selective elimination of parasites via a host-independent mechanism
Activity of the antiarrhythmic drug amiodarone against Leishmania (L.) infantum: an in vitro and in vivo approach
<div><p>Abstract Background: Considering the high toxicity and limited therapies available for treating visceral leishmaniasis (VL), the drug repositioning approach represents a faster way to deliver new therapies to the market. Methods: In this study, we described for the first time the activity of a potent antiarrhythmic, amiodarone (AMD), against L. (L.)infantum and its in vitro and in vivo activity. Results: The evaluation against promastigotes has shown that amiodarone presents leishmanicidal effect against the extracellular form, with an IC50 value of 10 μM. The activity was even greater against amastigotes in comparison with promastigotes with an IC50 value of 0.5 μM. The selectivity index in relation to the intracellular form demonstrated that the antiparasitic activity was approximately 56 times higher than its toxicity to mammalian cells. Investigation of the in vivo AMD activity in the L. infantum-infected hamster model showed that 51 days after the initial infection, amiodarone was unable to reduce the parasite burden in the spleen and liver when treated for 10 consecutive days, intraperitoneally, at 50 mg/kg/day, as determined by qPCR. Although not statistically significant, AMD was able to reduce the parasite burden by 20% in the liver when treated for 10 consecutive days, orally, at 100 mg/kg/day; no reduction in the spleen was found by qPCR. Conclusions: Our findings may help further drug design studies seeking new AMD derivatives that may provide new candidates with an in vitro selectivity close to or even greater than that observed in the prototype delivering effectiveness in the experimental model of VL.</p></div
BepiColombo’s Cruise Phase: Unique Opportunity for Synergistic Observations
The investigation of multi-spacecraft coordinated observations during the cruise phase of BepiColombo (ESA/JAXA) are reported, with a particular emphasis on the recently launched missions, Solar Orbiter (ESA/NASA) and Parker Solar Probe (NASA). Despite some payload constraints, many instruments onboard BepiColombo are operating during its cruise phase simultaneously covering a wide range of heliocentric distances (0.28 AU–0.5 AU). Hence, the various spacecraft configurations and the combined in-situ and remote sensing measurements from the different spacecraft, offer unique opportunities for BepiColombo to be part of these unprecedented multipoint synergistic observations and for potential scientific studies in the inner heliosphere, even before its orbit insertion around Mercury in December 2025. The main goal of this report is to present the coordinated observation opportunities during the cruise phase of BepiColombo (excluding the planetary flybys). We summarize the identified science topics, the operational instruments, the method we have used to identify the windows of opportunity and discuss the planning of joint observations in the future
